Cuxhaven Kugelbake

A great motive at the edge between Northern Sea and river Elbe - the old naval aid was the last thing emigrants saw who entered the emigrant ships from the port of Cuxhaven. Today its frequently visited by tourists and an inspiring place at the end of lower-saxony in Germany

Kugelbake Cuxhaven

1. The Kugelbake is a historic aid to navigation in the city of Cuxhaven, Germany.
2. It is at the northernmost point of Lower Saxony, where the River Elbe flows into the North Sea.
3. In the Low German dialect of the Middle Ages, the term bake referred to all navigational aids -- including lighthouses.
4. The first navigational aid was built on this spot around 1703 after a storm.
5. In 1853, the Kugelbake was lit nightly to guide ships in the difficult curvature of the estuary.
6. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the light was reduced to confuse potential enemies
7. In World War I it was completely removed for the same reason.
8.. In 1924 it was rebuilt, but instead of the eponymous ball, two round perpendicular composite discs were attached at the top.
9. The Kugelbake was also the spot where amateur radio pioneer Jonathan Zenneck experimented with radio communications
10. A wooden hut was built within the structure, equipped with the necessary antennas and technical equipment for the very first coastal radio station in Germany.
11. The first transmissions were sent between the Kugelbake and the steamship Silvana to a distance of 32km.
12. In the autumn of 1900, transmissions were sent as far as the Elbe Islands and Heligoland, 63km away
13. About 100 feet high and built of wood, the Kugelbake is the principal landmark of Cuxhaven; since 1913

Cuxhaven-Duhnen/Kugelbake

Cuxhaven liegt an der Mündung der Elbe in die Nordsee. Cuxhaven, Kreisstadt des gleichnamigen Landkreises in Niedersachsen, zählt mit 49.093 Einwohnern (Zensus 2011)[2] nach dem Niedersächsischen Kommunalverfassungsgesetz zu den großen selbständigen Städten,
zugleich ist sie die drittgrößte Stadt an der niedersächsischen Nordseeküste. Die Stadt gehört zu den Metropolregionen Bremen/Oldenburg und Hamburg und ist laut Landesentwicklungsplan ein Mittelzentrum.Das Wahrzeichen Cuxhavens ist die Kugelbake. Das hölzerne Seezeichen markiert an der Elbmündung den Übergang von der Unter- zur Außenelbe und damit die Grenze für die Binnenschifffahrt. Sie ist auch das Motiv des Wappens der Stadt.

Cuxhaven is a seaside town on Germany’s North Sea coast. Brightly colored shelters dot its sandy beach. The Kugelbake, a wooden navigational tower, stands at the mouth of the Elbe River. The UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Cuxhaven has a nature trail and exhibits on the area’s tidal flats and wildlife. The port is a gateway to the nearby tidal island of Neuwerk and the small Heligoland archipelago.

Until 1937, Cuxhaven was part of Hamburg; in a reorganization two towns near Hamburg that were part of Prussia were given to Hamburg in exchange for Cuxhaven. With 55000 citizens, Cuxhaven isn't a very large city. It still can boast roughly 3 million booked nights a year, making it one of the largest seaside resorts in Germany.

Tourism is one of the traditional businesses of Cuxhaven. The other two are the fish industry, and the harbour. The city is trying to expand the latter and has invested a lot of money in the modernization and expansion of the port facility. Still, the economic situation isn't all too good and tourism remains the major industry of the city. Many people have left Cuxhaven in the past decades to settle elsewhere. Many of those who remain are retired, contributing to the small, quiet town ambiance.

Near Cuxhaven, between 1945 and 1964 about 500 rockets were launched. The best known rocket launches which took place in the area of Cuxhaven, were the launches of three V2 rockets in the operation Backfire, in order to demonstrate Allied forces the technique of the wonder weapon V2 in October 1945. The only thing remembering to rocketry at Cuxhaven is a trough near the way from Arensch to Sahlenburg.

Cuxhaven is a quiet place. If you're looking for action and parties, it's probably not the right destination. If you're looking for a quiet city by the sea, Cuxhaven becomes a much more interesting choice. Most people come to Cuxhaven either via train or car. Some ferry services exist, but they are overall negligible.

Alte Liebe (Old Love) is a former quai turned viewing platform at the entrance to the Cuxhaven harbour. Good view of passing ships. Loudspeakers announce their names and origin.

Schloß Ritzebüttel Small castle-like building near the Nordersteinstraße shopping area.

The Kugelbake marks the geographic point where the Elbe river ends. Originally intended as a navigation aid, it is one of the more notable constructions in the region. It was incorporated in the Cuxhaven coat of arms when the city was incorporated and remains one of its primary landmarks.

Semaphor Located next to the Alte Liebe, the Sempahor is a construction from the year 1884 that is used to communicate wind strength and direction to passing ships. It is still set every day.

This Wadden Sea is the area of the sea where the water recedes during low tide. It's one of the main reasons why people visit Cuxhaven. You can take walks, look at crabs, build castles from the sand and the mud, and so on. Be warned that the rising water can be tricky!

Cuxhaven -Ein Spaziergang von Sahlenburg zur Kugelbake-

In diesem Video gehen wir von Sahlenburg nach Cuxhaven - Döse zur Kugelbake. Das ist eine Strecke von rund 7,7 km. Dafür benötigt man etwa 2 Stunden, hier in diesem Clip sind es 11 Minuten. Die Blickrichtung ist immer in Richtung Kugelbake, die Nordsee ist also immer links und das Festland rechts. Wir gehen dabei abwechselnd auf dem Deich, vor dem Deich auf der Strandpromendade und hinter dem Deich. Der Spaziergang wird abgeschlossen von einem Rundblick über die Grimmelshörn Bucht und der Passage von einigen Schiffen, die von unserem Balkon aus gefilmt wurden. Wer so lange durchgehalten hat, wird mit einem wunderschönen Regenbogen über Cuxhaven belohnt.

Das Video wurde an verschiedenen Tagen in der zweiten Hälfte des Mai 2013 gedreht und vermittelt den Eindruck von lang anhaltendem schönem Wetter. Tatsächlich aber war es der schlechteste Mai seit Menschengedenken. Es ist uns gelungen, die wenigen Sonnenstunden, die uns in diesem Jahr vergönnt waren, für dieses Video einzufangen.

Gefilmt wurde mit einer Canon Power Shot A3400 IS freihändig und ohne Stativ.
