Kugti Pass Trek||Bharmour||Kartik Swami||Marali Maata||Kugti Wildlife Sanctury||Kugti pass to Lahul
One of the most beautiful yet unexplored treks, the Kugti Pass trek in Himachal Pradesh takes you to a daunting altitude of 16,600 ft. Frequently used by the Gaddi tribes to cross over to Lahaul and Spiti valleys to graze their flocks, Kugti Pass proves to be a perfect gateway. A strenuous climb with difficult terrains and slippery paths, makes this trek one of the most challenging treks in the Central Himalayan ranges. An experience in high altitude trekking is a must before venturing on this intimidating trek.
Swami Kartikeya Temple (Kaylong Temple) is located near Kugti village in Bharmour area of Himachal Pradesh specifically near Uparli Kugti. The temple is located at a distance of 4km from Kugti at an altitude of 3100m above sea level. A mild 4km trek from Kugtii village takes you to the stunning beauty of Swami Kartikeya Temple. As swami Kartikeya is known as Keylong (also spelled as Kelang) in Bharmour hence this temple is more famous by the name of Keylong temple in Bharmour. Although there are many temples of Swami Kartikeya in Bharmour but this temple is considered as most significant among all the temples of Swami Kartikeya in Bharmour. Worshippers of Lord Kartikeya visit this temple every year to get his blessings.
Swami Kartikeya Temple is dedicated to the elder son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, who offered his bones as testimony of his devotion to his father. Lord Kartikeya Swami is also known as Kartik Murugan Swami in the southern part of India.
Marali Mata Temple
There is also temple of Marali Mata near Lord Kartikeya Temple. Marali Mata is sister of Swami Kartikeya and daughter of Lord Shiva. You can see beautiful snow covered mountains from Marali mata temple. There is another seat of Marali Mata on the top of the mountain peak visible from this marali mata temple.
The Mythology
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva (the destroyer) told his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya that one of them, who will be the first to take seven rounds of the universe will have the privilege of being worshiped first.
Ganesha took seven rounds around Shiva and Parvati, while Kartikeya faithfully circled the universe. Impressed by Ganesha, Shiva gave him the honour of being worshipped before anyone. Angered by this, Kartikeya sacrificed his body and gave his bones to Lord Shiva as reverence.
My Personal Experience
Experience was awesome. Planned before 5 months so was really excited to go there on Baisakhi. Last time some guys refused to go so decided to go so. But luckily some excited friends cathed up in last minute. So every second of journey was exciting, new experience adding moments, beautiful valley, refresh air and clean streams and unique, old culture made it more sublime. Journey was full of excitement and those 3 days will remain in my head throughout my life.

Himalayan Brown Bear in Kugti Wild Life Sanctuary by Narender Singh and Dr. Bipan Rathore
The food habits of the Himalayan Brown Bear Ursus arctos (Mammalia: Carnivora: Ursidae) in Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh, India
Bipan C. Rathore, N.P.S. Chauhan
Abstract
We documented the food habits of the Himalayan Brown Bear Ursus arctos in Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh, India, between 2002 and 2004 using scat analysis (n=222), direct observation (n=57), and feeding sign observations (n=57). We concluded that Himalayan Brown Bears lead a predominantly herbivorous life style as plant matter occurred more frequently in scats (79%) than animal matter (21%). During summer, monsoon and fall, the frequency occurrence of plant matter was 72.2%, 77% and 91% respectively. During early summer, brown bears foraged primarily on green vegetation such as Rumex nepalensis followed by Chaerophyllum reflexum. Based on direct feeding observations, brown bears were observed to be feeding on 29 species of plants including agricultural crops and one fungi, Morchella esculenta. The overuse by livestock, decline in local herbs and excessive extraction of high altitudinal medicinal plants in this habitat may pose a threat to the fragmented brown bear population.
