Trip to Kumamoto in Japan
Kumamoto City, situated roughly in the center of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the government and economic center of the prefecture. It has a population of over 730,000 and holds the largest-scale shopping arcade in western Japan. With a length of over 1 kilometer, the arcade is located at the foot of Kumamoto Castle in the city center. In the shopping arcade, there is a wide variety of shops, such as department stores, electronic shops, drugstores, and boutiques. There are also a variety of restaurants and bars where tourists can enjoy local delicacies.
The area is also rich in history, with sites such as Kumamoto Castle, built over 400 years ago and considered one of the three most magnificent castles in Japan. On top of everything else, Kumamoto is blessed with abundant hot springs.
As you can see, Kumamoto is filled with invaluable historical heritage, unique culture, magnificent nature, and refreshing hot springs, as well as outstanding food.
The city is only a 40min Shinkansen Bullet Train ride away from Fukuoka and you can spend there the whole day experiencing various things.

Kumamoto Castle ???? 熊本城 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Kumamoto Castle is widely regarded as one of Japan's Top 3 castles. It also played a major role in Japan's 19th century history.
NB: Due to severe earthquake damage, the castle is currently closed. The time of its full reopening has not yet been announced. The main castle keep is scheduled to be reopened in spring, 2021.
The castle has a history going back all the way to 1467, and was greatly expanded over the years. It reached its full completion in the early 1600s. Perhaps the most notable role of the castle was the role it played in 1877 during the Satsuma Rebellion, which was the last gasp of feudal deadenders trying to end the western style modernization of Japan (and abolishing the samurai). The castle was occupied by Japanese Imperial troops, and over 20,000 Satsuma rebels first tried to storm the castle, and then lay siege to it.
Much of the castle was destroyed in the battle as well as an earthquake in 1889. Restoration works repaired all the damage.
In April, 2016 there was another large earthquake that caused significant damage to the castle, and the main tower repairs will not be finished until around 2019. Completely restoring all the damage may take until 2036.

Kumamoto, Japan - Kumamoto Castle (2019)
Kumamoto Castle (熊本城 Kumamoto-jō) is a hilltop Japanese castle located in Chūō-ku, Kumamoto, in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was a large and well fortified castle. The castle keep (天守閣 tenshukaku) is a concrete reconstruction built in 1960, but several ancillary wooden buildings remain of the original castle. Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle. Thirteen structures in the castle complex are designated Important Cultural Property.
Kumamoto (熊本市 Kumamoto-shi) is the capital city of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan.
As of April 1, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 737,812[3] and a population density of 1,900 persons per km2. The total area is 389.53 km2.
Greater Kumamoto (熊本都市圏) had a population of 1,461,000, as of the 2000 census. As of 2010, Kumamoto Metropolitan Employment Area has a GDP of US$39.8 billion. It is not considered part of the Fukuoka–Kitakyushu metropolitan area, despite their shared border. The city was designated on April 1, 2012 by government ordinance.

Kumamoto Castle 熊本城 (TOURIST SPOT)
KUMAMOTO – “Warning: No trespassing due to earthquake damage,” bears a sign at Kumamoto Castle, a popular tourist destination in the prefecture, while castle officials make rounds to prevent trespassers.
Strong earthquakes that hit the region last April not only destroyed homes, schools and offices but also cultural properties such as Kumamoto Castle, which was built in 1607 and attracts about 1.7 million tourists a year.
It was the first time the castle had been seriously damaged since it was burned down during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877.
Visitors at present can only view the castle in limited locations, including Kato Shrine, where they can get closest to the collapsed tenshukaku (castle keep).
“Usually around this season, many tourist buses would arrive, bringing visitors speaking in many different languages, including Chinese, English and Korean. But there are less this year,” said Hideo Kawata, head of Kumamoto Castle’s administration department.
It will take decades to finish restoring the castle, Kawata said.
The worst damage is to the stone wall surrounding the castle, which is expected to take about 20 years to repair.
About 30 percent of the 79,000 sq.-meter wall is damaged, and a further 10 percent has completely collapsed.
To repair the wall, numbers will be allocated to each and every stone that is removed so they can be replaced in the same spot like a jigsaw puzzle.
The castle is also home to 13 important cultural properties designated by the central government, including the castle’s 11 scaffolds and a gate.
Of those, two scaffolds completely collapsed and the roof and walls of a scaffold gate have also been damaged.
But for tourists and history buffs, the damage to the keep may be the most shocking.
Although it’s not designated as an important cultural property, the keep, rebuilt in 1960 in concrete, is regarded by many as a symbol of the castle.

For the long weekend, I decided to spend a day in Kumamoto city, I stayed with my former neighbor Gatchan, who some people may recall from my super early vlogs (I think I took most of them down now..)
I lived in Kumamoto from 2006-2007, and during that time, Kumamoto Castle was under construction, so although I visited it with Cam (in another video you may or may not recall) I wasn't able to fully have the KUMAMOTO CASTLE EXPERIENCE until we made the trip this weekend..

Today, we head out to Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu with Bobby. A quick visit to the famous Kumamoto castle, built by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa, they encounter a party of very realistically dressed samurai warriors. Following which, the team journeys to the largest shopping street in the city and enjoy a hot bowl of Kumamoto Ramen, some refreshing tea at the Suizen Temple Park, and the famous horse sashimi.

Japan’s Kumamoto Castle, Aso Shrine destroyed by quake
So far, 41 people have been killed after two devastating earthquakes rocked southern Japan on Thursday and Saturday. The quakes have taken their toll on some of Japan's historical landmarks. The 17th-Century Kumamoto Castle has been left badly damaged, while the towering wooden entrance gate and hall of the Aso Shrine in Kyushu has completely collapsed.

KUMAMOTO CASTLE CONSTRUCTION KIT
On April 14, 2016, a massive earthquake occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture and Oita Prefecture. The damage was immense, and the reconstruction of the area is still continuing. Many historical buildings were destroyed or strongly damaged, among it Kumamoto Castle. It is said that it takes about 20 years to recover and the costs are estimated to be more than 60 billion Yen. In this video, we would like to introduce you the efforts of the Kumamoto Castle Assembly Donation project. A cardboard production company started a fund-raising campaign to help rebuild the destroyed and damaged parts of Kumamoto Castle. Also, the thoughts and memories while building the model will help as much as the raised money.
