Kumamoto Castle 熊本城 ~ Abroad in Japan Vlog
Kumamoto Castle!!!
I had been dying to visit, so my homeroom sensei so kindly brought me. It really is amazing, my camera just cannot capture the amazingness.
Kumamoto Castle is one of the three most famous castles in Japan, along with Osaka and Himeji Castle.
-----
If you have a significant other, bring them to one of these castles during sakura season. It'll be beautiful. I will most definitely visit once more in April once the cherry blossoms have bloomed.

Shimabara Castle, Japan, 2019
Shimabara Castle (島原城 Shimabara-jō), also known as Moritake Castle (森岳城 Moritake-jō) and Takaki Castle (高来城 Takaki-jō), is a Japanese castle located in Shimabara ... Shimabara Castle is a flatland castle (平城 Hirajiro), located between Ariake Bay and Mount Unzen. The outer moats, some 15 meters deep and between 30–50 meters wide, extended 360 meters east-west and 1260 meters north-south, with the enclosed area divided into three baileys. The walls extended for 3900 meters and had 16 yagura of various sizes at key points. The main donjon had five stories, and a height of 33 meters, and was connected to two secondary keeps, each with three stories. In terms of scale, it was far larger than normal for a daimyō with revenues of only 40,000 koku. Wkipedia

The first headline was 2 days ago predicting a massive earthquake the rest are from a few hours ago , none of the headlines state if the earthquake is USGS seismic scale or Japanese seismic scale should seriously concern you . The fact they use the word massive for a 6.3 would imply its on the Japanese scale and therefore much more powerful .

Nuclear Plant sits ON TOP OF ACTIVE FAULT LINE: Tsurugu in Japan

ALSO IN THE NEWS:
TEPCO REPORTS ANOTHER LEAK AT FUKUSHIMA
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reported another leak of radioactive water, this time from a steel storage tank above ground.
Tokyo Electric Power Company officials say a worker found the leak shortly after noon on Wednesday.
The tank is one of those built at the plant since May to store contaminated water transferred from storage pools underground.
The utility built the tanks after finding a series of leaks in April in the underground pools.
TEPCO officials say the contaminated water was seeping from a joint in the tank, at a rate of one drop every 3 to 4 seconds.
They report that bolts at the joint were tightened. They stopped water transfer and are investigating the cause.
The officials say no changes were detected in radioactivity levels at monitoring points near the plant.
The tank is about 400 meters from the sea. TEPCO officials say there is no risk of contaminated water reaching the sea.

NUCLEAR EVACUATION GUIDELINES UPDATED
Japan's nuclear regulator has decided further details of its guidelines for local residents in case of a nuclear plant accident.
In February the Nuclear Regulation Authority decided on a revised version of the guidelines. The review came after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident in March, 2011.
The new guidelines expanded the necessary evacuation area, or the area where residents must stay indoors, to a 30-kilometer radius around a nuclear plant.
It also says iodine tablets should be distributed to households within 5 kilometers of a plant in advance of a possible accident.
Iodine helps prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive substances.
On Wednesday an NRA meeting decided that municipalities within 5 kilometers of a plant will have doctors inform residents about the use and storage of iodine tablets before distributing them.
It also decided that the municipalities will identify residents who may suffer from the side effects from the tablets before distribution.
Municipalities outside the 5-kilometer radius will be ordered to store necessary amounts of the tablets for emergency.
However, municipalities can distribute the tablets to residents outside the 5-kilometer radius if quick distribution would be difficult due to geography.
Concerning monitoring radiation levels, the regulator decided that the central government, instead of relevant municipalities, will be in charge. The government will set up a monitoring center near each plant and instruct municipalities and the plant operator to gather data to be used for the government to analyze.
Municipalities within 30 kilometers of a plant must now incorporate the latest decision into their disaster preparedness programs.

Surface Expression of the Meers Fault Scarp - Dr. Charles Gilbert, Day 2, Video 10
Surface Expression of the Meers Fault Scarp - Dr. Charles Gilbert, Day 2, Video 10
-------------------------------------------------------------
The fault scarp along the Meers Fault Zone is not very pronounced in the field because the fault is running through the poorly consolidated Permian Hennessey Shale. You can tell from the questions and head-turning that the participants are having a difficult time seeing the trace of the fault scarp. Charles Gilbert emphasizes that the trace can be observed quite easily with topographic maps and satellite images. The maximum offset associated with the most recent fault movement is about 3 to 5 meters vertically and 3 to 5 meters laterally (to the left)...an oblique slip. The north side of the fault has moved up. This movement is the reverse sense of motion relative to the movement in the Pennsylvanian Period.
-------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to Charles Gilbert's comments, questions and comments come from Neil Suneson, Bob Puckett, William Thomas of the Alabama Geological Survey, and Richard Hanson. The line of vehicles on the far side of the road is the field trip caravan. The excessive background noise in this video is caused by traffic leaving the parking lot of a Sunday morning cowboy church service....(sorry about that!).

JAPAN More Aftershocks
A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.
Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake.
The quake has sparked fires in several areas including Tokyo, and numerous casualties are feared.
It struck about 250 miles (400km) from the capital at a depth of 20 miles. There have been powerful aftershocks.
The tremor hit at 1446 local time (0546 GMT). Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years.
The tsunami warning was extended to the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Pacific coast of Russia and Hawaii.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the wave could extend as far as Chile.
Tsunami waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, officials said.
Japan's NHK television showed a massive surge of debris-filled water sweeping away buildings, cars and ships and reaching far inland.
The earthquake also triggered a number of fires, including one at an oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, engulfing storage tanks.
There were reports of about 20 people injured in Tokyo after the roof of a hall collapsed on to a graduation ceremony.
Residents and workers in Tokyo rushed out of apartment buildings and office blocks and gathered in parks and open spaces as aftershocks continued to hit.
Bullet train services to northern Japan were halted, rapid transit in Tokyo was suspended and some nuclear power plants automatically shut down.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said there had been no radiation leaks.
In a televised address, he extended his sympathy to the victims of the disaster and said an emergency response headquarters had been set up.
He said the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.4 while the US Geological Survey said it measured 8.9
