Wakayama Shingu City Oto Matsuri | JAPAN Forward
A team of roughly 2,000 men (referred to as noboriko) clad in white and sporting straw rope wrapped around their waists light pentagonal shaped torches with sacred fire in prayer for a good harvest and family safety. The view that unfolds as the men charge down from the shrine with torches in hand is as the lyrics of the Shingu-setsu song describe, like a flaming waterfall and winding fiery dragon. The festival is known as one of the most lively fire festivals in Japan. On the day of the festival, women are prohibited from the Kamikura-jinja Shrine grounds, but are able to watch the festivities from the path leading to the shrine.

【English】All About Hiraizumi #19 ‘Hashino iron mining and smelting site’World heritage approved
Broadcasted on August 19th, 2015
Following Hiraizumi, ‘Hashino iron mining and smelting site’ is designated as the 2nd World Heritage Site in Iwate prefecture. Here’s a congratulatory message from Hiraizumi Town Mayor.
Congratulation on the registration of Hashino iron mining and smelting site. Kamaishi citizens and related people’s passion like a blast furnace made the registration come true. I would like to offer my sincere congratulation to you all, and also would like tourists who come to Hiraizumi to visit Hashino as well by all means. Thank you very much.
8 areas and 23 assets including Hashino iron mining and smelting site were designated as World Heritage Sites named ‘Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining’ on July 5th, 2015.
The operating period of Hashino iron mining and smelting site was from 1858 to 1894 and it had 1,000 of employees and produced 930 tons of molten pig iron per year at its peak. It is said to have been the largest ironworks.
Under the supervision of Oshima Takato, a retainer of the Morioka domain, the operation has started with the initial test furnace. Then, the first blast furnace and the second one were constructed. The initial test furnace was repaired and used as the third furnace.
Hashino iron mining and smelting site is composed of three remains such as ‘Iron Ore Mine Site’, ‘Transportation Aisle’ and ‘Blast Furnace Sites’, but only remains of the blast furnaces are open to the public. The sites are the iron-making places where iron ore was pulverized and melted.
Mr. Miura who is the staff of Kamaishi Kanko Bussan Kyokai guides the sites for everybody to easily understand what has been done there.
He is stationed at Information Center and takes tourists to the site as a local guide.
Hashino iron mining and smelting site built and underpinned Japan’s industrial era. Why don’t you visit there?

Japan Travel: Yoshino cherry blossoms & Shugendo mountain worship, Nara45
Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama) in Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous cherry blossom spots. It is covered by over 30,000 cherry trees planted around the slopes. Visitors can walk along the roads that lead up the mountain admiring them.
Yoshino also offers a rich history, which makes it an interesting destination even without cherry blossoms at any time of the year. Yoshinoyama has been the base of the pilgrimage trail to sacred Mount Omine, a center of Shugendo mountain worship for many centuries. The remote town also served to give refuge to various historical personalities, including Emperor Go-Daigo who established a competing second imperial court there in the 14th century.
In 2004, Yoshino was designated a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Mount Koya and Kumano, as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

Tsurugi-jinja Shrine is in Ota, Echizen-cho in Fukui Prefecture and it has long history since before the Nara period (710-794). This area is as known as the place of origin of the Oda clan. Oda clan was a family of a feudal lord of Japan who was a large landowner in the mid 16th century.
Since the ancestors of the Oda clan were Shinto priests, Nobunaga Oda (1534-1582) who was a powerful feudal lord of Japan in the late 16th century strongly believed and protected Tsurugi Shrine as a guardian spirit.
