5 Days on the Kumano Kodo (熊野古道) - day by day
I spent five days on a pilgrimage on the Kumano Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage route in the Wakayama Province in Japan. It was such an amazing journey.
To find out more details about my trip you can visit my blog:
To find out more about this great route, you can visit It is the official website.
I took the Nakahechi Route from Tanabe over Hongu to Nachi. It was the most popular with ancient pilgrims. The great thing about this route is that there are so many relics from the ancient times. You can really get a feeling how it was to do this pilgrimage a few hundred years ago!
I have made different edits of my experience. This edits' focus lies on following the chronological order of the journey.

Hello friends :)
I feel like this vlog really shows how hard this track is. The truth, real and raw footage. I’m tired and watching this back I feel like I’m speaking monotone most of the time lol. So much sweat, few tears, not much optimism at all either ???? The Forrest has got to us! The inns we’ve been staying in are lovely so far, I’m grateful to experience different accommodation every day. Still would recommend it.. just not to anyone who doesn’t like Forrest or strenuous exercise OR being pushed, forced, booted out of your comfort zone.
If you enjoy this please support me by subscribing to my channel. Feel free to give any constructive feedback on my editing too as I’m always looking to improve. Video ideas are also welcome.

Where spirits become air: the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan
In September I hiked through the shrines and forests of coastal Japan, along a trail with a story that dates back to the 11th century. I made my way west to east on the Nakahechi route, staying at traditional inns and hot spring villages along the way. The Kumano Kodo is one of only two UNESCO-designated pilgrimage trails in the world.
I was there for 3 days, but it is possible to spend more than a week and traverse the entire trail, coast to coast. Traditionally, pilgrims would visit the Kumano Sanzan, the three head shrines of the region, and walk east to west.

Exploring Japan Episode 10 - Kumano Kodō (熊野古道)
IN THIS EPISODE
The Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail was the highlight of my five week trip in Japan. The overwhelming beauty of Japan's nature in combination with a physically challenging hike made for some emotional experiences. I started of in the seaside town Tanabe, a beautiful and quiet place. I stayed at ICHIE Café and had a great time eating and drinking with locals. The Kumano Kodo was supposed to be a solo-journey. But along the way I met some amazing new friends. Among them are Satoshi, who also shared a passion for photography and film. We met again a few days later in a hostel and shared our stories. And also Dan and Sara. We met on the evening of the first day. We talked a lot about travel, since Dan is an awesome airline pilot and together with Sara they saw pretty much every corner of our beautiful planet. The next day we spent the whole day hiking together to Hongu Taisha.
I closed of the part of the trail to Hongu Taisha in Yunomine Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in Japan. A cozy small village in a mountain valley. A very welcoming and relaxing place I highly recommend visiting if you're in need of escaping city life.
I'm not including the travel to Nachi Taisha in this video because I don't want it to get too long, it's already very long and slow as it is.
I hope this video inspires other's to visit this amazing part of Japan, it's an experience like no other. If I can help out with any questions on how to get here or plan the hike, feel free to ask.
