Pilgrimage to Kumano: Hayatama - Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine
Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine is located in Shingu, Wakayama prefecture. Feel the atmosphere which Kumano creates.
Kumano River Boat Tour - Shingu City
When visiting Shingu City, one must look into the ancient transportation of one of the most revered sites in the Wakayama Area
The Kumano River is a dominate landmark in the Kumano region running from North to South down the center of the Kii Peninsula. It served as a vital transportation link for the communities in the mountains and pilgrims past. Traditionally pilgrims travelled by boat from Kumano Hongu Taisha to Kumano Hayatama Taisha at the mouth of the river.
This sacred waterway is also considered an object of worship. Because of its spiritual aspects and use as part of the Nakahechi section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, it was included as UNESCO World Heritage in the property Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains Range.

Kumano Hongu Taisha - Wakayama - 熊野本宮大社 - 4K Ultra HD
The Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of Wakayama Kumano region's three famous shrines. Enshrining its own deity, Hongu Taisha also enshrines the deities of the other two Kumano shrines, Hayatama Taisha and Nachi Taisha, and the sun goddess Amaterasu. It serves as the head shrine of over 3000 Kumano shrines across Japan.
The history of Hongu Taisha goes as far as the 9th century and was located by the bank of Shingu River. Due to massive floods in 1889, the shrine was moved from its original location at Oyu no Hara to its present location one kilometer away. In front of Oyu no Hara (Oyunohara) stands the biggest torii gate in the world which is 33 meters tall.

Japan Travel: Kumano Hayatama Taisha Impressive museum Wakayama07
Hayatama Taisha, located in Shingu City on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula, is one of Kumano's three important shrines. Together with the other two shrines, Nachi Taisha and Hongu Taisha, Hayatama Taisha holds an important place in Japanese mythology.
Although the buildings were rebuilt recently, Hayatama Taisha has occupied the same spot on the Kumano Riverbank since at least the 12th century. Additionally, religious artifacts that date back to the 3rd century are evidence that the area has been a site of worship for much longer. Acutually, a Shinto creation myth claims that three Shinto deities descended to earth on a rock not far from the shrine.
As a result of its divine contact, the rock has been worshiped as a sacred object. An ancient tree (estimated to be morethan 800 years old) is located inside the shrine compound. It is also considered sacred. These two kami highlight the importance of nature worship to the area's beginnings.
In Hayatama Taisha's Treasure Hall , over a dozen national treasures, including offerings brought by pilgrims on the Kumano Kodo are on display The collection housed in this small museum is impressive.

Hayatama Shrine is one of three grand shrines of Kumano. This video is a quiet tour through the grounds of Hayatama shrine in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture in Japan. This little tour gives you a brief look at the inner grounds and shows people coming to offer their prayers. I have added a little commentary about the I Ching and the DNA helix connection and some shrine symbology that reminds us of this connection. This is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan and has an impression Museum of National Treasures.
FEELING ZEN IN SHINGU - First Day in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture
We ventured into Shingu Japan in the Wakayama Prefecture to get away from the crowds of the city and see what some Japanese peace and quiet was all about. Plenty of shrines, zen, and delicious food at the izakaya.

We are originally from the USA we left home in 2013 after graduating college. We then returned back to the US a year later to build a normal life. We quickly discovered that it wasn’t for us and left home for good in 2015. We were nomadic for over three years across six continents and 80 countries. It took us 500 blog posts, thousands of nights in different beds, a few horrible meals and a ton of amazing ones until we chose to base ourselves in the Canadian Rockies. Now we travel for half the year and explore the mountains for the other half. We are incredibly grateful for the life we live and hope we can help you meet your travel goals too!

The ULTIMATE Japanese experience
A little shorter than usual vlogs because I didn't spend a whole lot of time yapping your face off. There' was just too much beauty to soak in! LOVE this place!
For those who are probably gonna ask in the comments, yes I wanted to fly my drone here but no, I didn't purely because the situation just didn't feel right. This temple is most visited and holy temples in Japan and it just wouldn't feel right to disrespect the people who come here expecting the same peace that I got. It could've been done but the choice was made hahaha.

Oto Matsuri Festival at the Kumano Hayatama Taisha
The Oto Matsuri is a fire festival held every year on February 6th in Shingu city Japan. Men of all ages dress is white clothes with a thick straw rope wrapped around their waist.
During the day of the event participants, called noboriko, only eat white food (white symbolizes purity) and some perform shiogori, a purifying ritual in the ocean, before heading up the steep stone staircase towards a clearing below Gotobiki-iwa, associated with the nearby Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine.
Each participant carries a torch which is lit from a sacred fire. As the torches start to burn, the tension rises and finally erupts as the shrine gate bursts open, releasing the fiery dragon to race down the mountain.
The sky is illuminated orange as the sacred light reflects off of the blooms of rising smoke carrying the men’s hopes and wishes up to heaven.
Shingu City (Part One) - Things you should do on Day One!
I went to Shingu City in the Eastern Peninsula of Wakayama on Monday 16th of October 2017 to Tuesday 17th.
Usually, people do their annual pilgrimage in this area to climb Koya-san and visit the range of temples along the way to cleanse the human spirit.
If you're in Shingu City, consider this itinerary as Day One!
1. Jofuku Sushi
Considered Wakayama's best Sushi. Try out their Sanma Sushi, one of their local specialties.
2. Jofuku Koen.
One of the special areas in Shingu. Known as one of the resting areas of Xu Fu as he was trying to find the Elixir of Life.
3. Matsubaya
A sweets shop in Shingu City that has been run three generations of family.
4. Hayatama Taisha.
UNESCO World Heritage Site. A place to visit and see.
5. Kumano Boat Festival.
Occurring every year on the 16th of October. To celebrate the year of the Kumano Taisha. 9 boats race to an island in the middle of the river following after a Mikoshi, boarded on a boat.
From Tamaki Shrine to Kumano Nachi Taisha and Kushimoto 2018
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Kansai ]
tamaki Shrine
Tamaki-Jinja is located near the top of the Tamaki Mountain which is 1076m tall. It had been selected as the UNESCO World Heritage, as part of the Kiisanchi-no-reijo and Sankei-Michi. Starting off from the oldest Cedar tree, Jindaisugi which had been reported to be over 3000 year old, this Shrine is surrounded by the natural monument.
There are another shrine called Tamaishisha if you climb up from the precinct upon the top of the hill. Tamaishisha considered as the original of Tamaki-Jinja Shrine which has no main building only ancient pebble stone left.
Kumano Hayatama Taisha
Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社) is one of Kumano's three important shrines. It is located in Shingu City on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula. Together with the other two shrines, Hongu Taisha and Nachi Taisha, Hayatama Taisha holds an important place in Japanese mythology.
While the buildings were rebuilt recently, Hayatama Taisha has occupied the same spot on the Kumano Riverbank since at least the 12th century. In addition, religious artifacts that date back to the 3rd century are evidence that the area has been a site of worship for much longer. In fact, a Shinto creation myth claims that three kami (Shinto deities) descended to earth on a rock not far from the shrine.
Kumano Nachi Taisha
Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) is one of the three Kumano shrines, situated a few kilometers inland from the coastal hot spring resort of Katsuura. The shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites that exemplify the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that is particular to the Kumano region. The site also boasts the tallest waterfall in Japan.
Kushimoto
Kushimoto (串本) is located on the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula. The small town and its surroundings feature nice coastal scenery and several mildly interesting museums.
Cape Shionomisaki, just south of Kushimoto's town center, is the southernmost point of Japan's main island Honshu. A shrine and Shionomisaki Lighthouse stand nearby. The lighthouse contains a small museum with exhibits about the building and local history. It is also possible to climb to the top of the lighthouse.
UNESCO Kumano Kodo Nachi Taisha Great Shrine in Japan
Where else can a person be awed by temple and shrines from 1590, an 800-year old camphor tree, pagoda and sacred waterfall? At Nachi Taisha Great Shrine in Japan.
Warning! Prepare for 470+ steps up and 470+ steps down. Or hire a taxi up to the parking lot. The entire Great Shrine complex is stunning even in the rain when the brilliant oranges glow against the grey.
