Remains of ancient Patliputra in Kumhrar, Patna
In modern-day Patna, only two sites have survived indicating the existence of ancient India’s greatest city. This is Kumrahar, where remains of a pillared hall and a monastery can be seen. These structures were most likely constructed outside the walled city of Patliputra, which, save one small excavation site, has been totally wiped out. I think some other portions may still lie buried underneath other later-day or modern structures.
POPULAR PLACE KUMHARAR PATNA - BIHAR (INDIA)
Kumhrar or Kumrahar is the remains of an ancient city of Pataliputra, located 5 km of east from Patna Railway Station, on Road, Patna, Bihar.
Kumhrar is the site that consists of the archaeological excavations of Patliputra and marks the ancient capital of Ajatshatru, Chandragupta and Ashoka. Excavations at Kumhrar have resulted numerous structures and artifacts of the past.
Located some six kilometers south to Patna railway station, Kumhrar can be reached by auto rickshaws which are easily available. Remnants of historical city are spread all over and remind us of great and glorious history of Kumhrar.
Located on the Kankarbagh road, Kumhrar has been excavated many times. After the excavation of the site, relics have been found, which are according to some historians are from 600 BC to 600 AD. The most striking and relevant finding at the spot is the 80-pillared huge hall, which is said to have been the parliament of Chandragupta Maurya. According to archaeologists and historians, it dates back to 300 BC.
The parliament or assembly hall was an excellent specimen of architectural expertise. From ruins one can imagine how wonderful it would have been in its original form! Near the assembly hall is a brick made Buddhist monastery, popularly called Anand Bihar.

Patna is an ancient city that sprawls along the south bank of the Ganges River in Bihar, northeast India. The state capital, it’s home to Bihar Museum, a contemporary landmark exhibiting bronze sculptures and old coins from the region. Nearby, Indo-Saracenic–style Patna Museum displays a casket believed to contain the Buddha’s ashes. Close to the river, the Golghar is a domed colonial granary overlooking the city.
Southwest of peaceful Buddha Smriti Park, Mahavir Mandir is a centuries-old temple dedicated to the Hindu monkey god Hanuman. The Indira Gandhi Planetarium screens films about astronomy, and Srikrishna Science Centre’s interactive exhibits explore the oceans and dinosaurs. Close by, the Gandhi Museum displays photos and statues of the Indian independence leader. The Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library preserves thousands of manuscripts. Sikhs worship at the white-domed Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji. To the west, Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is a botanical garden and zoo.
Patna is the capital of Bihar, and the second largest metropolis in eastern India.
Fluxed by the three sacred rivers Ganga, Sone and the Poonpun, the journey of Patna through the ages can quite be an object of envy for any place brooding over its life-chronicle. The city tweets of a glorious past and perches on the briskness of a bustling and an up-and-coming metropolis. Legend has it that a sanctified Ganga had watched with reverence as a hallowed Buddha blessed this place to be a realm of great Kings and their Empires. Belonging to the blue family of cities with a royal heritage,it is the land where the greatest emperors of India walked, and where the greatest saints chose to preach. Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru was born here. For anyone with a taste for history and religion, this place flies high.
Today, it has become one of the fastest growing cities of India. With real estate booming at a dizzying pace, shopping malls, theaters, new businesses, food joints it carries all ingredients for a lively city life, and a tourist haven-to-be.
