Mt. Takuhi is the central pyroclastic cone of the Dozen Caldera, and the tallest mountain in the Dozen Islands (452m). Close to the summit of the mountain is the main building of the Takuhi Shrine, which is partially inside of a cave! The Takuhi Shrine is the oldest shrine building in the Oki Islands, and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This shrine is dedicated to the deity of safe sea voyages, and so people have come here to pray for safety at sea since long ago. The beautiful hike up to the shrine takes about 15 minutes from the car park.
