Kunkeshwar is a village in Maharashtra, India. This town is situated on the bank of Arabian Sea. There is a temple for the Hindu deity Shiva in the town. This temple is holy place in Konkan, and is also known as Konkan Kashi. Kunkeshwar is built along the sea. Kunkeshwar produces Alphonso mangoes. Kunkeshwar is located in the Sindhudurg district. Kunkeshwar is 16 kilometers away from Devgarh, 54 kilometers from Malvan and 60 kilometers from Kankavli. The nearest railway station is in Nandgaon which is approximately 42 kilometers away from Kunkeshwar. HISTORY OF KUNKESHWAR The temple of Kunkeshwar was built many years back. According to legend, a sailor traveling in the sea for trade came near the beach of Kunkeshwar. Suddenly a havoc appeared in sea. The sailor was a Muslim. The ship seemed to sink in the sea. He saw a lamp on that beach. He prayed to that lamp I don't know who you are. But if you will help me and stop the havoc I will build a temple for you. And his ship came to the seashore of Kunkeshwar without any problem. He built the temple as promised. The Lingam was already there. As the Sailor was a non-Hindu, he thought that his religion will not accept him. Therefore, he committed suicide from the top of temple.

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings.

This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan. Every year a huge celebration takes place on the occasion of Mahashivratri, which keeps religious beliefs in constant sight of the multitudes. During the festival a large number of devotees throng this place with their families and friends. This vigilant Shiva deity bestows blessings on everyone who surrenders to its feet.

Kunkeshwar Cave:
On the eastern side of the temple, one enjoys the sight of the cave with beautifully carved male and female warriors in black rock. With the presence of Ganesh idol along with Shiv-linga and Nandi in the center, this place is must see for every visitor.

क्षेत्र कुणकेश्वर.... कोकणातील एक पवित्र तिर्थक्षेत्र...अतीप्राचीन काळापासुन येथील कणकेच्या राईमध्ये वास्तव्य करुन असलेल्या शंभुमहादेवाची ही भुमी... कणकेच्या बनात असलेला ईश्वर म्हणजेच कुणकेश्वर... देवावरुन गावाचे नाव सुद्धा कुणकेश्वर असेच प्रचलीत झाले. सुमारे ११०० व्या शतकापासुन प्रसिद्धीला आलेले हे स्थान म्हणजे कोकणातील धार्मीक व ऐतिहासीक सौंदर्याचा मुकुटमणीच म्हणावा लागेल. कुणकेश्वर मंदिरा इतके प्राचीन भव्य देवालय कोकणात इतरत्र कुठेच नाही. पुणे, मुंबई, कोल्हापुर या शहरांशी देवगडहुन अवघ्या १८ कि.मी.
शिवरायांच्या काळात सुलतानी आक्रमणांचा उपद्रव पोचलेल्या असंख्य मंदिरांचा जिर्णोद्धार झालेला आहे. सुलतानी आक्रमणाने पिचलेल्या भारतात शिवरायांच्या पराक्रमाने पुन्हा एक परिवर्तनाची लाट आली. आणि मग आपल्या परमप्रिय दैवतांची पुनर्स्थापना करण्याची ओढ या मातीतील माणसाला होऊ लागली. कुणकेश्वर मंदिराचा झालेला जिर्णोद्धारही याच काळातील आहे. हा काळ शिवराज्याभिषेकानंतरचा. आजपासून जवळजवळ ३00 वर्षाँपूर्वीचा. शिवाजी महाराज हे प्रत्यक्ष कुणकेश्वर मंदिरातही येऊन गेल्याचे सांगितले जाते. कुणकेश्वर मंदिर हे काहीसे एका बाजुला असल्यामुळे व अतिशय दुर्गम असणार्‍या या भूप्रदेशामुळे सुलतानी आक्रमकांच्या आसुरी तांडवापासून काहीसे सुरक्षित राहीले. तरी शिवाजी महाराजांच्या मृत्युनंतर व औरंगजेब दक्षिणेत उतरल्यानंतर या मंदिराला उपसर्ग पोहोचला होता असे इतिहास सांगतो.

त्याकाळी छत्रपती शिवरायांच्या अष्टप्रधान मंडळापैकी एक असणार्‍या नारो निळकंठ अमात्य यांच्या अधिपत्याखाली हा विजयदुर्गपासूनचा सागरी प्रदेश होता. नारो निळकंठांची कुणकेश्वरावर अपार श्रद्धा होती. औरंगजेबाचा पुत्र शहाआलम हा घाट उतरुन या तळकोकणात आल्यामुळे आणीबाणीची परिस्थिती निर्माण झाली होती. त्यावेळी कुणकेश्वर मंदिर हे एक डोळ्यांत भरणारे मोठे तिर्थक्षेत्र होते. त्यामुळे कुणकेश्वर मंदिराला शहाआलम त्रास देईल अशी भिती नारो निळकंठांना वाटू लागली. त्यावेळी नारो पंडितांनी कुणकेश्वर परिसरातील ग्रामस्थांना विश्वासात घेऊन मंदिराच्या संरक्षणासाठी नक्कीच काहीतरी योजना केली असणार. त्यांनी जी उपाययोजना केली तीच ही अरबी व्यापाय्राची दंतकथा होय.! असे मत श्री शाम धुरी यांनी मांडले आहे.
नारोपंतांनी आपल्या आराध्य दैवताच्या रक्षणासाठी उपाययोजना सुरु केली.मंदिराच्या परिसरात प्रवेश करताच पहिल्याच दृष्टीक्षेपात दिसणार्‍या छोटया मंदिरातील मूर्ती हलवून तेथे मातीने लिंपून थडग्याच्या आकाराचा आभास निर्माण केला. या मंदिराच्या कळसाचे कोरीव बांधकाम तासून काढून व डागडुजी करुन त्याचा आकार घुमटासारखा केला. नंतर त्यांनी कुणकेश्वर मंदिर अरबी व्यापार्‍याने बांधल्याची हूल उठवली. त्याचबरोबर आपल्या तटपुंज्या लढावू माणसांना सोबत घेऊन नारो निळकंठ अमात्य हे मंदिर परिसरात तळ देऊन बसले. परंतु तरिही शहाआलमची नजर कुणकेश्वर मंदिरावर पडली. त्याने कुणकेश्वर मंदिरावर जोरदार हल्ला चढविला. मंदिराभोवतीच्या तटबंदीच्या आधारे आपल्या तोकडया बळानिशी मराठयांनी कडवा प्रतिकार केला. पण शहा आलमचा तडाखा भारी पडला. मराठयांची हार होत असलेली पाहून मंदिराच्या कळसातील गुप्त जागेत तळ देऊन बसलेल्या नारोपंतांनी अखेरीस स्वतः तलवार उपसली व मंदिराच्या शिखरावरुन हरहर महादेव अशी रणगर्जना करीत आक्रमकांच्या तोँडावरच उडी घेतली. या रोमांचकारी घटने मराठयांना चेव चढला. त्यांनी मोगल सैन्यावर जोरदार हल्ला चढविला. मराठयांचा तो रौद्रावतार पाहून मोगलांनी माघार घेतली. पण तोपर्यँत मंदिर परिसराचे बरेच नुकसान झालेले होते. झाल्या प्रकाराने नारोपंतांना जबर मानसिक धक्का बसला. या धक्यातून ते सावरले नाहीत. पुढे कुणकेश्वर येथेच त्यांचे निधन झाले. मंदिराच्या दक्षिण बाजुला जेथे त्यांनी उडी घेतली होती तेथेच त्यांचे समाधीचे तुळशी वृंदावन बांधण्यात आलेले आहे. कुणकेश्वरच्या पालखीच्या वेळी म्हटली जाणारी आरती ही अमात्य नारोपंतानीच लिहीलेली आहे. या आरतीतही नारोपंडितांच्या उडीचा स्पष्ट उल्लेख आहे.

कुणकेश्वर हे भारतातील महाराष्ट्राच्या कोकण प्रांतातील सिंधुदुर्ग जिल्ह्यात असलेल्या देवगड तालुक्यातील समुद्रकिनारी वसलेले एक गाव आहे. ते देवगड गावाच्या दक्षिणेस २० किलोमीटरवर आहे. कुणकेश्वर हे एक तीर्थक्षेत्र व पर्यटन स्थळ आहे. तसेच हे गाव 'हापूस आंब्या'साठी प्रसिद्ध आहे.

कुणकेश्वर येथे श्री देव कुणकेश्वर हे एक शिवमंदिर आहे. छत्रपती शिवरायांनी स्वतः या मंदिराचा जीर्णोद्धार केला होता. कुणकेश्वरला दक्षिण कोकणाची काशी म्हटले जाते.

दरवर्षी कुणकेश्वरला महाशिवरात्रीच्या निमित्ताने तीन दिवसांची यात्रा भरते. या यात्रेच्या निमित्ताने देऊळ्परिसरात मोठी जत्राही भरते. कलिंगडांचा बाजार आणि मालवणी खाजे हे या जत्रेचे खास वैशिष्ट्य आहे. या यात्रेला येणार्‍या सर्व देवस्वार्‍या काही अपवाद वगळता अजूनही आपल्या गावरयतेसहित पायी चालत येतात. कुणकेश्वर भेटीसाठी १२ किमी. अंतरावरून येत असलेल्या जामसंडेच्या दिर्बा-रामेश्वरसाठी तारांमुंबरी खाडीवर नौकासेतू बांधला जातो. दर २४ वर्षाँनी कुणकेश्वरच्या भेटीला येणार्‍या कोटकामते गावच्या भगवती मातेला त्या गावचे ग्रामस्थ उत्साहात वाजतगाजत कुणकेश्वर क्षेत्री आणतात. १६ किलोमीटरवरून येणार्‍या मुणगे गावची भगवती माता वाटेत विश्रांती न घेता पायी चालत येऊन कुणकेश्वरची भेट घेते. ५० किलोमीटरवरून येणारा मसुरे गावचा श्री भरतेश्वर पायी चालत गावरयतेसहित कुणकेश्वरच्या भेटीला येतो. तसेच किंजवडे-स्थानेश्वर, दाभोळे-पावणाई, टेंबवली-कवळाई, असे अनेक देव त्याच्या त्याच्या रयतेसह कुणकेश्वरची पायी वारी म्हणजेच यात्रा करतात.

कुणकेश्वर मंदिराजवळच प्रसिद्ध समुद्रकिनारा आहे. येथे दरवर्षी लाखोच्या संख्येने देशी व विदेशी पर्यटक भेट देतात. समुद्रातील जांभ्या दगडांवर सुमारे १०० शिवलिंगे कोरलेली आहेत. ओहटीच्या वेळी ही शिवलिंगे पाहायला मिळतात. कुणकेश्वर गावातील एका डोंगरात जांभ्या दगडात एक गुहा आहे. या गुहेत शिवलिंग, नंदी, तसेच स्त्री-पुरुषांचे अनेक दगडी मुखवटे आहेत.

कुणकेश्वर गावातील एका डोंगरात जांभ्या दगडात एक गुहा आहे. या गुहेत शिवलिंग, नंदी, तसेच स्त्री-पुरुषांचे अनेक दगडी मुखवटे आहेत.

Kunkeshwar is a village in Maharashtra, India.
This Village is situated on the bank of Arabian Sea. There is a temple for the Hindu deity Shiva in the town. This temple is holy place in Konkan, and is also known as Konkan Kashi.

Kunkeshwar is built along the sea. Kunkeshwar produces Alphonso mangoes.

Kunkeshwar is located in the Sindhudurg district. Kunkeshwar is 16 kilometers away from Devgarh, 54 kilometers from Malvan and 60 kilometers from Kankavli. The nearest railway station is in Nandgaon which is approximately 42 kilometers away from Kunkeshwar.

HISTORY OF KUNKESHWAR

The temple of Kunkeshwar was built many years back. According to legend, a sailor traveling in the sea for trade came near the beach of Kunkeshwar. Suddenly a havoc appeared in sea. The sailor was a Muslim. The ship seemed to sink in the sea. He saw a lamp on that beach. He prayed to that lamp I don't know who you are. But if you will help me and stop the havoc I will build a temple for you. And his ship came to the seashore of Kunkeshwar without any problem. He built the temple as promised. The Lingam was already there. As the Sailor was a non-Hindu, he thought that his religion will not accept him. Therefore he committed suicide from the top of temple.

Sindhudurg district is spread over an area of around 5,207 sq.kms. The population of the District is 8,68,825 as per census of 2001. The modern township of Sindhudurg Nagari is the headquarters of Sindhudurg district . The district is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the east, the Belgaum District (Karnataka state) and Goa on the South and the Ratnagiri district on the North. Sindhudurg being a coastal district, the climate is generally moist and humid and the temperature variations during the day and throughout the seasons are not large. Sindhudurg is accessible by road on the NH-17 which passes through major towns of Kankavli, Kudal and Sawantwadi or by the picturesque journey on the Konkan Railway which stops at Kankavli,Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi. या कोंकणातील सर्वात प्राचीन देवस्थान म्हणजे देवगड तालुक्यातील श्री क्षेत्र कुणकेश्वर होय. सुमारे ११व्या शतकात बांधण्यात आलेल्या या हेमाडपंथी मंदिरात कोंकणचा स्वामी स्वयंभू कुणकेश्वर आपल्या भक्तांची गाह्राणी,व्यथा ऐकत आहे व त्यांना ईच्छित फळ देत आहे. कोंकणची काशी म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असलेल्या या कुणकेश्वरचा वार्षिक उत्सव म्हणजेच श्री क्षेत्र कुणकेश्वर महाशिवरात्री यात्रा होय. आपल्या भगवंताच्या भेटीसाठी लाखो शिवभक्त या यात्रेच्या निमीत्ताने अरबी समुद्राच्या तिरी एकत्रित जमतात. अरबी सागर आणि जनसागराचा तो सुंदर मिलाफ म्हणता येईल.

कुणकेश्वरच्या पारंपारिक आरतीत वरिल चरण आहेत. हि आरती छत्रपती शिवरायांचे सहकारी निळो सोनदेव यांचे जेष्ठ पुत्र व शिवकालात विश्वासू मंत्री असलेले नारोपंत आमात्य यांनी लिहिलेली आहे. या चरणाचा अर्थ असा की, काशीक्षेत्र बहुत दूर असल्याने भगवान शंकर भक्तांना दर्शन देण्यासाठी स्वयंभू शिवलिंग रुपात येथे आले. तेव्हा काशिविश्वेश्वराचे दर्शन घ्यायचे असल्यास श्री कुणकेश्वराचे दर्शन घ्या. म्हणजे कुणकेश्वरची प्रतिकाशी अशी ओळख शिवकालापासूनच आहे. असे यावरुन दिसून येते. तर अशा या कोंकणकाशीच्या महासोहळ्याचे म्हणजेच कुणकेश्वर यात्रेचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे यात्रोत्सवाला देवाला भक्तांनी भेटावे हे तर ठरलेलेच असते पण कुणकेश्वर यात्रेला श्री देव कुणकेश्वराच्या भेटीला गावोगावचे देव आपल्या रयतेसहित येतात. देवाच्या भेटिला देव हे या यात्रेचे वैशिष्ट्य आहे. कुणकेश्वर हे गावोगावच्या ग्रामदैवतांचे 'पुरवणी' (प्रेरणस्त्रोत)क्षेत्र आहे. ईथे तिर्थस्नानाला येणारय्रा देवता, ग्रामदेवता अधिक सतेज होऊन परततात. अनेक ग्रामदैवतांचे, तरंगदैवतांचे अडथळे, दोष केवळ श्री क्षेत्र कुणकेश्वर येथे आगमन करताच दूर होतात असा अनुभव गावोगावच्या लोकांचा आहे.
ब्रिटीश सरकारच्या १८८० सालच्या बॉम्बे गॅझेट मधील प्रकरण १४ मध्ये याची नोंद मिळते ती अशी, माघ महिन्याच्या शेवटच्या दिवशी येथे मोठी यात्रा भरते. आजही या यात्रेमुळे अनेक लोकांना रोजगार प्राप्त होतो. कित्येक वर्षापासून यात्रेत भरणारा इळये येथील शेतकय्रांचा कलिंगड बाजार आजही मोठ्या प्रमाणात भरतो. विविध शेतीपयोगी अवजारे ही मोठ्या प्रमाणात विक्रीला येतात. वर्षानुवर्षे भाविकांच्या संख्येतही वाढ होत गेली. या यात्रेला महाराष्ट्रच नव्हे तर देशभरातून लाखो लोक येतात. उत्तर सिंधुदुर्गातील प्रत्येक गावच्या प्रत्येक घरातील एकतरी माणूस या यात्रेला येतच असतो. २५-३० वर्षापूर्वी जेव्हा हे भाविक कुणकेश्वरला यायचे तेव्हा वाहतुकीची सुविधा फारशी उपब्ध नसायची तेव्हा हे भाविक पायी चालत कुणकेश्वराची वारी करायचे. काही भावीक तर ६०-७० मैलावरुन पायी चालत यायचे. एवढे चालत जाण्यासाठी किमान २-३ दिवस तरी ल‍गायचे. वाटेत काळोख पडल्यावर कुठल्यातरी एका गावात भक्तांचा मुक्काम असायचा. ज्या घरात हे भक्तगण उतरायचे त्या घरातली सर्व माणसे ही या भावीकांची कुणकेश्वराने पाठविलेले पाहुणे समजून त्यांचा पाहुणचार करायचे. त्यातून दरवर्षी एकाच घरी मुक्काम केल्याने भावीकांचा एखाद्या घराशी संबंध कायमचा जुळला जायचा. त्यातून चांगला सुसंवाद घडत असे. पुढे का‍ळ बदलला तशी वाहतुकीची साधने निर्माण झाली. त्यामुळे भावीक वाहनाने यात्रेला येऊ लागले. हे झालं भक्तगणांच्या प्रवासा विषयी. यात्रेसाठी तेव्हाही आणि आताही गावोगावची ग्रामदैवते ही आपल्या रयतेसहित कुणकेश्वर भेटीला येतात. पूर्वी सर्वच ग्रामदैवते हि कुणकेश्वरची पा‍यी वारी कारायचे म्हणजेच यात्रा करायचे पण सध्या काही देवस्वाय्रा या वाहनाने कुणकेश्वरच्या वेशीपर्यंत आणून मग त्या अवसार काढून वेशीपा‍सून पायी चालत यात्रेत दाखल होतात. परंतु बहुतांशी गावकय्रांनी आपली पूर्वापार चालत आलेली परंपरा‍ कायम ठेवलेली आहे. मग त्यासाठी कुणकेश्वर भेटीसाठी 12 किमी. अंतरावरुन येत असलेल्या जामसंडेच्या दिर्बा-रामेश्वरसाठी तारांमुंबरी खाडीवर नौकासेतु बांधला जातो. सुमारे ३२ वर्षाँनी कुणकेश्वरच्या भेटीला येणाय्रा इनामदार संस्थान कोटकामते गावच्या भगवती मातेला त्या गावचे ग्रामस्थ उत्साहात वाजतगाजत कुणकेश्वर क्षेत्री आणतात. 16 किमी वरुन येणाय्रा मुणगे गावची भगवती माता वाटेत विश्रांती न घेता पायी चालत येऊन कुणकेश्वरची भेट घेते. अशा कितीतरी देवस्वाय्रा आजही कुणकेश्वरची पायी वारी करतात. म्हणूनच ही सर्वार्थाने कुणकेश्वर यात्रा होते यात्रेच्या कालावधीत कुणकेश्वर मंदिरात अखंडपणे भजनाचे स्वर घुमत असतात. कोंकणातील नामवंत भजनीबुवा दरवर्षी न चुकता कुणकेश्वरची भजनरुपी सेवा करतात.सलग ३०-३५ वर्षे यात्रेला भजन करणारी मंडळे ही यात आहेत.
या यात्रेचे आणखी एक वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे अमावास्येला होणारे पवित्र तिर्थस्नान यात्रेच्या दुसय्रा किंवा तिसय्रा दिवशी कुणकेश्वर भेटिला आलेल्या देवस्वाय्रा समुद्रस्नानासाठी कुणकेश्वरच्या किनाय्रावर दाखल होतात. हे दृष्य पाहणे म्हणजे एक वेगळाच अनुभव असतो. समुद्रस्नानासाठी आलेल्या देवता किनाय्रावर स्थिरावतात. मग मानकय्रांमार्फत समुद्राला श्रीफळ अर्पण करुन गाह्राणे केले जाते. मग संचारधारी तरंग घेऊन लाटेच्या दिशेने धावत जातात. त्यांच्यासोबत गावरयत ही तिर्थस्नान करते. ज्या तिर्थावर देवता स्नान करतात आणि ज्या समुद्रतिर्थावर खडकांमध्ये कोरण्यात आलेली शिवलींगे आहेत अशा तिर्थावर स्नान करणे म्हणजे पवित्रच म्हटले पाहीजे. समुद्रस्नान केल्यावर देवस्वाय्रा पुन्हा श्री कुणकेश्वराची भेट घेतात व आपल्या परतीच्या प्रवासाला निघतात. देवतांच्या पवित्र तिर्थस्नानाने कुणकेश्वर यात्रेची सांगता होते. तर कुणकेश्वरच्या महाशिवरात्री वार्षीकाची सांगता ही यात्रेच्या पाचव्या दिवशी लळीताने होते.
असा हा आगळावेगळा, निरनिराळ्या वैशिष्ट्यांनी भरलेला आणि दैवी अनूभूती देणारा कोंकणकाशीचा महासोहळाअवर्णनीय असाच आसतो.

Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra,India consisting of 98 villages.Devgad is known globally for its exports of locally grown Alphonso mangoes. Devgad is also widely known for its pure Alphonso mango cultivation/farming and the whole development has evolved due to undertaking of the cultivation of Alphonso mango farming. Mangos grown here are characterised by their distinct aroma, smooth exterior, thin skin and thick saffron pulp. The variety is different from the Alphonso mangoes grown in the Ratnagiri district. Such is the popularity of the Devgad Alphonso Mango that vendors often pass off other similar looking mangoes under the name of Devgad Alphonso.

Devgad Alphonso Mango is grown on an area of 45,000 acres and reaches a production of about 50,000 tons in a year of decent production. Devgad is also home to the oldest and biggest co-operative society of mango farmers in India, called the Devgad Taluka Amba Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Ltd, with 700 members and 25-year-old in 2013.

It is noted for its harbour, its beach, and a lighthouse built in 1915 at the Devgad fort. Shilahara dynasty Raja Bhoja II constructed Fort Vijaydurg (Gheria), ruled later by Adil Shah and eventually by King Shivaji and lastly Kanhoji Angre is a national monument situated 45 minutes by road from the main city of Devgad. Fort Vijaydurg, named as the Eastern Gibraltar because of its virtual impregnability, was impressive as seen by British, Dutch, Portuguese armies and travellers 400 years ago and even today as seen by visitors. The nearest railway station is Kankavli on Konkan Railway on Mumbai-Goa road. From Kankavli, one can get an auto-rickshaw or a state transport bus to reach Devgad-Vijaydurg. There is a wall under the sea at shores of the Vijaydurg built such that an enemy's ships, trying to attack, would crash and sink.

Fishing is carried out on a large scale in the sea as well as in the creeks throughout the taluka region. The staple diet of this region is rice and fish.

The first windmill project in Maharashtra was installed at Girye. 3 km from these windmills there is a 16th-century temple called as Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple, dedicated to lord shiva located at Rameshwar. There is a temple dedicated to the goddess Devi Bhagwati at the village of Munge. There are temples to God Vishweswarayya and Swami Kartikaswamy at Hindale village.. A small village known as Jamsande is situated near to Devgad. The famous Dirba Devi goddess temple is located in jamsande. It is approximately 4 km from the Devgad bus stand. Devgad is slowly becoming a tourist hot spot for tourists who want to avoid Goa beaches. This is perfect for family outing in a peaceful and calm backdrop.

The western coastline is highly sensitive, hence recently, Government of India installed static radar and electro-optic sensors at Devgad Lighthouse as a part of India's first coastal surveillance network. Devgad is one out of 46 locations chosen for the network and envisages real-time surveillance cover up to 25 nautical miles.
