Dragon's Gate, also known as Longmen in Chinese, is a popular hiking spot just outside of Kunming, Yunnan. The National Park offers spectacular views of Kunming and is just on the edge of the city.
To get to Dragon's Gate you can simply take the subway directly there. Take Line 3 to Western Hills Station, the last stop, and use exit A. A short walk will lead you to a shopping area as well as buses that will take you to the park entrance for a small fee. If you'd like you can walk to the park entrance as well although it can be a long walk. Alternatively you can take exit B on the subway and hire a van to take you to the parks South entrance, ride a bike there, or take a 2 hour walk.

Dragon Gate and Western Hills Kunming
HITravelTales.com team visits Dragon Gate and Western Hills Xishan Park just outside of Kunming, China. Not every must-see travel destination is so easy to get to. And that can make the journey even more of an adventure. Dragon Gate in the Western Hills (Xishan Forest Park) on the outskirts of Kunming, China, is one of those. The reasons we can list are many – green hills with forested walking paths, a breather from the sensory chaos of the city, temples and pavilions dating back to the 11th century, views of the region from about 8,200 feet (2,000 feet above the city itself), winding stone staircases, strolling monks, gardens, sculptures and also grottoes and tunnels carved out of the mountains rock face. Luosiwan is more like a wholesale market of Kunming but there're retails as well, It consists of 3 huge blocks and each block will take a few hours to complete. We only managed to cover 2 blocks as we had to go somewhere else to shop.

The Kunming western hills (Yunnan - China)
(EN) Western Hills of Kunming City are located about 15 kilometers to the western suburb of Kunming which consist of Huating Hill, Taihua Hill, Luohan Hill and etc. The hills stretch over 40 kilometers at altitude between 1900 meters to 2350 meters above sea level. When you look from afar, the hills look like a giant sleeping Buddha and therefore the hills are named as Sleeping Buddha Hills by some of the locals. However, the hills are also named as Sleeping Beauty Hills as the hills look like a pretty lady lying beside Dianchi Lake with her face upward and her face, chest as well as legs can be clearly seen.
The Western Hills has gained a reputation as the most pleasant environment in the world throughout the century. Besides having numerous artificial architectures, the hills are also blessed with evergreen forest and flourishing flowers throughout the years which create a wonderful environment for the tourists.
Huating Temple which located at the middle of the Western Hills is one of the largest temples in Yunnan Province. The temple was established about 900 years before and had experienced several times of destruction and reconstruction throughout the century. The entire temple that you can see today was reconstructed in year 1923. Three golden Buddha statues with kind expressions and 500 life-like arhats as well as golden figures of Laughing Buddha can be found within the temple.
Taihua Temple is another highlight of Western Hills which located at the Taihua Hill, the highest hill of the scenic area. Taihua Temple was constructed in Yuan Dynasty and is consisted of a collection of architectures. The temple is well known for the flourish floras especial the camellia and magnolia. So, spring is the best season for visitors who love flowers the most.
Highly perched on the cliff of Luohan Hill about 300 meters above Dianchi Lake, Sanqing Pavilion is just like a castle in the air. Besides having the opportunity to witness the unique architecture of a Taoist temple, you may also enjoy the panoramic view of Dianchi Lake when you are here. Longmen (Dragon Gate) which was also built on cliff is another must visit attractions within Western Hill of Kunming. The stone paths, stone rooms and stone Buddha figures are all carved with excellent craftsmanship on large natural rocks. This is the best point where you can enjoy the spectacle view of Dianchi Lake while experience the steepness of the hill.

Dragon Gate is located in Western Hills, Xishan Park, just outside Kunming. It is not well known to foreign visitors, but is a must see in Yunnan. There is an old saying: Once you enter the Dragon Gate, you will become famous and successful. It’s a symbol of good luck.
You can take subway line 3 from Kunming. Get off at the Western Hills Station. A bus will take you to Gas Yao Station. From there, you can take a golf cart style battery car to the start of the hike. For those not wanting to climb up a mountain, a cable car to the Dragon Gate Grottoes is also available, but was not operational the day I visited.
You begin by climbing several staircases. There are numerous temples and grottoes along the way. Soon, the climb will start getting more difficult and you’ll literally hike up the side of the mountain. The stone staircases carved into the mountain are quite amazing and offer a breathtaking view.
The actual Dragon gate teeters on the edge of a cliff. This and the surrounding grottoes were built between 1781 - 1853.
I continued climbing up, through man made tunnels and staircases. At the very top, you’ll find Lingxu Pavillion, which offers amazing views of Lake Dianchi and the city of Kunming.

龍門は昆明郊外の、西山森林公園にあります。海外からの観光客にはあまり知られていないようですが、雲南省で是非訪れてほしい場所です。昔からの言い伝えで、龍門をくぐると成功を収めると言われ、幸運のシンボルになっています。登竜門の語源とされています。
地下鉄3号線で終点の西山公園駅で降ります。そこからバスに乗りゲートに向かいます。そこからさらにゴルフカートのような電動の車に乗り、龍門の登り口まで行きます。龍門までの山道を上るのに自信のない人は、ケーブルカーもありますが、私の行った日は運行していませんでした。
まずはいくつもの石段を登っていきます。その途中、たくさんのお寺や洞窟があります。徐々に道は険しくなっていき、山肌ギリギリのところを登っていくことになります。断崖を掘削してできている石段はなんともよくできていて、そこから見える景色も素晴らしいものです。
龍門自体はとても急な断崖絶壁に建っています。龍門及びその周りの洞窟寺も1781年から1853年に建立されました。
龍門に着いた後もさらに上に登ることができます。頂上には凌虚阁と呼ばれる場所があり、滇池や昆明市街地を一望することができます。

After visiting the Stone Forest we spent a day in Kunming and decided to see the West Mountain Park. A very good decision. The cable car ride is awesome and the chair lift along the ridge is memorable but the finale is the walk down Dragon's Gate. Along the edge of the mountain with wonderful views across Dianqi Lake and spectacular, heart stopping views downwards this is a walk not to be missed.

Kunming waterfall park 昆明瀑布公园 is located in Shanshui new district of north Kunming . The main part of the park uses natural terrain divide to built a grand man-made waterfall, which is 12.5 meters in height and 400 meters in width, with a total investment of about 1.1 billion Yuan.
Dianchi Lake（滇池湖）also known as Lake Dian and Kunming Lake, is a large lake located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau close to Kunming, Yunnan, China. Its nickname is the Sparkling Pearl Embedded in a Highland and it was the model for the Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace in Beijing.

Video about my zhuhai-lijiang 5000km solo charity ride,,,kunming city was my first stay and visited famous place -dragon Gate temple,,,on mountain (can go by cable car will cost 14us$ with entry fees) or can climb by stairs will take 45-90 mins depends on person. During my visit I stayed at ancient town which is famous and near to Dian lake and pagoda temple .
