View of YUANTONG BUDDHIST TEMPLE, Kunming, Yunnan, CHINA ????????
Yuantong Temple is at the foot of Yuantong Hill in the northern part of Kunming. With a history of more than 1,200 years, it is one of the grandest as well as the most important Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province. King Yimouxun of the Nanzhao Kingdom built it during the late eighth century as a continuation of Putuoluo Temple, and the restorations performed from the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) onward had not changed its unique mixed architectural style of the Yuan (1271 - 1368) and Ming (1644 - 1911) Dynasties.
Unlike all other Buddhist temples, which are built on an ascendant, you enter Yuantong Temple from above and descend along a gently sloping garden path. The view before you starting your peaceful walk beneath the gigantic cypress trees that line the garden path to the temple with its extensive array of flowers and foliage is deeply restful and impressive. A memorial archway with four Chinese characters -Yuantong Shengjing (Yuantong Wonderland)-is standing on the halfway.
Yuantong Hall
The temple complex is built around Yuantong Hall (Mahavira Hall), which is known as the Fane on the Water for it is surrounded by a very large pond filled with limpid water and fish. A delicate stone bridge which has an elegant octagonal pavilion stands in the center connects Mahavira Hall and the Yuantong Temple entrance. The pavilion is connected to the rest of the complex by various bridges and walkways.
Yuan Dynasty Statues
Sakymuni, Amitabha and the Medicine Buddha, all Yuan Dynasty statues, are found in the main hall. The surrounding 500 Buddhist Arhats who are carved in the walls are rare treasures noted for their perfect proportions and lively appearances. Also in this hall are two ten meter high pillars from the Ming Dynasty that are each engraved with a dragon - one yellow and one green - who are trying to extend their bodies and claws into the air as if they are ready to fly. Like the Arhats, they impart the feeling that at any moment they could spring into action.
Stone Staircases
Outside, on each side of the main hall, there are stone staircases that are carved out of the mountainside and wind their way to the top of the hill. As you climb these stairs, there are ancient inscriptions along the way and various tone artworks that are considered the most important historical relics in Kunming. From the top of the stairs, you are presented with a terrific panoramic view of the entire complex. It is from here that you can most appreciate the architecture of the remarkable temple complex.
Copper Buddha Hall
In 1982, Thai Buddhists sent a copper statue of Sakymuni to Yuantong Temple as a symbol of friendship, and the statue is three and a half meters high and four tons in weight. A few years later, in 1985, a Copper Buddha Hall was built in a combination of Chinese and Tai styles to house this exquisite gift.
Buddhist Scriptures
Surrounding the temple pond are a series of halls where you will find old women praying, people sitting and chatting, ongoing classes in Buddhist scriptures, a magnificent calligraphy studio, an exhibit of temple photographs taken at the end of the Qing Dynasty by Auguste de Francois, a shop, a restaurant, and more.
Yuantong Temple is a working temple that also represents the Buddhism of China today. Along with the patronage of the local people of Kunming and Yunnan in general, Buddhists from around the world come here on pilgrimages to pay homage, there are special Buddhist services two times each month, and the Buddhist Association of Yunnan Province is located here. This temple plays a very important role in history and in the modern world.
Kunming Golden Temple
Another excellent day trip out of Kunming is the beautiful Golden Temple (金殿公园 - jīn diàn gōng yuán). This is a great place to get out of the concrete jungle, breathe the fresh air, and enjoy exploring an ancient Taoist temple inside a huge park.

The Taoist Golden Temple in Kunming, China
Sifu Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja takes his time and wanders through the Golden Temple in Yunnan province of China.
I love the harmony this Taoist Temple has, blending in perfectly with nature all around. I've spent days here just wandering around reading, meditating and enjoying the temple's peaceful atmosphere. The Golden Temple has long history with Taoism and Taoist martial arts as well. - Terry
Background:
Golden Temple is located on the Mingfeng Hill, 11 kilometers to the east of Kunming. It is the largest Taoist Tongwa (bronze-tiled) Temple in China and has been preserved almost completely since it was first built. It is commonly known as Jindian.
History
The history of the Golden Temple starts during the Ming Dynasty and the reign of the Emperor Wanli in 1602. At that time the governor of Yunnan Province was a devout Taoist who built this temple to honor the Taoist hero-god Zishi. According to legend, Zishi had a golden palace in the northernmost extremity of the universe. However, the Golden Temple didn't stay in its original place for very long. Just 35 years later, in 1637, the entire original temple was moved to Jizu (Chicken Foot) Mountain in western Yunnan.
Three decades later in 1671 during the Qing Dynasty, Wu Sangui, the governor of Yunnan Province, built an exact duplicate of the original temple. This temple was undisturbed for almost two hundred years until the Muslim rebellion of 1857, during which the Golden Temple suffered some damages. Emperor Guangxu ordered its complete repair and in 1890, using 250 tons (246 gross ton) of solid bronze, the entire temple was again rebuilt.
Heavenly Gates
The burnished copper gleamed like gold and that is why people named it the Golden Temple (Jindian). Since its last renovation, this beloved copper temple on the top of Mingfeng Hill has been well cared and has become the most famous Taoist shrine in Yunnan Province.
As with most Taoist temples, you approach it by climbing up a mountainside on winding stone steps and pass through a series of Heavenly Gates. The three Heavenly Gates of the Golden Temple are highly decorated with painted archivolts and carved beams and rafters.
The beautiful walk up the stairs to the temple helps you to leave your mundane cares behind you. You may well find that the closer you get to the Golden Temple, the more peaceful and lighthearted you feel as the extreme beauty of Mingfeng can create a sense of inner harmony to its visitors.
A double-edged sword
Among the interesting artifacts and artistry of the Golden Temple is a double-edged sword with the Big Dipper engraved on it. Legend has it that this sword, which weighs more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds), is the magic sword of Zhen Wu, a Taoist deity, who guards Mingfeng Hill.
Ancient camellia tree
Near the temple is a 600-year-old camellia tree that signals the approach of spring every February by giving hundreds of exquisite blossoms.
Bell Tower
Behind the Golden Temple, there is a three-story-high Bell Tower that was built in 1984 to house a large, 580-year-old copper bell which is three point five meters (16.4 feet) high and weighs an incredible 14 tons (13.7 gross tons).
Natural beauty of Mingfeng Hill
The hillside around the Golden Temple abounds with pine trees, evergreens, hardy cypresses, and a multitude of plants. As far back as the Qing Dynasty, the natural beauty of Mingfeng Hill has caused it to be acclaimed as the Fairyland of Mingfeng.

Jindian Park (Golden Temple Park), Kunming, Yunnan, China
Jindian Park or Golden Temple Park
Source Wikipedia
Golden Temple Park, or Jindian Park, is a large Taoist (bronze-tiled) (Tongwa) temple in Yunnan, China and has been preserved almost completely since it was first built. It is located on the Mingfeng Mountains, seven kilometres to the east of Kunming city, there is a fine building made of bronze. It is commonly known as Jindian (the Golden Temple).
The Golden Temple was first built in 1602 during the Ming dynasty. Yunnan was ordered to send the bronze ore from Dongchuan to central China to make coins. But a war blocked the road. The governor of Yunnan, Chen Yongbing, and Mu Changzuo, the Duke of Guizhou Province, ordered that the bronze be used to build a temple in imitation of the Taihe Palace and the Golden Temple on Tianzhu Peak in the Wudang Mountains, Hubei province. The temple was later moved to the Jizu Mountains in western Yunnan. During the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) in the Qing dynasty, Wu Sangui, a military general who had defected from the Ming dynasty to the Manchu-led Qing dynasty and opened Shanhai Pass for them, rebuilt the temple, keeping the original Hubei design. The bronze used weighed over 200 tons. The temple walls were made with cast panels covered with exquisite and diverse designs. They are examples of the smelting and casting techniques in Yunnan a few centuries ago.
In front of the staircase outside the Golden Temple, the wide branched camellias are called Diechi (Butterfly Wings). They are covered with thousands of flowers in the depth of winter. The two myrtles close by were planted in the Ming dynasty.
At the top of the mountain behind the temple hangs a 14-ton Great Bell of the Ming Yongle Era. 2.1 meters tall and 6.7 meters in circumference, the bell was cast in 1424 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor in the Ming dynasty. It used to hang in Xuanhua Mansion in Kunming to announce the time. When Kunming expanded however, it was moved to the Golden Temple. In recent years, the Temple has been expanded several times when the Parrot Garden, the Camellia Garden, and the Orchid Garden were added.

Inside China | Green Lake (Kunming) | Cui Hu Park - January 2020
Kunming, the modern capital city and transportation hub of China’s southern Yunnan province, has a large student population and a temperate year-round climate. Bridges and pavilions cross the islands of Cui Hu (Green Lake), a park designed in the 17th century. Nearby is Yuantong Si. A temple founded by Buddhists in the 8th century, it features a statue hall and a pond with an ornate stone bridge.
Green Lake Park, or Cui Hu Park (simplified Chinese: 翠湖公园; traditional Chinese: 翠湖公園; pinyin: Cuìhú Gōngyuán), is an urban park in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. It was established in the 20th century on the west side of the Wuhua Mountain and is sometimes described as a Jade in Kunming.
The park consists, in effect, of a group of 4 small sub-lakes linked by bridges in the traditional style. The lake was originally a water reservoir for the city.
Green Lake is ringed by a street, and along the edge of that are restaurants and tea houses (some with rooftop dining), shops, and hotels, including the upscale Green Lake Hotel and Grand Park Hotel (formerly the Harbour Plaza Hotel).
During the winter months, black-headed gulls from Siberia migrate to Green Lake and entertain the crowds of visitors as they circle around and snap up bread, usefully provided by a herd of local vendors, thrown up into the air by tourists. There are performances of pieces from Chinese operas and of folk music within and around the park.
Located in the park is the statue of one of Yunnan's most famous patriots - Nie Er, the composer of China's national anthem.
Green Lake Park was visited during The Amazing Race 18 when the park was featured as the Pit Stop of the 5th leg.
The park is just below the main gate to Yunnan University. The most famous building on the lake is Jiang Wu Tang, a tourist attraction.

Likely the final video slideshow from my trip to Kunming, China. This one has some nice elements to it, and is my first attempt at creating a logo. And once I figure out how to use Adobe Illustrator a little bit better, I'll embellish the logo. Until then, enjoy the pics and the music!
