Mountain Biking China | Kunming, Yunnan (1)
The trails on Bao Zhu Mountain are literally in Kunming City and most of the local riders live at the bottom of the mountain and get uplifts from little silver vans nicknamed bread vans (面包车 ???? ). There is a real mountain bike scene in Kunming and I was very lucky to be welcomed in and shown the fine trails that are on offer. The descents are shortish -- about 500m -- but good fun and you can jump straight back in a van at the bottom.
Kunming sits about 1800m above sea level and has a mild climate all year round, BUT the summer is wet and cool as my videos demonstrate.
Maybe Matt Hunter and his Trail Hunter team should come to Kunming and Yunnan and give it a ride...
Welcome to Kunming University of Science and Technology

Inter-Korean Soccer
[Anchor Lead]
Young soccer players from South and North Korea meet on the pitch in Kunming, China this week at an international under-15 championship. This is the first time the two Koreas will face each other in two years, since last year’s tournament was canceled over heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula.

This is an international sports training base in the Chinese city of Kunming where a spring-like weather continues throughout the year. Dressed in red uniforms, players diligently concentrate on their training. They are members of North Korea's April 25th Sports Club who are participating in the Ari Sport Cup International Under-15 Soccer Championship.
[Soundbite] Kim Ki-hyuk(Head of North Korea's April 25 Sports Club) : Our goal is to have experiences and exchanges with more international countries and to win on the international stage.
A total of six teams from South Korea, North Korea and China will compete in the championship. A youth soccer team from South Korea's Gangwon-do Province arrived in China six days ago and held an adaptation training session. The inaugural championship was held in Yeoncheon, South Korea, in 2014. The second edition was held in Pyongyang the following year. However, it was suspended last year due to North Korea's fourth nuclear test.
[Soundbite] Kim Kyung-sung(Inter-Korean Sports Exchange Association) : Sports exchanges should never be halted in any political environment in the future.
Gangwon-do Province Governor Choi Moon-soon attended a welcoming dinner, which was held late last night. South Korea proposed that North Korea participate in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The two Koreas also discussed ways to resume inter-Korean cultural exchanges, which have been halted over the strained cross-border relations. South and North Korean delegations agreed to hold two inter-Korean youth soccer matches a year. Next year, young soccer players from the two Koreas will face off in Pyongyang in the first half a

ChinaStartup: Making China love football
The famous American novelist Toni Morrison once said, “If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.”
That quote perhaps best describes the journey of Rowan Simons and his innovative football venture in China. During his first few visits to China, Simons, a British national, identified that the football market there was relatively underdeveloped. There weren’t enough clubs or teams at grassroots levels, despite the fact that there existed a huge fan base for football in China.

Canine competitors take to the athletics course
(11 Aug 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4049898
LEAD IN:
The Olympic games are underway in Rio de Janeiro.
But in Russia canine competitors have been showing off their talents at an international military dog competition near Moscow.
STORY-LINE:
Running, crawling and jumping... military dogs and their human trainers are speeding around an athletics course.
Sixteen dogs accompanied by their handlers took part in a military dog competition on the outskirts of Moscow recently.
The competition called Man's Best Friend is part of the Army Games 2016 programme - an international military competition organised by Russian Defence Ministry.
Servicemen from Kazakhstan, Belarus and China have taken part in the various stages of the contest, which included, among others, dog biathlon and a 300 metre race with obstacles.
The obstacle race took place at military base no. 32516 near Dmitrov, Moscow region, on Saturday where the famous Russian Red Star kennel is located.
This was the first time the base hosted an international event of this level.
I'm very happy that representatives of all these countries came here to take part in our competition, says Vladimir Fedorov, Lieutenant-colonel of the reserves and one of the most experienced dog trainer at Red Star.
We have a lot in common. I can point out high level of preparedness of the teams, the way they train and work with the dogs.
During the race, that lasted for about an hour, dogs of various breeds, mostly German shepherds, showed their skills in jumping over various barriers, running up and down a ladder, crawling under a metal net - all by their owner's side.
Some of the dogs took to the course easily, following commands with incredible precision, while others got confused. Fedorov says dogs feel pressure in the same way as humans and can lose focus in stressful situations.
After the competition a 30 minute long demonstration showed the various ways in which dogs are involved in the military. During the demos spectators had a chance to see how dogs target assailants and climb along ladders blind-folded.
Those who watched the show were impressed, like bank assistant Elena Kolesova who was there with her young son.
No doubt that we need such dogs, they are our security, our freedom and peace., says Kolesova We brought our child here today because his dream is to become a military dog trainer.
Red Star kennel has been operating since 1924 and several new breeds have been developed here, like Black Russian Terrier and Moscow Watchdog.
Both breeds can cope with the temperature extremes of the Russian climate and are mostly used as guard dogs.
According to Fedorov, when the kennel was just opened there wasn't much interest in developing breeds that would serve well for sensing drugs and explosives. Instead dogs were mostly used for guarding purposes.
Over 1,200 different breeds of dogs serve at Red Star at the moment and every 6 months 400 trained dogs leave the kennel for service in different military bases across Russia.
Among the spectators at Man's Best Friend were military attaches from various countries working in Moscow embassies. They also got to visit Red Star and where shown some of the breeds of dogs trained there.
All seemed to have enjoyed both the competition and the tour of the kennel, including Roberto Gracia Josef, Military Attache of the Cuban Embassy in Russia, who suggested his national team should take part in Russian Army Games next year.
I think that next year we must take part in these, let me call it Military Olympics, not as observers, but as participants he says.

Qingdao Rock Climbing | Climb Scout
An introduction to rock climbing in Qingdao, China. In this video I’ll show you the approach to access sport climbing at a couple of the crags on Mt. Fushan 浮山 and the bouldering on Mt. Jinling 金岭山. I hope this is helpful for any climbers located in or interested in Qingdao rock climbing.
If you just want to see climbing shots, skip to 4:40
I spent a couple months this fall in Qingdao, China to explore the rock climbing and enjoy life as a digital nomad. This video summarizes the climbing I found. Don’t be mistaken, there’s a lot more climbing here than my video shows. Qingdao holds over 300 boulder problems, 200 sport climbing routes, and 30 trad routes.
