Paintings, sculptures, prints and media art from the past 600 years – Bremen's Kunsthalle is home to many styles of art. The Kunsthalle art gallery re-opened in summer 2011 after two years of renovation and the addition of two new wings. This expansion has increased by almost a quarter the gallery's space for its collection and exhibitions. The prints and drawings collection, which includes more than 200,000 items, now has a modern counterpart and therefore double the space. Spacious studios and seminar rooms have provided additional space for the gallery's education programme, which caters for all ages.

Bremen's Kunstverein (art association) was founded in 1823 and still runs the Kunsthalle art gallery with its own funds. The collection offers an exceptional survey of European art and international modern art, spanning painting, sculpture, drawings, prints and media art from the Renaissance to the present day. A key focal point is the collection of French and German paintings from the 19th and 20th century, including important pieces by French Impressionists such as Monet, Manet and Cézanne, along with major paintings by Corinth, Liebermann, Beckmann and Modersohn-Becker. Media art pioneers such as Cage and Paik are represented by important installations.

The Kunsthalle Bremen is an art museum in Bremen, Germany. It is located close to the Bremen Old Town on the Culture Mile (German: Kulturmeile). The Kunsthalle was built in 1849, enlarged in 1902 by architect Eduard Gildemeister, and expanded several more times, most notably in 2011. Since 1977, the building has been designated a Kulturdenkmal on Germany's buildings heritage list.

The museum houses a collection of European paintings from the 14th century to the present day, sculptures from the 16th to 21st centuries and a New Media collection. Among its highlights are French and German paintings from the 19th and 20th century, including important works by Claude Monet, Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne, along with major paintings by Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Beckmann and Paula Modersohn-Becker. The New Media section features works by John Cage, Otto Piene, Peter Campus, Olafur Eliasson, and Nam June Paik. The Department of Prints and Drawings has 220,000 sheets from the 15th to 20th centuries, one of largest collections of its kind in Europe.

Landwirtschaft mitten in der Großstadt - das ist das Ziel von Biologe Michael Scheer und seinen Mitstreitern der Bremer Gemüsewerft. Die Stadtwirte verwandeln alte Industrieflächen in kleine Naturparadiese und machen Bremen mit ihren Hochbeet-Äckern zum größten Hopfen-Anbaugebiet nördlich der bayerischen Hallertau-Region.

Alles was wir brauchen sind grüne Daumen und ein bisschen Kreativität. Ein Blick auf die Ernte beweist, dass Michael Recht hat. In Tausenden Kisten auf Bremer Betonwüsten haben Kartoffeln, Spinat, Mangold, Zucchinis, Bohnen, Lavendel oder Kräuter ein Zuhause gefunden. Für die nötige Bestäubung der Pflanzen sorgen die Bienenvölker von Imkerin Anke Marth. Ist die Ernte reif, beliefern die Stadtbauern Restaurants und Schulkantinen mit ihrer Ware - frisch vom Beet auf den Teller. Eine Besonderheit ist der Hopfen, der aus Hunderten Kisten an einem Maschendraht hochklettert. Er wird speziell für eine Bremer Craft-Beer-Brauerei angepflanzt.

Derzeit steht Michael mit seinem Team vor der größten Eroberung: Ein 3.000 Quadratmeter altes Industrieareal an der Weser muss noch dieses Jahr beackert werden: Beete müssen her und dann bepflanzt, gegossen und schließlich geerntet werden - jede helfende Hand wird gebraucht. Die Dokumentation aus der Reihe NaturNah begleitet den urbanen Landwirt Michael Scheer und sein Team durch den Bremer Sommer und zeigt, wie durch Engagement eine Großstadt wieder grün werden kann.

Imagefilm Der Kunstpreis der Böttcherstraße in Bremen

Der Kunstpreis der Böttcherstraße ist einer der ältesten und bedeutendsten Preise für junge Kunst in Deutschland. Er wird alle zwei Jahre in Bremen vergeben und ist mit 30.000 Euro dotierte. Getragen wird er vom Stifterkreis des Kunstvereins in Bremen.
Alle zwei Jahre beruft der Stifterkreis eine zehnköpfige Vorschlagskommission. Jedes Mitglied dieser Vorschlagskommission benennt jeweils einen Künstler. Am Ende dieser Kunstpreis-Ausstellung bestimmen die Mitglieder der Jury (die nicht Mitglieder der Vorschlagskommission sein dürfen) den Preisträger/die Preisträgerin.

Kunsthalle Bremen: Mit Liebermann zu den Anfängen des modernen Sports

Die Ausstellung untersucht erstmals Max Liebermanns Blick auf Bewegung und Sport und erzählt zugleich die Geschichte vom Reiten, Tennis und Polo in der Kunst. Werke von Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet und Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec veranschaulichen Liebermanns Inspiration durch die französische Malerei und Graphik. Seine Darstellungen der Tennis- und Polospieler sind in Frankreich und Deutschland ohnegleichen. Die Einzigartigkeit seiner Motive wird durch die Betrachtung ausgewählter Werke englischer und deutscher Zeitgenossen wie John Lavery oder Max Slevogt deutlich.

„Der blinde Fleck. Bremen und die Kunst in der Kolonialzeit“

Während der Laufzeit der Ausstellung „Der blinde Fleck. Bremen und die Kunst in der Kolonialzeit“ (5. August – 19. November 2017) in der Kunsthalle Bremen präsentiert Hew Locke in der Oberen Rathaushalle seine Arbeit „Cui Bono“. Das Schiff greift sowohl Bremer Geschichte als auch aktuelle Themen von Migration und Handel auf.
Der britisch-guyanische Künstler Hew Locke (*1959 in Edinburgh, Schottland) untersucht seit 30 Jahren Themen des Kolonialismus und der Globalisierung. Seine Werke reichen von raumfüllenden Installationen aus Karton über Fotocollagen und Perltapisserien bis hin zu Zeichnungen und multimedialen Skulpturen.

For the exhibition “The Blind Spot: Bremen, Colonialism and Art” at the Kunsthalle Bremen (5 August – 19 November 2017), Hew Locke has created a spectacular and provocative intervention in the historic town hall of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. His work “Cui Bono” replaces one of the large-scale ship models hanging from the ceiling of the town hall’s main gallery. His ship sculpture makes reference to the trading and shipping history of Bremen as well as to current issues relating to migration and flight.
For the past 30 years, the British-Guyanese artist Hew Locke (*1959 in Edinburgh, Scotland) has explored themes relating to race, colonialism and globalization.

Bremen is a city in northwest Germany. Located on the Weser River Bremen is by Hanseatic buildings on the Market Square and in Germany by the fairy tale Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians of Bremen).

We start our winter walk at the central train station and walk towards the market square. There the Christmas Market is going with many people enjoying the food there. We see the impressive town hall and visit the St. Peter’s Cathedral with medieval crypts and walk east out of the city centre with Kunsthalle Bremen an Theater am Goetheplatz. There we stroll quickly through some area with townhouses and return westward to a highlight of Bremen - the Schnoorviertel.

The Schnoor neighbourhood in the medieval centre of Bremen. The medieval character is preserved with tiny streets and old houses. It's a popular tourist spot and we manage to see this interesting area.

We head back to the old town, walk along the Weser river and see another Christmas market. At last we finish our walk on the Bürgermeister Schmid Brücke.

The exhibition “Jason Rhoades, Four Roads” at the Kunsthalle Bremen is the first retrospective of the artist’s work since his untimely death eight years ago. It presents four central, large-scale installations from different phases of his oeuvre, which in turn embody four essential aspects of his work: Garage Renovation New York, CHERRY Makita, 1993, The Creation Myth, 1998, Sutter’s Mill, 2000 and My Madinah: In pursuit of my ermitage…, 2004/2013. A concentrated group of objects and sculptures will complement the four installations.
“Jason Rhoades, Four Roads” is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania and curated by ICA Chief Curator, Ingrid Schaffner. This exhibition is made possible by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The exhibition is a cooperation of the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Kunsthalle Bremen and BALTIC, Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead.

Die Ausstellung „Jason Rhoades, Four Roads“ ist die erste umfassende Werkschau nach dem frühen Tod des Künstlers vor acht Jahren. Sie präsentiert vier zentrale Großinstallationen aus verschiedenen Werkphasen, die wiederum vier essentielle Aspekte, four Roads, in seinem Schaffen verkörpern: Garage Renovation New York, CHERRY Makita, 1993, The Creation Myth, 1998, Sutter’s Mill, 2000 und Untitled, from My Madinah: In pursuit of my ermitage…, 2004/2013. Die spektakulären Rauminstallationen breiten sich auf über 900 Quadratmetern des Museums aus und bieten dem Publikum in Deutschland erstmals die Möglichkeit, in umfassender Form in das facettenreiche Denken und Schaffen von Jason Rhoades vom Beginn seiner künstlerischen Karriere bis kurz vor seinem Tod einzutauchen. Ergänzt werden die Rauminstallationen durch eine konzentrierte Gruppe von Multiples und Skulpturen, die exklusiv nur in der Kunsthalle Bremen zu sehen sein werden. Darunter ist das aus einem umgebauten Auto bestehende Werk Smoking Fiero to Illustrate the Aerodinamics of Social Interaction, 1994, das während der Ausstellung im Neuen Studiensaal der Kunsthalle geparkt ist.
„Jason Rhoades, Four Roads” wurde vom Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania organisiert und von ICA Chief Curator, Ingrid Schaffner, kuratiert. Die Ausstellung wurde durch das Pew Center for Arts & Heritage ermöglicht und ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, der Kunsthalle Bremen und BALTIC, Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead.
