POPULAR INTERNATIONAL MARKETS ARE MAKING DISTINCTIVE NATIONAL PRODUCTS AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Background
The participation of TMK (the Service Centre for Finnish Outdoor Markets) in joint European projects has borne fruit. Finnish traders have ventured into the European Market events of Central Europe as well as the discerning Christmas markets of Germany. In return, German, English, Italian and Dutch traders have visited Finland to sell their wares at different venues.
International Markets
International Market events are the pinnacle of markets. Only a handful of selected traders selling high quality, specialist products are permitted to participate from each country or specific region. Dealing directly with vendors is quite an experience for the average consumer e.g. purchasing pasta from an Italian trader or buying chocolate from a Belgian vendor trading from their elaborately decorated catering units. A group of around 250-traders, dealing in high quality produce, tour the International Market events. Continuously on tour with them is Jari Mäkelä, an entrepreneur from Pori, Finland, who specializes in Finnish handicrafts and products from Lapland e.g. linen products, knitwear, witch drums and reindeer bone necklaces and hides. Currently, Mäkelä mainly tours the markets in Italy, Holland and England.
Experiences from the market places of Europe
According to Jari Mäkelä, only vendors who take their business seriously and deal in national specialities are permitted to participate. The organizers of the European Market, Italian FIVA and EMF from Holland were excited about getting a Finnish trader and matters were dealt with swiftly. “Passable English” was enough to take care of all the practicalities.
The first European Market was held in Enschend, Holland and everything went well despite preliminary tensions. The market was located in the city centre and a dance festival held in conjunction guaranteed plenty of customers. According to Mäkelä, his 4×8 metre stand was continually photographed and created interest with the local TV station and press as well. Trading was busy and many new associations were formed proving the idea for a European Market was a success.
The first Finnish International market outdid expectations
Participating traders contacted Jari Mäkelä and asked him to organize a International Market in Finland. It was considered strange that Finnish traders were able to take part in Italian market events but Italians were unable to do so in Finland. Mäkelä then contacted Ari Kallas of the Service Centre for Finnish Outdoor Markets to suggest that the traders in question participate in events in Finland from July to August 2012. Two events were chosen as trial runs. The International Market in Tampere 19-21.7.2012 and the Kotka Maritime Festival 26-29.7.2012, both exceeded expectations and raised interest in Finland and the International market event. Fulfilling these expectations we arranged five-week International Market tour at Finland in 2013 and eight-week International Market tour in 2014. Both tours were big success.

Branch Boy Sculpture - Oksapoika patsas - Kuopio Finland 2014
Kuopio City Center Market Place Finland 17.9.2014
New Branch Boy Sculpture
.
Seemingly blinded by a smudge of gold across his brow, a strange sculpture stands with its mouth partly agape. Its bronze body is adorned with boughs and branches. This six-foot metallic child is Branch Boy (“Oksapoika” in Finnish), the centerpiece of a bizarre folkloric sculpture trail. Branch Boy’s feet are sunk into the sidewalk, or perhaps just missing, and he appears to have mislaid at least one of his hands. By following the direction of the sculpture’s empty-socketed gaze, eagle-eyed observers may spot a second part of this odd sculpture trail. Branch Boy seems to be watching a pair of fairy-like representations of the ancient Finnish Sun and Moon goddesses, Kuutar and Päivätär, frozen in an eternal chase around a nearby lamppost. The goddesses have no heads, nor any other body parts to speak of, being represented simply by tiny bronze dresses. Sculptor Johannes Takanen, year 1884 in Rome, Italy.
Häntä pidetään Suomen kansallisfilosofina ja yhtenä tärkeimmistä kansallisista herättäjistä. was an influential Fennoman philosopher and Finnish statesman, ennobled in 1866. He was one of the most important national awakeners alongside Elias Lönnrot and J. L. Runeberg. As a consequence Snellman exiled himself to Sweden and Germany, more or less voluntarily, from 1839 to 1842. By the time he returned to Helsinki, his popularity had increased further, but the political juncture did not allow the university to employ him. Instead, he took up the position as headmaster for a school in distant Kuopio and published starkly polemical periodicals, including the paper Saima in Swedish, which advocated the duty of the educated classes to take up the language of the then circa 85% majority of Finns, and develop Finnish into a language of the civilized world useful for academic works, fine arts, state craft, and nation building. first appeared on a 1960 coin, commemorating the introduction of the markka denomination in 1860. He was recently selected as the main motif for another commemorative coin, the 10 euro commemorative coin, minted in 2006 celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth. The obverse depicts J.V. Snellman. It also depicts the logo of the Europe Coins Programme. The reverse design features represent the dawn of Finnish culture. Light Ball work of art ???? Muuntamo NO 149 Valotaideteos ???? Kuopio Energy
Kuopio, Finland, EU. 16.8.2019. Tulliportinkatu 31, 70100 Kuopio.
Muuntamo No 149 on Kuopion Energian 100-vuotisjuhlavuoden kunniaksi tilattu teos. Muuntamo No 49 sisällä loistaa laservalo silloin, kun teoksen ympäristössä on tarpeeksi hämärää. Patsas on jalustallinen veistos, joka on yleensä suhteellisen suurikokoinen ja näkyvälle julkiselle paikalle sijoitettu. Ne kuvaavat tavallisesti henkilöä tai toimivat muistomerkkinä. Pientä (ihmisaiheista) patsasta sanotaan figuriiniksi. Myös rintakuva on patsas. A statue is a free-standing sculpture in which the realistic, full-length figures of persons or animals or non-representational forms are carved in a durable material like wood, metal, or stone. Typical statues are life-sized or close to life-size; a sculpture that represents persons or animals in full figure but that is small enough to lift and carry is a statuette or figurine, while one more than twice life-size is a colossal statue. Statues have been produced in many cultures from prehistory to the present; the oldest known statue dating to about 30,000 years ago. Statues represent many different people and animals, real and mythical. Many statues are placed in public places as public art. The world's tallest statue, Statue of Unity, is 182 metres (597 ft) tall and is located near the Narmada dam in Gujarat, India.

MFA Friday Clip: Finnish Architecture. Review 2018 - Helsinki City Theatre Restoration
MFA Friday Clip series presents videos of the latest biennial review projects. This week: the restoration of Helsinki City Theatre by LPR Architects.
Helsinki City Theatre is the crowning achievement of Timo Penttilä’s career as an architect. The restoration work finished in 2017 by Turku-based LPR Architects is among the selections of the jury for the Finnish Architecture Review 2018. LPR Architects have taken special care to preserve the character of Penttilä’s original 1960s design, complete with its distinctive sequence of spaces and panoramic views of the surrounding park.
Outwardly no changes are visible: all new technology is concealed, and the façades and public areas have been restored to their former appearance. All the detailing is exactly as it originally was: the carpeting and other textiles were renewed in their original colour scheme and the latticework was reconstructed with loving attention to detail.
The restoration for the Helsinki City Theatre by LPR Architects is one of the 16 jury selections for the Finnish Architecture Review 2018.
About the review:
Finland’s biennial architectural reviews present a selection of recent projects showcasing new trends and high standards of excellence in Finnish architecture. The projects offer an example of recent accomplishments in high-level contemporary planning, renovation, and sustainable, responsible design. The review is organized by the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and the Alvar Aalto Foundation.
MFA Friday Clip: Finnish Architecture 2016 – Meilahti Tower Hospital

Its renovation, implemented by SARC Architects and Architect Group Reino Koivula, was completed in 2014. Architects Antti-Matti Siikala and Sakari Forsman reflect on the changes that had to be made to the detailing and structure while still preserving the iconic status of the building. Architect Susanna Kalkkinen discusses architecture's potetial to promote patients' healing process.
