Cambodia's Kampot pepper industry hopes for a bumper 2019

Cambodia is developing new markets for its highly-prized Kampot pepper - the country's only product granted official protected geographical indication, or PGI, status by the European Union.
Production of Kampot pepper rose only slightly in 2018 due to bad weather, but growers are expecting a bumper crop in the New Year.
STORY-LINE:
Flanked by sea and mountains, and with a quartz-rich soil, pepper aficionados say this is the perfect place on earth to grow the spice.
Pepper farming was first recorded here in the 13th century and developed centuries later by French colonialists who produced 8,000 tons a year by the early 1900s.
There are about 450 farms producing Kampot pepper today in a designated area covering just 250 hectares in Kampot and Kep provinces.
Celebrity chefs from Paris to New York swear by the pepper, a spice with a tragic past that is now reclaiming its global pre-eminence.
After their 1975 victory, the Khmer Rouge deemed the king of spice too decadent for their ultra-revolution and the pepper posts were pulled up.
A Japanese aid worker, Hironobu Kurata, spearheaded a revival in the mid-1990s but by as late as 2000, only 2 tons were grown annually.
According to Hout Soky, board member of the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association, 70 tons of the spice were produced in 2018.
For comparison, neighbouring Vietnam - the world's top pepper producer- produced some 145,000 tons last year.
We're expecting production to increase in 2019, says Hout. Kampot pepper is already well known in some international markets but we're also developing some new markets. We are developing these new markets based on the quality and reputation of Kampot pepper which is considered to be the best pepper in the world. We are working very hard to improve the quality of Kampot pepper and to promote it so we can help the local people.
Kampot pepper's traditional markets are the EU, US and Japan but there are plans to expand into new markets including South Korea and Hong Kong.
In 2016 Kampot pepper was awarded Protected Geographical Indication, or PGI, status by the European Union, which identifies unique products - like Parma ham or Champagne - as originating in a specific region.
That drove the price of Kampot red pepper there to as much as 378 euros per kilogram in 2017 compared to about 7 euros for one kilo of Vietnamese pepper.
Keak Heng, Agricultural Director at La Plantation pepper farm, says many local people would have to emigrate to nearby Thailand if it wasn't for the pepper industry.
Growing Kampot pepper has allowed me to take care of my family, my children have a good standard of living, says Keak. I want the Cambodian people to know how important it is that we grow Kampot pepper here. It's important that we preserve the traditional styles for the next generation. Plus this project helps a lot of local people, especially the school project.
The rebirth of Kampot pepper has greatly benefited the local community, paying for new roads, medical clinics and schools.
Pepper farming is also one of the biggest employers in the impoverished province.
At La Plantation, for example, where 20,000 pepper trees are grown on a rolling green landscape, hundreds of local people benefit economically, says Belgian Guy Porre who operates the plantation with his French wife Nathalie Chaboche.
A recent industry report says European demand for Kampot pepper is about 200 tons, more than twice current production, causing prices to spike.

Japan-Cambodia Kizuna Festival 2018, which is the combination of CJCC Festival and Japan Week Festival of Embassy of Japan, Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center, and Japan Foundation Asia Center in the purpose to introduce Japanese traditional and modern culture in Cambodia and promote cultural exchange between the two nations. The event was held from February 22-25, 2018. The theme of Kizuna Festival 2018 is “Beat of Japan”.
There are various cultural events and exhibitions were organized during the festival.

Tanabata Festival is a Japanese traditional celebration and celebrated every year on July 7 in Japan, and to recall a story of a lover in the heaven Weaver Princess and Cowboy. According to the story of Tanabata, the two lovers are separated by the Amanogawa and allowed to meet once per year on July 7. At that time, Japanese people write their wishes on the wishing paper and hang it on the bamboo tree to have their wishes granted. Japanese people believe that they wish to be the same as the two lovers since they are very hard working and skillful person in doing their tasks. This year, Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, Japan Foundation Asia Center and Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Centre (CJCC) will celebrate this event for the purpose of introducing culture exchange between the two nations, to be held from 5 July to 6 July 2018.

町の中心部から7km のところにある2つの山。
高い山が女山、低い山が男山。
男女のグループが山を競い合って造り、女性が知恵を使って男性に勝ったという伝説がある。
このことから、カンボジアは女系社会となり、男性が婿入りをするようになったといわれる。
男山は車で頂上へ行けるが、女山は217 段の階段を昇る。
頂上にはそれぞれ、仏教寺院が建つ。

2018年2月カンボジア農場報告（胡椒、養豚、魚、ワニ、スッポン養殖）
2018年2月のカンボジア農場報告レポートです。一緒にやっている友人たちと一緒に訪問しました。
胡椒は1年程度でようやく収穫レベルに達しました。
また、養豚も500匹の出荷でした。
その他ワニやスッポンも順調に育っていました。

カンボジア人は信号待ちでセンターラインを越えたりします。
観光などでトゥクトゥクに乗った時は驚かないでください。^^;

後半は胡椒畑での胡椒のチェックおよび、子豚の搬入作業になります。
KEP DRONE FOOTAGE
カンボジアでも蟹が有名なケップを空撮。
ケップは海が濁っており、その為蟹が繁殖し沢山生息しています。
しかし近年、乱獲と蟹加工工場が建ち、以前と比べ蟹のサイズが小さいものばかりになっているそうです。
ケップは蟹というイメージがありますが、平地・山にも恵まれ、塩田・マンゴー・胡椒も取れます。
最近ではペッパーロードというエリアもあり、レストラン併設型の農園では欧米人が沢山賑わっています。
こちらは海を中心にした撮影です。
