5-6 October 2019
After some delay with our flight to #Sapporo we reached the Chitose Airport late in the afternoon. We picked up the Mobile Home (or campervan) and drove out of the Sapporo-Chitose district.
We found a pace in Mikasa to stay overnight. It was just a parking lot with ‘happy’ toilets and a small supermarket. It was a nice place to stay.
After breakfast we continued to our first destination on Hokkaido: the Daisetsuzan National Park. The lady in the visitor center advised us to climb the Mount Kurodake. The wetter was fine and we were early enough to do so. We took the Daisetsuzan Ropeway and the Daisetsuzan Chairlift to save some time. On the top of the Mount Kurodake the view was fantastic. We enjoyed some time on the top. Of course Harry had to make one of his favorite planks.
In the evening we visited the Sounkyo Miracle Illuminated. It was very cold and not so spectacular as we had hoped for.

Daisetsuzan National Park “Sounkyo”
Daisetsuzan National Park “Sounkyo”
Sounkyo Gorge is a key base from which visitors can experience Daisetsuzan National Park. Towering right above Sounkyo Gorge is Mt. Kuro-dake. Take a ropeway followed by a lift to reach the seventh station of the peak. Densely growing alpine plants bloom in July and August between the seventh gou and the summit of the mountain. In autumn, the yellowing leaves of gold birch trees, the crimson foliage of mountain ash trees, and the green needles of dwarf stone pines come together in a display of exquisite perfection to tinge the side of the mountain in blazing fall colors.
At the foot of the mountain can be found the Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls from which water coming down from Mt. Daisetsu cascades down through columnar joints on the sheer cliff. Ginga Waterfall is composed of thin, silvery rivulets of gracefully flowing water. In contrast, Ryusei Waterfall comprises a powerful, thick jet of water bursting forth from the rock. Also referred to by locals as the Wife and husband falls, the Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls have both been selected as one of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan.

Japan Travel: Exploring Daisetsuzan National Park through Mount Kurodake, Hokkaido 14
Japan Travel: Exploring Daisetsuzan National Park through Mount Kurodake, Hokkaido 14
Mount Kurodake (黒岳, Kurodake) is located in central Hokkaido. Though it has a 1984 meter high peak, the ropeway and chair lift constructed on the mountain, makes the peak of Mount Kurodake very easy to access within the peaks in Daisetsuzan National Park. Mount Kurodake is also a popular entry point for hikers wishing to explore the inner parts of the national park.
Sounkyo Onsen is connected to the Kurodake Ropeway by an upper station at the 5th Station. The upper station has an observation deck where visitors can view the gorge below. Visitors need to walk a few hundred meters through the forest to arrive at the chair lift. The chair lift will take visitors to 7th Station of Kurodake, seven tenths up the mountain. From the upper chair lift station, visitors will need to climb 60 to 90 minutes to the summit. Though the climb is quite steep, the hikers are rewarded with views of the inner areas of the Daisetsuzan Mountains.
From here, advanced hikers can continue to the various other peaks that surround the large Ohachidaira Caldera in the center of the Daisetsuzan Mountains. One of the popular trails which connects Kurodake with Asahidake Onsen (via Mount Asahidake) takes one to two days. Or hikers may choose to begin the week-long north-south hike of the national park from this location. Visitors can find the Kurodake mountain hut below the summit (ten minute hike).
Mount Kurodake is also famous for being one of the earliest spots in Japan to see autumn colors. They can appear as early as the beginning of September around the mountain peak. However, the best time to see the colors in the upper elevations would be in the second half of September. From there, the leaves transformation slowly descends to the valley floor around mid October.
In winter, the mountain is home to the Kurodake Ski Area. This ski area is one of the first resorts with natural snow to open each year in Japan. The area consists of two courses along the chairlift and a semi-marked trail under the ropeway. This resort is a backcountry paradise with steep, deep powder and virtually no crowds. Off-piste skiing is permitted, but only for those with proper experience. Avalanche gear is highly recommended.

【Hokkaido Road Trip】Mount Asahidake Day Trip from Sapporo
Daisetsuzan (大雪山) is Hokkaido's largest national park. It preserves a mountainous area of virtually unspoiled wilderness, which is larger than some of Japan's smaller prefectures. It is a paradise for hikers, outdoor lovers, deer and brown bears, and the first place in Japan to see fall colors and snow each autumn.
