Authorized for Export from the USSR...
In searching for new forms of artistic language in the mid-1950s, Moscow's nonconformists chose Russian avant-garde and old Russian art, as well as various forms of Western modernism as the main source of inspiration, entering into an open conflict with the official art doctrine. The Culture Ministry used to put a stamp on the paintings: Authorized for export from the USSR. Now, the cultural foundation EKATERINA is putting these works on display.

STORYLINE:
It took U.S. government agents, Russian diplomats and a bishop to get this mission accomplished: The return Thursday of 34 religious icons to Russia.
It's a really important event in our relations, said Pavel Prokofiev, Russia's consul general in New York.
The painted images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and various saints were created in monasteries around St. Petersburg at least a century ago, and once graced various churches and homes in Russia.
In a ceremony at St. Nicholas Cathedral on Manhattan's East Side, U.S. Customs officials handed over the colorful collection to Bishop Mercurius, the top official of the Russian Orthodox Church in North America.
The icons were brought into the United States in 1992, through New York, without proper documentation, said Janet Rapaport, spokeswoman for the U.S. Customs Service.
The man carrying them was Marc Garrison, who once owned a bookshop in Salt Lake City, she said.
He told a Utah gallery owner that he had traded medical supplies for the icons.
Garrison said they were worth $3.2 million and he planned to sell them to benefit a non-profit organization helping needy Mormons in Russia.
The organization proved to be bogus, Rapaport said.
The icons were displayed in various Utah venues including a shopping mall, and kept for more than a year in cardboard boxes in Garrison's bedroom.
Just before the 1993 auction, Customs agents obtained search warrants for Garrison's home and the gallery, and seized the treasures.
In a civil action brought by the U.S. attorney in Utah, he agreed to forfeit the 34 icons.
Garrison now faces no charges in the case.
An icon is seen as a window to heaven, the bishop, speaking in Russian, told a news conference in the main worship area of the East 97th Street cathedral.
Looking into an icon allows the heart to open to things that cannot be seen, he said, standing by a table where the images lay, illuminated by candles.
The religious paintings have been stored for years in a U.S. Customs vault in Salt Lake City.
They will remain in New York until experts examine them, and some are restored.
Then the icons will be sent to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Today we say: Mission accomplished, said Chuck Winwood, the acting U.S. Customs commissioner.
