Naritasan Jibo Kannon - Japan Great Buddha, Kurume, Fukuoka - 久留米成田山・慈母大観音- Japan As It Truly Is
One of the largest statues in the world is the 62m Jibo Kannon Statue in Kurume, Fukuoka. It also has an Indian style temple next to it and is visible from miles away. You can also see the story of Buddha as well as a peaceful ring of statues around the area. This being Japan, there is also a Shinto shrine and a statue to the God of Wealth. You can also go into the Naritasan Jibo Kannon and look out of some windows near the top.

One Hundred Seventy-Second Episode: Wander Kurume
I had an hour and a half to kill, and it's been SOOO long since I managed to do a wander video that I HAD to take the opportunity! For some reason, even though I had less time to wander than I did when I did the Fukuoka video, I managed to make a LONGER video than the Fukuoka one!

Ninety-Eighth Episode: Kurume Cycle Family Park
I'd seen this park in a magazine years ago and then forgot about it! I don't know what sparked my memory, but we finally went to the Kurume Cycle Family Park! It's a great place to take your kids!
Or maybe even a date if you're into cycling. You can go on the double tricycle and snuggle up! :)
I found a website with an English explanation and a map if you're trying to find the place:

Kurume Fire Festival - Flames & Crazy antics
This Fire Festival is definitely Kyushu's best! It takes place every January in Daizenji Temple in Kurume City, Fukuoka prefecture here on Kyushu. It's known as the Oniyo Fire Festival and is 1600 years old. It's one of the three biggest fire festivals in Japan and is officially an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. More importantly, it's a lot of fun and great place to take photos and videos.
This video was taken at the 2019 festival. You can see huge crowds there but the whole evening I only saw two other foreigners. Like most things here in Kyushu it's a real local event, not just a tourist show.
The highlight is the lighting of the six huge torches with men climbing over them in a crazy frenzy. It's looks dangerous but I guess these guys have years of experience. I did notice some of them had bright pink heat-scorched chests! The burning ash and embers are considered symbols of good luck but I was happy to avoid them.
The torches are 13 meters long and weigh more than a ton. They are made of bamboo and take several hours to burn down (we stayed until after midnight).
This festival was a lot of fun on a freezing cold night in January.
The great thing about this festival is that its in KURUME. This city is known as the common man's eating capital of Kyushu. The ramen is claimed to be better than Hakata Ramen (shock!) and there are more yakitori (meat skewer) restaurants per person than anywhere in Japan. We can show you tight alleys packed with ramen and yakitori shops and tiny bars.
Contact us if you want to attend next year. In Japanese it's called Daizenji Tamataregu no Oniyo 大善寺玉垂宮の鬼夜
