In addition to the hot spring fields, there is a traditional way of Kusatsu where hot springs are cooled. It is a method designed to lower the water temperature while maintaining the efficacy of a good spring water. The yamomi is a method of lowering the water temperature to a bathing temperature by stirring the hot spring water with a wooden board of 180cm. It is said that lowering the temperature through the nipples has the effect of softening the water quality. This has become a public bathhouse since the Edo era, and since then, a nanny show has been created and continues to this day. I have 30 years of experience. After the performance, the audience was able to try the nanny experience, so I tried holding a wooden plate. If you have five experiences, you can get a nanny certification.

Visiting a Famous Japanese Hot Spring Town: Kusatsu
I love Japanese onsens (hot springs), and my family... well, they like them. I had heard about Kusatsu and asked my wife to see if she could book a trip out there for us. She delivered and we rented a car and drove a few hours, stopping a few places along the way, before we reached our ryokan. Not knowing that much about Kusatsu, I think the family was all pleasantly elated to find a hot spring town that was beyond our expectations. There are some places that the kids visit where they whine about walking here and there, but since everything was so close and in walking distance of the town, and because there was a lot more snow than we expected, all the family had a fantastic time... except for poor Mummy, who was coming down with a cold/fever.
Special thanks to our friends and fellow YouTubers Jess and Hai from Notes of Nomads for their photos. They also have an awesome guide about visiting Kusatsu which we used when planning our trip

2019 Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen (Hot Springs) located in the Gunma Prefecture is about 200 kilometers from Tokyo (about 124 miles). It was about 2.5 hours away from my in-law's home in Utsunomiya. We rented a car and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way.
Kusatsu is ranked as Japan's #1 hot springs and boasts that it produces the greatest amount of natural hot spring water. The Yubatake (hot water fields) are a wooden facility for thermal moderation of the water, making for a unique attractive atmosphere. It is the symbol of Kusatsu.
We had a reasonably priced steak lunch at Silver Back Grill and Beer. My 1/2 lb. steak platter with rice and curry was $16 and my wife's 1/3 lb. order was $13.
We stayed at Sakurai Hotel and had easy walking access to everything. The hotel included an amazing buffet dinner and breakfast with our stay. That evening we also enjoyed the hotel festivities that included traditional summer obon dancing and taiko drumming.
During the day we attended the Yumomi show at Netsu-no-yu which highlights a unique method of stirring the hot springs waters to cool it down. The show cost about $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Right in the middle of town is Kosenji Temple. I quickly ran up the flight of stairs and took in the view and captured some great footage.
We also went to Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland (Nettaiken). It's a small zoo that is surprisingly packed with a lot of animals. I will be highlighting that in a separate video so be on the lookout for that.
Overall, Kusatsu is a beautiful place and we loved our experience. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone and hope to be back there some day soon.

An onsen paradise bringing together famous hot springs starting with Kusatsu; it is also known for the World Heritage site of the Tomioka Silk Mill
Area Characteristics
Gunma Prefecture which is located in the northern Kanto region is rich in onsen. Numbering more than 180, the prefecture is known for its numerous famous hot springs among which are the big 4 onsen of Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami and Shima in the north followed by other major springs such as Manza and Sarugakyo. There are natural features such as the Special Natural Monument of Oze and the southern Mt. Akagi whose plains at the bottom are the 2nd-longest in the nation after those of Mt. Fuji, so it is an area that is surrounded in onsen and natural beauty. Japan’s first silk mill in the city of Tomioka was registered in 2014 as a part of the World Heritage site known as the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites. There is good access to Gunma from the capital and the prefecture is popular as an easy tourist destination for a day trip or an overnight stay.
Major Sites
Kusatsu is a popular sightseeing spot as it is one of the Top 3 Onsen in Japan boasting the largest output of natural water in the country. There are also other tourist spots such as a hot spring area where mineral deposits are harvested and a dry riverbed in the west. Along with Shima Onsen, there are also other famous springs such as Manza Onsen which is located at an altitude of 1800m and Oigami Onsen which is near Oze. The onsen can be enjoyed along with winter sports. The Kiryu Textile Memorial Hall which displays 1300-year-old Kiryu textiles deserves to be seen along with a trip to Tomioka Silk Mill. As well, other sites include Gunma Safari Park and Mt. Myogi which has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Views.
Food
Konnyaku (a jelly made from the konjac plant) is a Gunma specialty. At Konnyaku Park, you can enjoy a tour of the factory and a buffet. During the festivals, there are the ever-present yaki-manju buns at the food stalls, and the popular three big udon of Gunma: Mizuzawa Udon, Tatebayashi Udon and Kiryu Udon. As souvenirs, Gateau Rusk and Shimonita Green Onion Crackers are famous.
Transportation
Accessing Gunma through Takasaki is convenient. The city can be reached from Tokyo Station within about 50 minutes via the Joetsu Shinkansen (Bullet Train). From there, you can take a bus to reach Kusatsu and Ikaho. It is usual to drive around the area by rental car.
Accommodations
Of course, there are accommodations at the big 4 onsen as well as in the onsen areas of Shibukawa, Oigami, Manza and Sarugakyo and the highlands including Kita-Karuizawa. Also, there are many such facilities in the areas around easily accessible Takasaki and Maebashi.

Kusatsu Onsen (草津温泉) is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts and is blessed with large volumes of high quality hot spring water said to cure every illness but lovesickness.
Well known as a hot spring resort for many centuries, Kusatsu's fame was further boasted by German doctor Erwin von Baelz, who served at the imperial court in the late 1800s and recommended Kusatsu for its water's health benefits.
Kusatsu is situated at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, and offers skiing in winter and hiking during the rest of the year to be enjoyed in combination with hot spring bathing. Kusatsu is also located along Japan's Romantic Road.
Yubatake
The Yubatake (湯畑, lit. hot water field) is the symbol of Kusatsu and one of the resort's main sources of hot spring water. In fact, with an output of 5000 liters per minute, the yubatake ranks among Japan's single most productive hot spring sources.
After bubbling to the surface at a temperature of more than 70 degrees Celsius and with a pleasant sulfur odor, the hot spring water is cooled down in the yubatake's wooden conduits by a few degrees before it gets distributed to the various ryokan and public baths.
Many ryokan and shops are clustered around the yubatake and there is a steady stream of visitors, many of whom wear yukata and geta (traditional sandals) in the evening when the yubatake is lit up. There is also a foot bath (ashiyu), that can be used for free.
Sainokawara Park
Sainokawara Park (西の河原公園, Sainokawara Kōen) covers a valley not far from Kusatsu town center, where several hot spring sources and a large outdoor bath are located. Walking trails around the upper part of the park lead through the nice natural landscapes.
Hot spring water can be seen bubbling to the surface here and there, collecting into hot water pools and running down the valley in warm streams before joining the central mountain stream. There is also a small waterfall fed by hot water.
The park's other main attraction is the Sainokawara Rotemburo, consisting of two large, gender separated outdoor hot spring pools with a capacity of 100 bathers each.
Yumomi
Yumomi (湯もみ) is the centuries-old method employed to cool down Kusatsu's hot spring water to bathing temperature without diluting it with cold water and thus attenuating its special qualities.
The cooling is achieved by stirring the water using large wooden paddles and is carried out by a troupe of locals who incorporate traditional folk songs and dance into the process. Yumomi performances are held daily in the Netsunoyu building, which stands adjacent to the yubatake. They last around half an hour and afford some audience members the opportunity to partake in the stirring.

Traditional Japanese Hot Spring - Kusatsu Onsen Tour - Japan Holiday Vlog
Kusatsu Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, northwest of Tokyo. It is a popular tourist destination.
The source of its hot water is nearby Mount Kusatsu-Shirane.
The springs were a well known resort for centuries but they became one of the best known of such locations after the water there was recommended for its health benefits by Erwin von Baelz a German doctor who taught medicine at Tokyo University.
The locals claim the hot springs can cure all forms of ailments except love sickness. Guests have claimed that pain disappears while soaking in its hot water.
Kusatsu, a town in Japan’s Kantō region, is known for its hot-spring resorts. At its center is the spring’s source, Yubatake, with its gushing, steaming waters. Nearby is the traditional Goza no Yu bathhouse. In the west, Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane is an active volcano whose summit is home to the acidic green waters of Yugama lake. To the southwest is Kazawa Yunomaru Plateau, with its sprawling, seasonal azalea fields.
