FUKUOKA (Japan) in One Day #2 (of 2): Kushida Shrine & Canal City Hakata
After a very long Pacific Ocean crossing from Brazil to Japan on the Ocean Dream cruise ship that Pullmantur was delivering to Peace Boat at the Hakata port, we finally have a few hours to enjoy the city of Fukuoka!
Unfortunately just a few hours is not enough but we still visited the Kushida Shrine, a very beautiful Buddhist temple, and the Canal City shopping centre, that has a nice fountain show, all after a quick city tour by car.
On the way back from Japan to Brazil, I also had the change to do a stopover in Hong-Kong, so please subscribe to watch the next ONE DAY IN... series, which will be in Hong-Kong!
More about Fukuoka:
Fukuoka (福岡市 Fukuoka-shi) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyushu in Japan.
Ranked as the 14th of the world's most livable cities in the magazine Monocle in 2010, Fukuoka was praised for its green spaces in a metropolitan setting. It is the most populous city in Kyushu, followed by Kitakyushu. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972 by government ordinance. Greater Fukuoka (福岡都市圏), with 2.5 million people (2005 census), is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka-Kitakyushu zone, as well as Northern Kyushu.
As of June 2011, Fukuoka is Japan's 7th largest city, having passed the population of Kyoto, and the first time a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population since Kyoto was established in the 7th century. However, in ancient times, the area near Fukuoka was thought to be perhaps even more influential than the Yamato region.

Let's Take a Trip to Kushida Shrine(櫛田神社)
Kushida Shrine is the grand tutelary shrine of Hakata, meaning its deity is the protector of the city. The Shrine was built in 757 in honor of the gods of Ohatanushi-no-mikoto, Amaterasu-omikami, and Susanowo-no-mikoto. Emperor Koken ordered the shrine’s construction with the intention of sharing a god with the Kushida Shrine in Ise Province, modern day Mie Prefecture. The grounds have a symbolic gingko tree said to be over 1000 years old, the oldest tree in Hakata area, and the shrine also contains two tablets in memory of the Mongolian invasion. The shrine’s grounds has a popular “lifting stone” where many sumo wrestlers have come to test their strength. You might also encounter a fountain sculpture of a little boy dressed in festival clothing taking a pee. Of course there is, why not?
There are many festivals held at Kushida Shrine that attracts millions of visitors each year. Its most popular is the Hakata Gion Yamakasa that takes place in the summertime between July 1st and 15th. During this festival, men carrying extremely large and extravagant 1-ton floats called yamakasa race through the streets with dedication, focus, and determination. It is said that the festival originated in an attempt to secure protection from a plague toward the mid-thirteenth century. One of the massive floats is stored on the shrine’s grounds and is available for observation and pictures.
On the day this footage was taken it was Hakata Okunchi. This traditional festival, with 1,200 years of history, gives thanks to the gods for Autumn’s harvest. An ox-drawn carriage seen at the end of the video pulls an ornate mikoshi (divine palanquin/ portable shrine), while children in traditional kimono, tachi-eboshi (brimless headgear worn by court nobles) and tengan (crown) walk in a parade, starting at Kushida Shrine and weaving around the Hakata area.

Fukuoka - Canal City and Kushida Shrine
Day 12 and 13 - Canal City
We arrived in Fukuoka later than expected due to a delay in departing New Chitose Airport due to the weather, so by the time we arrived it was already night time. We decided to go to Canal City for dinner, and explored the shops shortly after. However it was very close to closing time, so we returned the next night to have a longer look.
We also stopped by Kushida Shrine on the second night on the way back to our accommodation (Fukuoka Riverside Hostel).

KUSHIDA SHRINE, HAKATA ,JAPAN, IMAGES
One of Fukuoka’s best-known shrines is Kushida, founded in 757. It is situated in the heart of ancient Hakata with a huge gingko tree, said to be 1,000 years old, shading its forecourt. The shrine honours the grand deity, OhataNushina-mikoto, and was built during the Heian Period for the common people. Today it is very much enjoyed by locals and visitors alike during the summer’s major event, the Hakata GionYamakasa Festival . On the last day of the festival the Kushida Shrine becomes the starting point for the Oiyama fun run when hundreds of young men clad only in loin cloths carry heavy wooden shrines through the streets along a set route, vying to clock the fastest times. The shrine itself contains several items of interest, particularly the Eto Arrow plate bearing carvings of the Chinese zodiac and a brace of anchor stones, recovered from the harbour, that were once attached to ships of the Mongolian invasion fleets.
