노보리베쓰는 아이누어로 “색이 진한 강”이란 뜻인데, 이곳은 온천백화점이라 불릴만큼 다양한 종류의 온천수가 나온다. 온천의 성분과 수질이 좋아 언제나 관광객들로 북적이는 온천의 도시다. 에도시대부터 전해오는 노보리베쓰의 상징 도깨비상! 이 도깨비상을 지나야 지옥계곡을 갈수가 있다. 지옥계곡은 20만 년 전 쿳타라 화산이 불을 뿜어 만든 분화구의 흔적이라고 한다. 직경이 450미터나 되는 거대한 지옥계곡은 거품이 일고 부글거리며 끓어오르는 풍경이 마치 지옥 같다고 해서 붙여진 이름이라 한다. 계곡에 들어서자 후끈한 열기와 유황냄새가 진동했다. 바람따라 변화무쌍 하게 움직이는 수증기를 보면서 여기가 바로 지옥계곡임을 실감했다. 지옥계곡에서 나오는 온천물은 다양하다고 한다. 청색, 노란색, 색깔마다 성분이 다르다고 하는데 자세히 보니 정말 달라 보였다. 지옥계곡은 1분에 3000리터의 온천수가 나오는데, 이 물이 바로 노보리베쓰 온천의 원천이 된다. 이렇게 풍부한 온천물은 많은 사람을 불러 들였다. 탐방로 제일 끝 지점엔 간헐천이 있었는데, 3분마다 한 번씩 온천수가 나온다고 한다. 동전을 넣으면 검게 변하는데 유황성분 때문이란다. 나는 기다려 보기로 했다. 잠시 후 콸콸콸 물이 쏟아져 나오는 소리가 들리고, 더 진한 유황냄새도 코끝에 전해왔다. 수증기가 앞을 가렸지만 색다른 경험이었다. 지옥계곡 바로 아래에 천연족탕이 있다고 해 찾아가는 길이다. 계곡에 꽉 찬 수증기와 매콤한 냄새는 지옥계곡과 비슷한 느낌이었다. 더운 물이 흐르는 계곡! 내가 이곳에서 처음 생각한 것은 ‘물고기는 살 수 없겠지’라는 것이었다. 유치한 내 상상이 부끄러웠다. 바닥을 팔수록 더 뜨거운 기운이 느껴졌는데, 혈액순환이 잘돼서 그런지 피로가 확 풀리는 기분이 들었다.
