Минарет Кутлуг-Тимура — минарет XIV века, расположенный на севере Туркменистана, на территории древнего городища города Куня-Ургенч, где в основном проживают узбеки. Высота минарета достигает 60 метров, по другим данным — 62 метра, и является самым высоким минаретом и архитектурным памятником во всей Средней Азии. Для сравнения, высота второго по высоте минарета региона — минарета Ислам-ходжи в Хиве составляет 56,6 метров, а на третьем месте находится минарет Калян в Бухаре, высота которого составляет 46,5 метров.

More than 2,000 years ago, the great trade routes that linked Europe and China opened Central Asia to foreign cultures, customs and religions. MIR's iconic tour, Journey Through Central Asia: The Five 'Stans, is a modern-day caravan on an epic Silk Road journey to five of these exotic countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

Kazakhstan is the largest and richest of the five 'Stans. We visit the country's former capital, Almaty, known as the Capital of Apples; Zenkov Cathedral; as well as a falcon farm for an up-close look at these beautiful birds used in hunting.

Some of the most famous UNESCO-listed Silk Road sights are in Uzbekistan. We visit Osh and Rishtan in Fergana Valley; explore the country's capital, Tashkent; wander through Samarkand, known as the Crossroad of Cultures with Registan Square's blue-tiled mosaics, mosques, and madrassahs; and see Shakhrisabze, birthplace of Tamerlane the Conqueror. Bukhara was an oasis in the desert for Silk Road camel caravans long ago, and still is for modern travelers today. In Khiva, the Old Town called Ichon Qala looks much as it did centuries ago, while Nukus is known for its once-banned avant-garde Soviet art at the Savitsky Museum.

Turkmenistan is a country of tribal culture and camels as well as modern cities and transportation. We visit three UNESCO-listed sites: Khorezm's Kunya Urgench and Kutlug-Timur Minaret, Merv, and the 2,000-year-old city of Nisa. The tour ends in Turkmenistan's capital of Ashgabat, filled with white marble buildings, as well as a nearby visit to an Akhal-Teke horse-breeding farm.

Dag-4 Ashgabat - de poort
Ontbijt in het hotel. Ochtend ter vrije besteding om te uit te rusten voordat de off-road gedeelte en nog wat tijd om souvenirs te kopen. Begin van de middag reizen landinwaarts door de Kara Kum woestijn met zijn bewegende zand en schaarse vegetatie van saksaul, acacia en kandym struiken. Aangekomen bij de grens tussen de noordelijke en zuidelijke regio's van Turkmenistan we uitschakelen van de hoofdweg voor een spannende acht kilometer woestijn rijden. De rit over, vinden we onszelf een paar honderd meter afstand van het Darvaza vlammende krater , die, bij daglicht, lijkt meer van een gewone geheel in de grond lichtjes gerookt door brand.Na uitgepakt onze voertuigen, gaan we voor een wandeling rond de krater, terwijl onze chauffeurs houden zich bezig met het verzamelen van hout, het regelen van gezellig onderkomen van tenten en slaapzakken, en het verspreiden van een tafel op de grond. Tegen de tijd dat merken we de geur van een brand gekookt diner, de eenvoudige geheel van de krater verandert in wat lijkt misschien een voordeur van de hel, een brand tempel of een andere mysterieuze wijze spectaculaire plaats die een romantische verbeelding kan associëren met vuur. We eindigen de dag proeven van heerlijke nomadische eten, nadenken over de zin van het leven in de serene sfeer van mooie avondhemel en flikkerende lichtjes van de eeuwige vuur. Diner en overnachting in tenten.
Dag-5 aan de poort - Drop
Ontbijt in tenten. We pakken ons kamp en gaan naar het oosten, in de richting van het hart van de Karakum, het dorp van Damla . De weg naar Damla zal ons over de hoge zandduinen en heel hard wijzen, stoffige takyrs - vlaktes van hard gepakt klei - openbaren ons de 'naakte' bed van de prehistorische Tethys zee, die ooit bedekt enorme uitgestrektheid van Eurazië, en van de legendarische Uzboy rivier, een van de bedden van de Amu-Darya (de Oxus) die vloog dwars door de woestijn naar de Kaspische Zee. Gele duinen af en toe specked met donkere vlekken van de vegetatie, lage struiken en prachtige woestijn kerstbomen van saxaul (Lat. Haloxylon), maken de eindeloze en waterloze oceaan van zand een onvergetelijk beeld, die u zal worden herinnerend met een begeleiding van de muziek van de wind voor vele jaren te komen. Na 3 uur rijden zullen we duiken in een diep dal, de opvang van Damla (wiens naam betekent druppel water), die in de voorkant van ons bijna uit de lucht.Verloren in het zand, ver weg van de gewone reis-routes, Damla is een van de laatste verblijfplaatsen van de traditionele pastorale leven, gesteund door de veeteelt, vooral schapen, geiten en kamelen, al de woestijn vriendelijk opbrengst aan mensen. Overnachting in het nationale huis. Lunch in een yourt. Diner en overnachting in een yourt of lokale huis.
Dag-6 Drop - Dashoguz
Ontbijt. Na het afscheid van het ontbijt in het dorp rijden we noordwaarts naar Dashoguz. Een deel van onze trip van vandaag zal door de woestijn zijn, deels asfalt. Rijden van Damla naar Dashoguz. Lunchen onderweg of in Dashoguz. Overnachting in Dashoguz / Uzboy hotel .
Dag-7 Dashoguz - Shame-Urgench - Ashgabat
Ontbijt. We verrekend naar het noord-westen, in de richting van Kunya-Urgench (UNSCO World Heritage Site) - ooit een glorieuze hoofdstad van het middeleeuwse Khorezmshah Rijk, het grootste islamitische rijk van de late jaren 12 - begin 13 eeuw. On arrival we set off north-west, towards Kunya-Urgench (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – once a glorious capital of the medieval Khorezmshah Empire, the biggest Muslim empire of the late 12 - early 13 centuries. On arrival in Kunya-Urgench we will have a chance to take a close look at outstanding monuments of the medieval Khorezm. We will visit the 14 century mausoleum of Turabek Hanum, one of the best living examples of the architecture of its period; minaret of Kutlug Timur, a former highest minaret of Central Asia that used to form a part of the main cathedral mosque of the city; mausoleum of Sultan Tekesh, a beautiful 12 century mausoleum with one of the earliest portals of the east and a unique cone of a dome; Kyrk-Mollah mound, the fabled al-Mamun’s Academy of Sciences; and mausoleum of Il-Arslan, a tiny precursor of unique Khorezmian mausoleums with a pyramidal cone as its dome. Having finished sightseeing, we return to Dashoguz for flight back to Ashgabat. Overnight at the hotel Grand Turkmen/Ak Altyn/Ashgabat.
Day 6 Ashgabat – Turkmenbashi (B)
Today we will visit a few more interesting sites in Ashgabat. We will start with a visit to the fortress of Old Nisa (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the earliest of Parthian Empire capitals. After sightseeing at Old Nisa we proceed to Kipchak village to visit a complex of the biggest mosque in Turkmenistan and the family mausoleum of the first President. Then we return to Ashgabat, to visit Fine Arts Museum, exhibiting some extraordinary paintings. If time permits, we will take a ride on cable-car, for a breath-taking view on the white-marble Ashgabat and picturesque foothills below, within the Kopetdag nature. Evening transfer to the airport for flight to Turkmenbashi (60 minutes by Boeing-717). On arrival in Turkmenbashi, transfer to hotel Kerwen/Yelken/Kuvvat/Serdar/Charlak/Turkmenbashi for overnight.
Day 7 Turkmenbashi – Ashgabat (B)
Free time at leisure. If willing, guests can chose to take 1 hour cruise along the city shoreline on a boat (at least 10 persons), visit Local Lore Museum or city market or just walk through the city. Evening transfer to the airport for flight to Ashgabat (60 minutes by Boeing-717). On arrival in Ashgabat, transfer to hotel. Overnight at the hotel Grand Turkmen/Ak Altyn/Ashgabat.

Day-4 Ashgabat – Darvaza (B, D-picnic)
Breakfast at hotel. Morning free at leisure to rest before the off-road part and have some time to purchase souvenirs. Early afternoon travel inland through the Kara Kum desert with its moving sands and sparse vegetation of saksaul, acacia and kandym bushes. Arriving at the border between the northern and southern regions of Turkmenistan we turn off the main road for an exciting eight-kilometre desert drive. The drive over, we find ourselves a couple of hundred metres away from the Darvaza flaming crater, which, at daylight, seems more of an ordinary whole in the ground slightly smoked by fire. Having unpacked our vehicles, we go for a walk around the crater, while our drivers occupy themselves with gathering wood, arranging cosy accommodations of tents and sleeping bags, and spreading a “table” on the ground. By the time we notice the smell of a fire-cooked dinner, the simple whole of the crater turns into what may seem a front door of hell, a fire temple or any other mysteriously spectacular place that a romantic’s imagination may associate with fire. We finish the day tasting delicious nomadic food, pondering over the meaning of life in the serene atmosphere of beautiful evening sky and flickering lights of the “eternal” fire. Dinner & overnight in tents.
Day-5 Darvaza – Damla (B-picnic, L-picnic, D-picnic)
Breakfast in tents. We pack up our camp and head east, towards the very heart of the Karakum desert, the village of Damla. The road to Damla will take us over high sand dunes and across hard, dusty takyrs – plains of hard packed clay – revealing us the “naked” bed of the prehistoric Tethys sea, which once covered huge expanses of Eurasia, and of the fabled Uzboy River, one of the beds of the Amu-Darya (the Oxus) that flew across the desert into the Caspian Sea. Yellow dunes occasionally specked with dark spots of vegetation, low bushes and beautiful desert “Christmas trees” of saxaul (Lat. haloxylon), make the endless and waterless ocean of sand an unforgettable picture, which you will be recalling with an accompaniment of the music of the wind for many years to come. After 3 hours’ drive we will dive into a deep valley, accommodating Damla (whose name means “droplet of water”), appearing in front of us almost out of the blue. Lost in the sands, far away from ordinary travel-routes, Damla is one of the last abodes of the traditional pastoral life, sustained by cattle-breeding, mostly sheep, goats and camels, all the desert “kindly” yields to people. Overnight at national house. Lunch in a yourt. Dinner and overnight in a yourt or local house.
Day-6 Damla – Dashoguz (B-picnic, L-picnic)
Breakfast. After farewell breakfast in the village we drive northwards to Dashoguz. A part of our today’s trip will be across the desert, partly asphalt. Drive from Damla to Dashoguz. Lunch en route or in Dashoguz. Overnight at Dashoguz/Uzboy hotel.

Breakfast. Na wat rust start rondleiding door de stad langs het nieuwe gedeelte van Tashkent: Independence Square, Amir Temur Standbeeld, gedenkteken voor de slachtoffers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, Monument van Courage, State Museum voor Toegepaste Kunsten, Alisher Navoi Theaterplein.

Aankomst Maria en aandrijving voor een excursie naar het oude Merv (UNESCO Werelderfgoed Sight) in de richting van Bayram-Ali (25 km). Bezoek aan de VI-IX cc. AD forten van de Grote en Kleine Kyz-Kalas; Mausolea van Sultan Sandjar en Mohammed ibn-Zeyd (XII c.).
Rijden terug naar Mary en bezoek aan het Regionaal Historisch Museum.

Dag 4 Mary / Margush - Ashgabat

In de ochtend gaan we op weg naar het noord-oosten, in de richting van Gonur Depe , die vroeger de hoofdstad van het legendarische Margush land was. Na twee uur rijden door de velden en dorpen en nog een uur door de woestijn, komen we tot een belangrijke archeologische site, het centrum van een opmerkelijke Bronstijd beschaving, ontdekt in 1972 en continu verkend tot 2012 door prof Victor Sarianidi. Gonur Depe, zoals de professor beschreef, is een paleis complex van 10 ha, vertegenwoordigd door deels opgegraven aarden muren van de voormalige administratieve gebouwen en religieuze structuren van de Zoroastrische type. Na ongeveer twee uur van sightseeing, zullen we een picknick lunch, brooddozen dat we met ons gebracht van de stad hebben, en dan terug naar Mary. Bij aankomst in Mary, vliegen we terug naar Ashgabat (40 minuten met de Boeing-717), van een nieuw gebouwde luchthaven van Maria. Bij aankomst in Ashgabat, transfer naar hotel Grand Turkmen / Ak Altyn / Ashgabat voor overnachting.
Dag 5 Ashgabat - Dashoguz - Ashgabat
Vroeg in de ochtend transfer naar de luchthaven voor de vlucht naar Dashoguz (50 minuten met de Boeing-717).Bij aankomst gingen we op weg noord-westen, in de richting van Kunya-Urgench (UNESCO World Heritage Site) - ooit een glorieuze hoofdstad van het middeleeuwse Khorezmshah Rijk, het grootste islamitische rijk van de late jaren 12 - begin 13 eeuw. Bij aankomst in Kunya-Urgench zullen we een kans om een korte blik op opmerkelijke monumenten van de middeleeuwse Khorezm nemen. We zullen het 14-eeuwse mausoleum van Turabek Hanum, een van de beste levende voorbeelden van de architectuur van de periode te bezoeken; minaret van Kutlug Timur, een voormalig hoogste minaret van Centraal-Azië, dat wordt gebruikt om een deel van de belangrijkste kathedraal moskee van de stad vormen; mausoleum van Sultan Tekesh, een prachtige 12-eeuwse mausoleum met een van de vroegste portalen van het oosten en een unieke kegel van een koepel; Kyrk-Mollah heuvel, de legendarische al-Mamoen's Academie van Wetenschappen; en het mausoleum van Il-Arslan, een kleine voorloper van unieke Khorezmian mausolea met een piramidale conus als zijn koepel. Het afronden van sightseeing, keren we terug naar Dashoguz voor de vlucht terug naar Ashgabat. Overnachting in het hotel Grand Turkmen / Ak Altyn / Ashgabat.
Dag 6 Ashgabat - Turkmenbashi (B)
Vandaag bezoeken we nog een paar interessante locaties in Ashgabat. We beginnen met een bezoek aan het fort van Oude Nisa (UNESCO World Heritage Site), de vroegste van Parthische Rijk hoofdsteden. Na het bezoeken van bezienswaardigheden op Old Nisa gaan we verder met Kipchak dorp om een complex van de grootste moskee in Turkmenistan en de familie mausoleum van de eerste president te bezoeken. Daarna keren we terug naar Ashgabat, voor een bezoek aan het Museum voor Schone Kunsten, het tentoonstellen van een aantal bijzondere schilderijen. Als de tijd het toelaat, zullen we een ritje op de kabelbaan, voor een adembenemend uitzicht op de witte marmeren Ashgabat en schilderachtige uitlopers hieronder, binnen de Kopetdag natuur te nemen. 'S Avonds transfer naar de luchthaven voor de vlucht naar Turkmenbashi (60 minuten met de Boeing-717). Bij aankomst in Turkmenbashi, transfer naar hotel Kerwen / Yelken / Kuvvat / Serdar / Charlak / Turkmenbashi voor overnachting.
Dag 7 Turkmenbashi - Ashgabat (B)
Vrije tijd te besteden. Als ze dat wilden, kunt u ervoor gekozen om 1 uur durende rondvaart langs de stad kustlijn op een boot (minimaal 10 personen) te nemen, te bezoeken Local Lore Museum of stad markt of gewoon wandelen door de stad. 'S Avonds transfer naar de luchthaven voor de vlucht naar Ashgabat (60 minuten met de Boeing-717). Bij aankomst in Ashgabat, transfer naar hotel. Overnachting in het hotel Grand Turkmen / Ak Altyn / Ashgabat.
Dag 8 Vertrek
Vroeg in de ochtend transfer naar de luchthaven voor vertrek naar huis. Zie af.
