The Isle of Pines—Île des Pins in French, or Kunié to New Caledonia's indigenous Melanesian people—is located 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Grande Terre, the main island of the archipelago that makes up New Caledonia. With less than 2,000 inhabitants spread across its 152-square-kilometer (59-square-mile) size, Île des Pins brims with enough natural beauty to have earned it the nickname “l'île la plus proche du paradis” (the island closest to paradise). Its principal draws are its beaches, especially those around the bays of Kuto and Kanumera, where one can swim with colorful tropical fish, while the island’s name, bestowed upon it by the English captain James Cook, refers to its abundant soaring pine trees, which can reach up to 60 meters (197 feet) in height. The official administrative area (and only village) is Vao in the south, but the port of Kuto serves as the island’s chief gateway and offers accommodation, restaurants, shops and more. Isle of Pines was a penal colony for some 3,000 political prisoners from Paris in the 1870s, and traces of that history are visible in the shape of overgrown prison ruins.

Visiting the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia during our cruise on Carnival Spirit in December 2019.
The ship anchored in Kuto Bay and a tender brought us to the pier.
After a quick look at the bay we boarded a mini-bus to Le Meridien Ile des Pins located in picturesque Oro Bay on the other side of the island.

With Rosemarie and Jacques Apikaoua at the Three Banians, North Kuto (conveniently situated between the northern end of Kuto beach and the bakery).
4 Bedrooms (for 1 to 4 persons), a thatched hut with a separation in the middle for 2 couples or 4 persons, & 1 big thatched Hut (beds for 7 pers.) Separate toilet and hot shower facilities.
One other small thatched hut for a couple and a child has toilet, wash-basin and cold shower facilities inside.

Petit séjour à l'Ile des Pins pour 3 jours / 2 nuits
Nous avons séjournés 2 nuits à l'hôtel Kodjeue avec le pack plongée.
Puis le Camping Atchu pour notre 3eme nuit sur l’île : prix beaucoup plus abordable. Il font également restaurant et la cuisine est excellente.
- Plongée : Incroyables plongées où nous avons eu la chance de voir des requins, des hippocampes pygmés, des serpents olives...
De plus, le moniteur Pierre Emmanuelle est vraiment très sympa.
- Visite du Pic Nga, petite ascension de 30 mn pour avoir une vue imprenable sur l'île des Pins, vraiment magnifique. N'oubliez pas de faire la donation à l'entrée pour la tribu qui possède cette terre.
- La Baie d'Oro et sa piscine naturelle, on a jamais vu quelque chose d’aussi beau !
C'est un coin de paradis accessible par la mer (en pirogue) ou par la terre.
- Grotte de la reine Hortense : Un peu deçu car on ne peut que visiter l'entrée, on a pas l'autorisation de la tribu pour y pénétrer c'est bien dommage.
- Visite de la ville de Vao / Kuto à pied et en stop. Le stop fonctionne très bien sur cette île

Beautiful soft, fine powder white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons are on this sleepy island. Known as the Jewel of the Pacific ...it was named by Capt James Cook in 1774. We walked to Kanumera Bay to swim and others snorkeled. The locals speak French here.
