Hey Bantu,
We went to the kzn botanical garden in pietermaritzburg, at first I was amazed by the entrance then was left feeling a bit meh???? once we walked through it. I guess the entrance hypes you up so much that you expect the rest of the garden to look like that.
The rest of the garden is beautiful and very peaceful, if it wasn't so far away I'd go read a book there while overlooking the ponds and ducks it had to offer. The old mahogany trees will leave you feeling like your in a fairytale and the birds chirping add to the magic.
I'd suggest you go in spring when the plants will be more vibrant and colorful, right now they were a bit dry and dull.
Entrance fee was R25. 00 which is a standard price.

SUNDAY TRIBUNE GARDEN & LEISURE SHOW
South Africa, gem of Africa, home to some of the most spectacular plants in the world, invites you to visit yet another of our horticultural marvels.
Nestled in the foothills of the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, only forty-five minutes from Durban, the City of Pietermaritzburg sets the scene for South Africa’s largest horticultural show. Garden Shows the world over encourage and enthuse gardeners. The show, hosted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal and sponsored by the Sunday Tribune newspaper is no different.
1976 saw the first garden show in Pietermaritzburg and today, the show is a green event of national consequence, attracting in excess of 20 000 visitors during its three-day period.
Often referred to as South Africa’s Chelsea, gardening and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country, and increasingly from abroad, converge on the show to enjoy the latest in landscaping trends and new plant releases.
Most popular of all are the feature gardens designed and created by some of South Africa’s top garden designers. These gardens, largely sponsored by commercial and horticultural companies, offer unrivalled exposure to exhibitors and designers alike. Also included are a number of displays by various municipal and city parks departments. The keynote exhibits reflect not only the diversity of our plant material, but the ingenuity of our designers.
The CEO of the Royal Agricultural Society, Terry Strachan, explains the show is run by horticulture for horticulture. It does not have the commercial element and profit motive that pervades the exhibition industry worldwide today. This is very much an in-house endeavour by the industry for the industry which gives this particular show its very special flavour.
Adding to this flavour, the show caters for horticultural clubs and societies, giving a window of opportunity to showcase their gardening talents.
Exotic floral displays are a special highlight and bring together floral societies from around South Africa and the globe. Ideas abound, creating and inspiring visitors.
Most exciting for gardeners are the many specialised nurseries and garden centres allowing an opportunity to purchase rare plants not normally available.
One doesn’t want to sound brash, but judging from the standard that I have been privileged to see in recent years, I am of the opinion that the standard that we have here today is on a par with the very best in the world. I don’t believe it could be bettered; it could most certainly be matched, but bettered – no.
Combining a love of gardening, the outdoors and an ideal opportunity to market your business, the Sunday Tribune Garden & Leisure Show is undoubtedly one of Africa’s leading exhibitions.

Pietermaritzburg Tatham Art Gallery flooded
The basement of the Pietermaritzburg Tatham Art Gallery flooded this morning leaving around 400 artworks damaged. Although it has not yet been confirmed, gallery employees believe the two-day power outage caused a malfunction on one of the water pumps running below the gallery causing it to burst.
