I chose wisely when it came to my guest house in Mawlamyine, because it turns out it was located just a short distance away from the well-known Kyaikthanlan Pagoda - made famous by Rudyard Kipling.
I ended up going to the pagoda twice in one day, and I broke my usual habit of not seeking out sunsets. The view of the city and the river and the islands was so impressive that I felt I had to return for when the sun dropped down below the horizon.

This Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda is the symbol of Mawlamyine. The scenery is great from this pagoda. Especially, the sunset is really beautiful, and the sunset is from 5 pm to 5:30pm.

HPA AN & MAWLAMYINE, MYANMAR, INCREDIBLE BEAUTY
Hpa An & Mawlamyine are two of the most incredible destinations in all of Myanmar, but many travellers overlook these in their rush to reach Yangon, Bagan & Inle Lake.
Hpa An, being a dramatic karst region with limestone mountains, is all about caves and cave temples; many possess enormous caverns and extend for kilometres in length.The famous Kyauk Kalat is also found near Hpa An. Kyauk Kalat is a spectacle to behold; a stupa perches atop a wine-glass shaped pinnacle of limestone rock, the rock itself situated in the centre of a man-made reservoir. It's also possible to climb Mount Zwegabin (725m), an imposing mountain lying a few kilometres from Hpa -An and you can sleep in the monastery atop the mountain if you decide to tackle this. Lumbini Park, at the foot of Mt.Zwegabin is an incredible place, rows of literally thousands of buddha statues on pedestals dominate this giant grassy field and they even extend into the forested areas along the margins.

Mawlamyine is a lazy town located at the mouth of the Thanlwyin River. It's the main trading centre and seaport in south eastern Burma. Rudyard Kipling visited Mawlamyine for three days where he fell in love with a Burmese girl at the foot of one of the pagodas. The sunsets over the Thanlywin river are claimed by local people to be the best sunsets in all of Southeast Asia.
Mawlamyine boasts a string of beautiful pagodas, which sit along an inland ridge. From up here on the ridge, the sunset views of Mawlamyine & the Thanlwyin River are spectacular. The Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda pagoda up on the ridge is dazzlingly beautiful and the most impressive of the lot.
There are a few interesting old crumbling colonial buildings to check out in Mawlamyine and you can also make trips out to a number of river islands such as the enormous Bilu Kyun (Ogre Island) or the diminutive 'Shampoo Island'. These islands have interesting local handicrafts like woodcarvings, coconut mats, bamboo hats etc.

There are also some interesting sights around Mawlamyine.About 24km south of Mawlamyine, near the town of Mudon, there is a cluster of 3 interesting attractions. There are two large limestone rocks by the roadside, one is called Kyauktalon Taung and is topped by stupas and other slightly smaller rock on the opposite side of the road is topped by a hindu temple. Very close to here in Yadana Taung, where you'll find Win Sein Taw Ya, possibly the world's largest reclining buddha statue. This concrete monstrosity is 30m high and 180m in length and it will probably blow your mind.

Sunset from Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda in Mawlamyine, Myanmar
18 April 2016 - Located above a hill overlooking the city of Mawlamyine, Myanmar is the Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda, the most reknown of a number of temples and other religious structures on that hill. It's a great place to visit during sunset - hypnotic prayers sound as you get a perfect view of the sun disappearing over the Thanlwin River and a panoramic view of the city that for me seems more like a big, tropical village.

18 April 2016 - About 12 miles north of Mawlamyine is the Nwa La Bo Pagoda, consisting of three golden boulders perched atop one another and topped by a stupa. The ride on the pickup truck up the mountain to/from the pagoda was perhaps even more memorable than the sight of the golden pagoda itself. Seated on one of the back benches, the ride was bumpy, cramped, uncomfortable, and I was constantly struggling to find my balance - but the discomfort was offset by the beauty of the natural surroundings around the single lane road and the beautiful lush landscape down below. After all, it's about the journey too, and not just the destination, right?

Shwe Nat Taung Pagoda is a small pagoda, temple, but this view of sunset is so beautiful. If you have a time, I recommend you to go to. It takes a time for 20 mins from Mawlamyine city.
There are some good view points near this pagoda. Pa-Auk Forest Meditation Center, Win Sein Taw Ya, Reclining Big Buddha, Sitting Big Buddha.

Walking in Mawlamyine ( Myanmar)
Mawlamyine is the fourth largest city in Myanmar situated 180 kilometers east of the nation's capital across the Gulf of Mottama at the mouth of the Thanlwin river. It is the capital of Mon State with a population of about 400,000 people. Formerly known as Moulmein, it was once a major port and the administrative capital of British Lower Burma. The town's signature landmark is Kyaikthanlan pagoda built in 875 AD and thought to be the site from where Rudyard Kipling wrote his famous poem, 'The Road to Mandalay'.
The Thanlwin bridge, the longest road and rail bridge in Myanmar is the most prominent landmark in the area. It stretches a distance of 11,000 feet over the Thanlwin river connecting the country's south eastern region with its capital, Yangon.
Thingyan 2016 - Burmese New Year Water Festival - Day 4 in Mawlamyine, Myanmar
16 April 2016 - After a long train ride from Yangon, I've arrived in the city of Mawlamyine in the southeast of Myanmar, where the celebrations for Thingyan, or the Burmese New Year, continue! From the train station, I took a motorbike taxi to my hotel and got soaked from water hoses and buckets along the ride - that in itself was an adventure! I was done for the day as far as getting wet was concerned, but luckily the hotel where I stayed at had a balcony overlooking the Thanlwin River - a perfect spot to watch the celebrations continue, and join the crowds from a safe distance. And the bonus - it was sunset :)

Today was another day for pleasant distractions. My goal was to visit the well-known Mahamuni Pagoda in Mawlamyine. It has the reputation of being the largest and most beautiful pagoda in the city, and it houses one of the most sacred Buddha images in Myanmar.
However, I first had to get from my guest house to the pagoda, and my walk took me to several docks, through the busy central market, past the Mawlamyine prison, into a cafe for a cold drink, and even to a thanaka shop.

World's largest reclining Buddha, Win Sein Taw Ya, Myanmar
19 April 2016 - About 24-km south of Mawlamyine, near Mudon, is this 180-metre long reclining Buddha, the largest of its kind in the world. Interestingly, one can go inside the monument where depictions of the Buddha's life and teachings are shown. This is part of a larger complex with more statues, temples, pagodas, and shrines.
