Golden Rock, Myanmar in 4K (Ultra HD)
The Golden Rock is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Myanmar. The huge bolder, covered with golden leaf, is balancing on the edge of a rock since antiquity. Small pagoda (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda - 7 meters/24 ft) is built on top of the boulder. The site is at elevation of 1,100 metres / 3,600 ft.
In the video: views of the rock and the Buddhist pilgrims at sunrise, sunset and after dark.

Myanmar's MOST DANGEROUS Pagoda?! | How To Get to GOLDEN ROCK (Is It Worth It?)
The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda aka the Golden Rock is Myanmar’s most surreal landmark. A giant bolder resting on a steep cliff edge - seemingly defying the laws of gravity! We visited during Thadingyut Festival (the Myanmar Festival of Lights) where thousands of candles are lit underneath the pagoda - a truly UNMISSABLE experience!
Although it’s an important buddhist pilgrimage, the pagoda isn’t often visited by foreign tourists. So how do you get to Golden Rock from Yangon? And is it really worth it? In this travel guide, we give a foreigner's first impressions of Kyaiktiyo and the Thadingyut festival itself.

Golden Rock Pagoda - 1 Day DIY Adventure From Yangon to Kyaiktiyo
Not many people go to Myanmar in the first place, so there is very little information online about travelling in the country outside of its most famous places. That means even fewer people make the journey from Yangon to the sacred Buddhist site of Kyaiktiyo more than 200km away. When I was planning for this trip it was near impossible to find any detailed information online, especially about doing it yourself without joining a tour. But I enjoy the challenge of going off the beaten path so I took a risk and did it anyway, and lucky for me everything worked out just right! So in this video not only will I show you the magnificence of Kyaiktiyo, but I will also share the itinerary I followed and some tips and tricks I picked up along the way so you guys can make your own journey there
But first, you might be wondering why I would even bother to go so far, so let’s talk about what Kyaiktiyo is first! Also known as the Golden Rock Pagoda, Kyaiktiyo is both the mountain and the pagoda at the top, and both parts are great. The mountain can only be accessed from the village of Kinpun, where pilgrims from all over Myanmar board what is essentially a pickup truck that will take you up the winding roads of Mt. Kyaikityo at blazing speeds. Seriously, people are known to vomit on this ride so if you’re prone to motion sickness make sure you prepare in advance, but if you get a “window” seat it makes an exhilarating ride with all the twist and turns! Then at the very top sits the Golden Rock Pagoda, which is basically a giant golden rock with a small pagoda on top, perched precariously at the edge of a cliff, seemingly defying gravity. While it looks like it’s about to topple over at any moment it’s actually naturally and securely held in place, but according to legend it is a strand Buddha’s hair that is holding the rock in place. This is why Kyaiktiyo is considered the third most sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar, after Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay. Its golden colour comes from hundreds of years of golden leaves pasted on by male pilgrims, a common type of Buddhist offering in Myanmar. Unfortunately, the inner cliff where the rock rests is off-limits to women, as the rock represents the head of Buddhist monks who are sworn under chastity.
Most people visit Kyaiktiyo as a two day trip given its remote location, but I managed to do it in a day trip and this is the itinerary you can follow, you can probably be even more efficient than this since I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what’s going on!
• 3:50 am – wake up (yes I know this absolutely sucks)
• 4:00 am – picked up by my taxi driver (arrange this in advance, don’t count on taxis to be around the streets at 4 am in the morning!)
• 4:45 am – arrive at Aung Mingalar Bus Station. This is the long distance bus terminal in Yangon, it’s pretty big and confusing so ask your taxi driver to drop you off at the Win Express terminal, which runs direct buses to Kinpun
• 5:30 am – first Win Express bus to Kinpun leaves, you book tickets online at starticket.com.mm
• 9:00 am – arrive in Kinpun village, buy a return ticket right away at the bus stop (runs regularly between 2pm and 5pm), get some breakfast and head to the pickup truck terminal located behind the KFC and line up (yes there’s a KFC in this village!)
• 9:45 am – get in the pickup truck, go for the “window” seat for best views!
• 10:30 am – arrive at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo, there’s a bit more uphill to go
• 11:00 am – arrive at the Golden Rock Pagoda, I think 2 hours is enough at the top
• 1:00 pm – take the pickup truck back down in time for 2 pm bus back to Yangon
• 7:30 pm – arrive back in Yangon, the return journey takes longer as there is traffic and it includes a stop for dinner
Locations visited:
Aung Mingalar Bus Station –
Kinpun Truck Station –
Kyaiktiyo –

The miracle of Myanmar, Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda, Mon State in 4K ကျိုက်ထီးရိုးဘုရား မွန်ပြည်နယ်
Mount Kyaiktiyo (Kyite Htee Yoe), famous for the huge golden rock perched at its summit, is one of the three most sacred religious sites in Myanmar, Pilgrims come here from far and wide to worship and add gold leaf to the rock, which seems to defy gravity by delicately balancing on the edge of the 1100-metre high mountain.
The pagoda is located near Kyaikto in Mon State in the northern part of the Tenasserim coast. The Golden Rock is situated at an elevation of 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level, on top of the Kyaik Htiee Yoe hill that is also known as Eastern Yoma mountain and it is on the Paung-laung ridge of the Eastern Yoma mountain. It is at a distance of 210 kilometres (130 mi) from Yangon.
The Kinpun village 16 km (10 mi) is at the base of Mt. Kyaik Htee Yoe, which has a lively atmosphere and a good range of places to eat. If you are staying in Kinpun, it makes the most sense to arrive in the late afternoon or evening, and then ascend the mountain the following morning.
Special trucks driven by well-trained drivers can now drive you up to Mt. Yathae, from which visitors trek uphill for about 45 minutes. Porters and palanquins are available to carry luggage and pilgrims who are too old or too weak.
For many visitors, the rock (standing 7.6 metres tall) and the gilded pagoda which sits on top of it (itself 7.3 metres tall), which are said to cover a hair of the Buddha, are the main draw, but another reason to make the journey is the panoramic 360 degree views of the surrounding Mon State mountains from the summit.
You may also take Myanmar's first cable car from Yathaetaung to the summit (K6,000 for a round trip ticket). The operating hours of the bus and cable car are 5am to 6pm.
Women are not allowed into the inner sanctuary of the rocks vicinity, maintained by an employed security guard who watches over the gated entrance. Women are permitted in the outer balcony and the lower courtyard of the rock.
The Golden Rock is the main attraction for the pilgrims who offer prayers and also stick golden leaves on the rock in reverence. The main square close to the golden rock has many establishments that deal in religious paraphernalia for worship and offerings made by the pilgrims. Adjoining the plaza area is the Potemkin village where restaurants, gift shops, and guest houses are located. A new terrace has been built at a lower level from which visitors can get a good view of the rock and the pagoda.
At the peak of the pilgrimage season, from November to March, an atmosphere of devotion is witnessed at Kyaik Htiee Yoe pagoda.
The Full Moon day of Tabaung in March is a special occasion for pilgrims who visit the shrine. On this day, the platform of the pagoda is lighted with ninety thousand candles as a reverential offering to the Lord Buddha. The devotees who visit the pagoda also offer fruits, food and incense to the Buddha.

Myanmar (Burma) - Bago to the Golden Rock Pagoda
Coach trips have never been my favourite form of travel but this one was different. Accompanied by my wife and son and a whole contingent of Thai family and friends we flew to Yangon in Myanmar (Burma) for a 2 night adventure.
It was amazing what we were able to see and do in such a short space of time. We began by travelling to Bago region which lies 90km to the north-east of Yangon.
Our first stop was at the Shwemawdaw Pagoda to see the towering 114m golden stupa. Then we made our way on to the Kanbawzathadi Palace - a reconstruction of the 16th century palace of King Bayinnaung of the Taungoo dynasty. Lastly, we took a look at the Shwethalyaung Buddha - a 55m long, 1,000 year old reclining Buddha statue.
From there we embarked on a long drive to Mon State for the highlight of the trip: an overnight stay at the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda a.k.a. the Golden Rock. This was an amazing adventure! We travelled in the coach to Kinpun village where we transferred to trucks with bench seats. The trucks took us up the mountain to a cable car. The cable car took us the last kilometre to the summit, where we were greeted with a chaotic but good natured scrum of people offering their services to carry your belongings (or even you) the last kilometre or so to the temple entrance.
Once at the entrance, it was shoes off even though the actual pagoda was still several hundred metres away. We were now at an altitude of 1,100m and shrouded by mist and clouds. It was an amazing experience - probably the most exotic place I have ever been. The Golden Rock itself balances seemingly impossibly on the edge of a high cliff and it is surrounded by a huge complex of shrines, halls and hotels.
Hundreds of pilgrims make merit well into the night and start again before sunrise. We got up about 4.30am and went out to watch the rituals. As the sun rose and the mists receded we were greeted with some stunning views and some huge insects! Then, all too soon, it was time to head back down the mountain for the next leg of the trip...
This video was shot on a GoPro Hero7 Black and features the 1990 song Sadeness Pt.1 by Enigma as its soundtrack.

Myanmar Golden Rock Truck Ride #1 23 Feb 2015
Kyaktiyo, Myanmar
The story of the famous balancing golden rock, Kyaktiyo, in Myanmar (or Burma, if you prefer), loosely translated.
Walking up to Golden Rock in Myanmar
Hiking Kyaiktiyo & Mount Zwegabin, Myanmar
On the 17th of October 2015, I climbed 4 hours to get to the top of Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock). It was beautiful at sunset... Took a pick-up truck down to Kinpun Basecamp at 6pm and stayed overnight.
Took a bus for 7,000 kyat to Hpa An to climb Mount Zwegabin. Caught a sunset after 2 hours of hiking and stayed overnight at the monastery with very accommodating monks. A 5,000 kyat donation was required too though haha, but it was still a fantastic experience. Caught a sunrise the next day.
Myanmar is too beautiful...

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, Golden Rock Myanmar Mon state
#kyaiktiyopagoda #GoldenRock #Myanmar #cablecar #ropeway
This is the golden rock, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, which is the Myanmar symbol. I went to from Mawlamyine to Kyaitiyo Pagoda by my motorbike. It takes a time for 3.5 hours(one way). But it is easy to get to there. and from Mawlamyine is easy to go more than Yangon. Yangon highway bus terminal is far and expensive taxi fee, and traffic jam is terrible, but Mawlamyine is cheap and no traffic jam.
This Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is located Mon State, not in Yangon. The same state Mawlamyine.

Mount Kyaiktiyo (Kyite Htee Yoe, the Golden Rock)
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda also known as Golden Rock) is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar. It is a small pagoda (7.3 metres (24 ft)) built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by devotees. According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. The balancing rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda. A glimpse of the gravity defying Golden Rock is believed to be enough of an inspiration for any person to turn to Buddhism.
Mount Kyaiktiyo, famous for the Golden Rock perched at its summit, is one of the three most sacred religious sites in Myanmar, along with the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Temple. Pilgrims come here from far and wide to worship and add gold leaf to the huge rock, which seems to defy gravity by delicately balancing on the edge of the 1100-metre high mountain.
For many visitors, the rock (standing 7.6 metres tall) and the gilded pagoda which sits on top of it (itself 7.3 metres tall), which are said to cover a hair of the Buddha, are the main draw, but another reason to make the journey are the panoramic 360 degree views of the surrounding Mon State mountains from the summit. Bear in mind that the summit area can get very crowded during the peak season from November to March.
There are a few hotels at the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo, but many people stay in the 'base camp' village of Kinpun, which has a lively atmosphere and a good range of places to eat. If you are staying in Kinpun, it makes most sense to arrive in the late afternoon or evening, and then ascend the mountain the following morning.
The journey up Mount Kyaiktiyo involves taking an extremely crowded open-top truck (which rushes alarmingly through the spectacular jungle scenery like a roller coaster); there is a stopping point located 1.5 kilometres from the summit, from which some choose to walk the fairly steep and strenuous, but otherwise straightforward, route to the top. By the time you have reached the pagoda at the summit, you will truly feel as if you have been on a pilgrimage!
It is possible to hike to the top of the mountain from Kinpun, which is an even longer (6 to 7 hour) and more exhausting journey than taking the truck, but the walk is mostly covered by the jungle canopy and gives the chance to see some lovely views and stupas along the way. If you want take part in the full religious experience when you get to the summit, there is a fee to place some gold leaf on the rock -- but only men are allowed to touch the rock.
The Nine Thousand Lights Festival takes place at Mount Kyaiktiyo in December and features food offerings at dawn and candle lighting after dark, illuminating the mountaintop.
