Viewpoint, popularly known as Point is the principal attraction in Kyaukpyu, the major town of Rakhine State, Myanmar. Located at the northwestern most tip of the town it is an Urban park which looks out into where the Bay of Bengal and the mouth of the Kyaukpyu River meet. Kyaukpyu Viewpoint consists of a sightseeing tower and part of the Kyaukpyu Beach. One of the main roads of Kyaukpyu, the Strand Road leads to the entrance to Point.

Kyaukpyu port to become model project in China-Myanmar BRI cooperation

Surrounded by superb natural conditions, the Kyaukpyu deep-water port in the western Rakhine State of Myanmar, is set to become another model project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework, benefiting both Myanmar and China.

In 2015, a consortium of six companies led by the China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) won the tender for building the Kyaukpyu SEZ. Three years later, after a marathon of negotiations, the CITIC-led consortium struck a framework agreement with Myanmar on the project.

More than six years after China first put forward the BRI, a grand undertaking to build a trade and infrastructure network linking Asia with Europe, Africa and beyond, the Kyaukpyu deep-water port will join the ever-expanding list of BRI projects.

Chinese Investment in Myanmar's Rakhine State Questioned

Myanmar's defacto leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is welcoming businesses to invest in Rakhine State, more than a year and a half since a brutal military crackdown forced hundreds of thousands of minority Rohingya Muslims to flee into neighboring Bangladesh. Despite the push for investment, many residents in Rakhine State worry they will not see any of the benefits. Libby Hogan has this report from Kyaukpyu Beach in Rakhine State.

A Dhaka Tribune world exclusive brings you an eye-witness report from the first journalistic incursion into Rakhine since the area was sealed to outsiders by Myanmar.

Due to the sealing off of Rakhine by Myanmar, and their refusal to allow entry to media and aid workers, until now all reports of the situation in Rakhine were based on the accounts of survivors and could not be independently corroborated.
