The Lizard, Poltesco & Kynance Cove Circular Day Hiking Cornwall England UK
The Lizard, Poltesco & Kynance Cove Circular Day Hiking Cornwall England UK
This was the sixth and last day hiking trip myself and my partner Anne undertook on a Holiday Fellowship (HF) Holidays hiking holiday in St Ives Cornwall, England, UK in May 2010. The route was circular around the Lizard coastline from Lizard Green via Poltesco, Carleon, Cadgwith, Polpeor and Kynance Cove. The distance was 11.25 miles with a total ascent of 1200 feet. This was the longest day of hiking during the wee with just enough time to eat an ice cream on Lizard Green at the end.

The coastal path walk is from a historic Mullion fishing Cove via Kynance cove on to Lizard Point, Lizard Lighthouse. Hope you like and enjoy this new video. Also l want to thank you all so much for your kinds words and great comments you made on all my coastal path walk videos, Made by Huggie Huggie2love.
Walks along the cliffs are well worth the effort. There are some stunning views from the coastal footpath. an attractive walk along the cliffs. It is a sandy beach popular with surfers. The coastal path runs through Polurrian Cove, along the cliffs, down through Mullion Cove and up again on to Predannack Heath.
The dramatic Mullion Cove is a must. It is owned by the National Trust and has a pretty working harbour, protected from the winter gales by stout sea walls. The harbour was completed in 1895 The cove had a lifeboat station from 1867 until 1909, as there were frequent wrecks under Mullion cliffs along a stretch of dangerous coastline. Inland there are the remains of Wheal Unity copper mine, which operated for about 200 years from the early 18th century.
Mullion is the largest village on the Lizard and has shops, inns, cafes and restaurants, craft shops and art galleries. There is a golf course close to Mullion. In the centre of the village, the mainly 13th century church of St Mellanus is renowned for its richly-carved oak bench-ends
The POLDHU wireless station was used by the Marconi company for the first trans-oceanic service of wireless telegraphy which was opened with a second Marconi station at Glance bay in Canada in 1902.When the Poldhu station was erected in 1900 wireless was in its infancy, when it was demolished in 1935, wireless was established for communication on land, at sea and in the air.
Mullion Golf Club situated on the cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula is not only the most Southerly course but one of the most beautiful courses in the West Country. Framed by sandy coves and protected reed beds, the course, now well past it's centenary, has always attracted the literary giants who not only enjoyed the golf but also fascinated by the ambience.
At Kynance Cliff the path travels around some rocky outcrops crusted with yellow and green lichens and then drops steeply downhill to the cove.
Kynance is one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall and as a result one of the most painted and photographed. It is now owned by the National Trust the brilliant turquoise water and white sand, with islands, caves and unexpected views Located less than 2 miles from The Lizard and once remote and difficult to get to, but is one of the most beautiful seaside locations with it picturesque, cove
The coastal formations are shapely, the black rocks outstanding, the sand soft and almost white and the orange lichen contrasts superbly with the blue sky, turquoise water and green grass. Nature at her most artistic Kynance Cove a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Lizard Complex, composed of peridotite and serpentinite. These are both igneous rocks, formed through volcanic processes between 359 and 416 million years ago
Quaint cottages line the road to Church Cove and St Wynwallow Church is a halfway point between the cove and the village. Although only a small cove, many goings on can be observed, such as the small fishing boats that are launched from the slipway by local fishermen and the Lizard lifeboat station can be seen from the cliffs.
St Wynwallow's Church, Landewednack, The Lizard St Wynwallow's Church in the pretty hamlet of Landewednack is the most southerly church in mainland Britain. The church was probably founded around AD 600, though no obvious remains of that first church can be seen today. The church is largely built of granite and the local serpentine stone, creating an attractive patchwork pattern of stone.
The Lizard Lifeboat Station can refer to several Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat stations located on The Lizard in Cornwall, The Lizard lifeboat station is located at Kilcobben Cove on The Lizard peninsula.

Exploring Lizard Point in Cornwall
Kynance Cove - lizzard - Cornwall - England
360° view of Kynance Cove - National Trust - notice the water on eiter side!
The Lizard Peninsula
It had been a while since we took a visit to The Lizard Point, this was September 2017 and weather was good, very good.
Enjoyable walk along the coastal path and we saw seals surfing in the waves.
Lizard Point with its lighthouse is the most southerly point in Great Britain. It is famous for the local serpentine stone, a unique metamorphic rock which is dark green veined with red and white. Serpentine ornaments were particularly fashionable in Victorian times but the village still has several serpentine turners working during the season.

Kynance Cove Beach National Trust near Lizard Point-Time lapse video
If stunning had a big sister then Kynance Cove would be her.
Located on the west side of the Lizard and probably the most photographed and painted location in Cornwall, the contrast between the cove’s white sand beach and the dark red and green serpentine rock produces a breathtaking sight.
It's the summer holidays and that means that it's very busy at Kynance now. We recommend arriving before 11am to try to avoid the possibility of the car park being full. Although there is alternative parking in nearby Lizard village, which is around two miles away, this can also become full and we ask that you do not park in nearby laybys or on the side of the road. This can cause problems for the local community and limit access for emergency vehicles. There is also National Trust parking at Lizard Point, which is approximately two miles walk to Kynance.
Kynance Cove gets very busy in the summer months but closeby is Coverack - a picturesque fishing village which is now fully open for business after its recent flash flood.
There’s a steep 10-15 minute walk down to the cove but that doesn’t stop visitors who head to the beach for a family day out, a romantic stroll along the sand or to photograph the moment when in the sunlight on the sea turns a brilliant turquoise colour.
At low tide you can explore the towering rocks stacks and the caves with names such as The Parlour and The Drawing Room and located just above the beach is an eco-friendly café selling Cornish pasties, fresh sandwiches, baguettes, homemade cakes and cream teas along with beach goods. From Kynance there is a fantastic 2 mile scenic walk around the coast to Lizard Point, mainland UK’s most southerly point.
Kynance Cove is owned and looked after by the National Trust and is able to care and conserve areas like this thanks to their members, volunteers and donors. Car park free to National Trust members.
Kynance Cove Beach
If beautiful had a twin sister then Kynance Cove would be her. Located on the west side of the Lizard and probably the most photographed and painted location in Cornwall, the contrast between the cove’s white sand beach and the dark red and green rock produces a breathtaking sight. Kynance Cove is one of the best places to visit in Cornwall. There are fascinating coastal walks either side of the beach, boasting the magnificent coastline and the terrific turquoise water.
The beach is a great spot for surfing when there is swell and if you're not into surfing, then take a two mile walk around to Lizard point. There are great caves on the beach to explore too as long as you're aware of the tide.
More about this beach:
- Dog friendly from October 1st - Easter Day
- Large National Trust carpark
- Great beach cafe with toilets
- Amazing coastal walks along the beach
Although Kynance Cove is a must visit place in Cornwall, the accessibility can make that very challenging. The closest car park is a 10 minute walk away from the beach, and that is along a cliff top with uneven ground, stones, steep descents and steps. Once down on the beach, you have to climb across stones before you reach the sand.
Unfortunately, Kynance Cove Beach does not feature on our website beach guide however all information regarding the beach is written above.
