Cherry Blossom Tokyo
Our first trip to Japan. First stop was Ueno park to check out the cherry blossom. Which we didn't expect to happen during our trip. But the news reported it and lucky for us we got to experience it. Then we off to Asasuka where we found ourself in souvenir market place near Sensoji temple. We had lunch there in a traditional eating place with mats and small tables. Next was electric city, Akihabara.
Monzennakacho, Tokyoーtemple town in Shitamachi「門前仲町」
There is a big temple and a big shrine in Monzennakacho. This district prospered as a temple town as well as a geisha district in the Edo era. Although there is no sign of showing that this used to be a Geisha district anymore, it is still a very busy town. But once you leave the main street you can feel relaxed since there are rivers and canals nearby, which certainly serve as a kind of oasis.

Nippori Station is a major intersection of the JR and Keisei lines. The JR Yamanote, Joban Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line and the Keisei Main Line for Ueno, Aoto, Funabashi, and Narita Airport intersect at Nippori Station. The Nippori-Toneri Liner operated by Toei runs 10km on elevated track from Nippori to Minumadai-shinsuikoen.

Zoshigaya Kishimojin-do (雑司ケ谷鬼子母神堂) is a Shinto-shrine-like Buddhist temple which enshrines Kishimojin, a goddess which originated in India and is the protector of deliveries and nurturing of children. This temple was founded in 1578 and its present complex was built in 1664.

About 4,000 fireworks were launched from a barge on the Arakawa River for this annual hanabi taikai—and those watching from the river bank either side were just 150 meters away from the action. Because the event was held on a weekday the venue was a little less crowded than at other firework festivals in Tokyo with about 350,000 spectators. On the river, we saw some traditional Edo period style cruising boats decorated with Japenese lanterns. The show lasted for about one hour.

In a world increasingly fragmented across the kaleidoscope of beliefs and religions, it is easy to feel that we may never see peace in our time. However, are we really as divided as we think? Daiko Matsuyama, Deputy Head Priest of Taizoin Zen Buddhist Temple in Kyoto, Japan holds inter-faith dialogue as one powerful strategy that can bring our disparate world together. As a first step, Matsuyama encourages us to respect other religions as equal in value to our own religions and beliefs. Far from the stereotypical image of the secluded, meditating monk, Matsuyama seeks to spread the teachings of Buddhism throughout the world. After hosting a G8 Summit Sherpa Meeting in 2008, Matsuyama was appointed as a Visit Japan Goodwill Ambassador as well as a Kyoto Travel Omotenashi Ambassador. He also visited the Vatican as a representative of Buddhist priests, and participated in Ekiden In Luxembourg. This year he helped organize the interfaith leaders’ Ekiden in Kyoto and attended The World Economic Forum as a young Japanese leader. Both in Japan and internationally Matsuyama seeks to teach the importance of communication in building a peaceful future.
