Sakura in Kyoraku Park, Maizuru City
These cherry blossom trees are an important symbol of Japan and the United States' friendship and peace. In Kyoraku Park these trees are called Aloha Sakura, because they were a gift from Mr. Takaki. Mr. Fujio Takaki was a second generation Japanese-American from Hawaii.
After World War II, Maizuru was occupied by the US Army. Mr. Fujio Takaki, was stationed in Maizuru and it was a sad place after the War, much like many other Japanese cities.
Mr. Takaki came up with the idea of buying cherry blossom trees for the city. He hoped that the trees would bring happiness and hope to the people of Maizuru.
Mr. Takaki never saw the planting of the trees in Maizuru, because he was assigned to another area of operations. However, in 1994 he was invited back to Maizuru to see how the trees had grown.
Fujio Takaki had never told anyone about his involvement with the cherry trees after the war. He did not want the recognition. All he wanted was to bring smiles to the people of Maizuru. Sadly, Mr. Takaki passed away in 2004.
Maizuru, sadly, does not offer any information about the Aloha Sakura in English.

Because of my interest and research of this park, students have made a documentary of this park. I hope with their help, Maizuru will promote this park better to the guests and citizens. These students have won the NHK Kyoto competition and will be moving onto the finals in Tokyo in July!

Japan Trip - 13 (Maizuru 2)
Photos and video from my 2nd and 3rd trips to Maizuru. On October 18th, we went to Maizuru Port (Maizuru is a key district headquarters for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force) and then the Brick Museum. We finished the evening with a stop at Cafe Lennon (as in John Lennon) for some hot chocolate. On Sunday, October 21st, we visited the old shopping district and then saw the outside of Tanabe Castle. The castle closed just as we got there, but we returned on the 26th.

Kichisaka Fortress (吉坂砲台)
Here, I go looking for Kichisaka Horui or Kichisaka Fortress. It is located in Takahama, Fukui and it was build by the Japanese Navy between 1900-1902. It overlooks the valley that leads into Kyoto prefecture. I believe it was built to project Japan from an invasion from the north. Maizuru was/is an important naval town, and there are many fortresses that overlook Maizuru and Wakasa Bay. However, this is the only one inland.
There are two separate parts to it. The lower half and higher half. It was much bigger than I was expecting and it is much bigger than other fortresses I have been to in Maizuru. A very interesting place.

Kichisaka Fortress/吉坂砲台 (GoPro)
This is the second time for me to visit Kichisaka Fortress and this time I lead a group of 7 people. To my surprise and disappointment, parts of the trail leading up to the abandoned military fortress have been destroyed. I think because of logging, but I don't really know.
This is located in Takahama, Fukui and not Maizuru, Kyoto.
I'm not talking in this video.

Thought it would be fun to edit a video for this. I think just showing the clips would have been boring.
Again, like the summer one I am not so sure how I feel about this. Sometimes I really like it and others not so much.

The Maizuru heroes of justice, the Maizuru Chattaman! Or maybe the Maizuru Power Rangers!
The red one is called Aka-renga or red brick.
The blue one is called Maizuru wan or Maizuru Bay.
The pink one is called Sakura or cherry blossom.
There is also a green one who is called Manganji (Maizuru pepper), but we did not see him.
Also there is a yellow one who is called Niku Jaga (Maizuru beef & potato stew), and we did not see her, too.
The three were fighting evil in the La Port department store.

Sept. 16, 2013
After the rain had stopped I went out on my bike to look around Higashi Maizuru.
As I was expecting, all the waterways were extremely flooded.
I put my camera in a plastic bag and attached it to my monopod as I rode my bike. I am sure I was a sight to see with my camera and rain gear on.
