Bishkek-Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and has a population of about one million people. Bishkek is located in the Chuy Valley, at the northern edge of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, at about 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level.
The first mention of Bishkek was the fortress of Pishpek, constructed in 1825 by the Khanate of Kokand. Pishpek was built to protect caravan routes carrying goods between Tashkent and Lake Issyk-Kul, across the Chuy Valley. After a battle between Russian imperial troops and the Khanate of Kokand in 1860, the fort was destroyed and the area became the edge of the Russian Empire. In 1897, the population of Pishpek was a total of 6,600 people, and rather than being a city, was more like a dusty village of mud houses.
Under Soviet rule, the city developed rapidly. In 1925, Pishpek became the capital of the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast, the precursor of today’s Kyrgyzstan. In 1926, Pishpek became Frunze, named after the revolutionary and military leader Mikhail Frunze, who was born there. Frunze can still be seen in the city’s airport code - FRU. In 1991, the city was renamed once again, to Bishkek. According to experts, “bishkek” is the stick used for churning mare’s milk for the traditional fermented drink, kumis.
Today, Bishkek is one of the major cities of Central Asia, and is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan. The population numbers over one million, with over 80 nationalities represented. The main language of international communication is Russian, but Kyrgyz and English are very widespread.
Sights Overview
There are several major museums in Bishkek, the most interesting of which are the Historical Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Frunze House Museum. Check out performances by the Opera and Ballet Theater, the Russian and Kyrgyz Drama Theaters, the Bishkek City Drama Theater, and the State Philharmonic. There are also a number of venues where pop musicians play, as well as art exhibitions, music festivals, and plenty of interesting events.
There are plenty of places that showcase Bishkek’s unique history. There are several monuments to Soviet architecture in the city center, including Ala-Too Square, the Historical Museum, Philharmonia, and several monuments, such as a Monument to the Red Guards and a Monument to the Martyrs of the Revolution. Check out other newer monuments to Manas, manaschy (those who recite the Epic of Manas), and to those killed by government violence in 2002 and 2010. Bishkek is also famous for being one of the greenest cities in Central Asia, with Oak Park, Erkindik Boulevard, and Panfilov Park being popular destinations in the summer.

Kyrgyzstan - Bishkek + Ala Archa NP
Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic). Bishkek is also the administrative centre of the Chuy Region.
Bishkek is situated at an altitude of about 800 meters (2,600 ft), just off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, an extension of the Tian Shan mountain range. These mountains rise to a height of 4,855 meters (15,928 ft) and provide a backdrop to the city. North of the city, a fertile and gently undulating steppe extends far north into neighboring Kazakhstan. Bishkek is connected to the Turkestan-Siberia Railway by a spur line.
Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings combined with numerous Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards. Streets follow a grid pattern with innumerable trees to provide shade in the hot summers.
The Ala Archa National Park is an alpine national park in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, established in 1976 and located approximately 40 km south of the capital city of Bishkek. The park covers about 200 square kilometers, and its altitude ranges from about 1,500 meters at the entrance to a maximum of 4,895 meters at Peak Semenova Tian-Shanski, the highest peak in the Kyrgyz Ala-tau range of the Tian Shan. There are more than 20 small and large glaciers and some 50 mountain peaks within the park.
Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek
During one of our last days in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan we revisited one of our favorite restaurants in the city to eat traditional Kyrgyz food. Food in Kyrgyzstan is closely related to that of Kazakh cuisine and we ordered all of our favorites including Plov, Shashlik, Manti, Lagman & Kymyz. Traditional Kyrgzy food revolves heavily around horse meat, mutton and beef along with a heavy dose of dairy products influenced by its historically nomadic culture. Below you'll find more information about the specific dishes.
Plov (плов) – Also known as pilaf or paloo, this is a mixed rice dish that features pieces of meat (usually mutton, beef, or chicken) and shredded carrots. It is cooked in a cast-iron cauldron and it is delicious.
Shashlik (шашлы́к): shashlyk (meaning skewered meat) was originally made of lamb. Nowadays it is also made of pork or beef depending on local preferences and religious observances. The skewers are either threaded with meat only, or with alternating pieces of meat, fat, and vegetables, such as bell pepper, onion, mushroom and tomato.
Manti (манты) – These are steamed dumplings filled with ground meat and onions. You can also get vegetarian ones filled with pumpkin or potatoes.
Samsa (самсы) – This is a popular street snack. Picture a flaky pastry pocket stuffed with ingredients which include: chicken, cheese, cabbage, beef, or other fillings.
Lagman (лагман) – Laghman is a noodle dish which can be served as a soup or fried, and it features chopped peppers with a spicy vinegar sauce.
Ashlyam fu (Ашлям фу) – This is a cold and spicy soup that has meat, veggies, cold noodles and starchy noodles.
Besh barmak (бешбармак) – The name of this dish translates to ‘five fingers’ because it is so tasty it is meant to be eaten with your whole hand. It is a plate of steamed noodles and onions with meat, which can be lamb or horse.
Kymyz (кумыс) – Can I offer you a glass of fermented mare’s milk? It tastes nothing like what you’d imagine – it’s salty, fizzy and it kind of reminded me of Korean makgeolli – so give it a try.

Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek Travel Video Transcript:
So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we're ordering a big spread. This is probably enough food for like five or six people but Sam and I are going to try and eat it all and just showcase what Central Asian cuisine is all about. So we hope you enjoy.
So we're almost done the meal. Any particular favorites?
So stuffed.
Um, the shashlik (шашлы́к) was amazing. That was so so good. It was so juicy and they don't really put a lot of spices on the beef but it just has like that natural flavor so that was really nice. It was smokey, tender flavor. Love that. It was good. And also the rice. I'm usually not a very big fan of rice but it was really good. It was like wild brown rice so that was really tasty.
Yeah, those are two of my favorites as well. And I'm going to add that I really like the manti (манты). The pumpkin dumplings. Of course. Dumplings.
So that wraps up our feast of feasts. It was an amazing like traditional Kyrgyz meal. We ordered so much food that we're actually taking a lot of it home. This is probably enough either for three or four people and in terms of the price it came to one thousand two hundred Som which right now is seventeen US dollars. So that was incredible value. I mean we got three different kinds of drinks, we got tea, we got a liter of Pepsi, we got a liter of mare's milk plus all of that food that we showed you including the bread, the dumplings, the meat, the rice, the noodles. So you can come here and have an epic feast and it is not going to cost you a fortune.
This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Bishkek has by far the best nightlife in the country. Both Russian and European operas and ballets are performed at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre.
The Russian Drama Theatre has Russian-language productions, while the State Academic Drama Theatre stages work in the Kyrgyz language.
The State Philharmonic hosts classical music concerts as well as pop and folklore events. Bishkek also has many discos and nightclubs. These are best approached with caution as drunken attacks on foreigners are not unheard of.
Elsewhere in the country, things are very quiet at night, although some restaurants turn into dancehalls in places like Karakol or Naryn after nightfall.

Wedding Palace and Bird's Eye View in Bishkek - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
It is our last day in Kyrgyzstan. We start the day with a visit to the wedding palace. It was renovated with the support of USAID. As we already know from Osh, the Kyrgyz love furious wedding celebrations. The wedding cars parked in front of the palace beat everything we have seen before.
Besides long stretch limos, there are also cars in the shape of old carriages.
After marveling at the cars, we take a look at the wedding palace. Inside it resembles a fairy tale castle. A grand staircase leads into the wedding hall.
Afterward, we have a snack in the restaurant Arzu. On the open terrace, we enjoy the beautiful summer weather.
When we leave the restaurant, we notice the Sports Palace, an arena for 3000 persons, on the other side of the street. But in front of it, there is a monument of an impressive figure with a horse on his shoulders. It is Kozhomkul Kaba uulu. He was born in 1888 or 1889 at the Suusamyr plateau. He was 2.3 m tall and weighted 165 kg.
At that time the plateau was only accessible over a steep pass. When in a winter storm his horse couldn't go any further, he shouldered it and carried it the rest of the way. He was an exceptional athlete and as a wrestler invincible. At the Suusamyr plateau, there is a small museum with clothes, and pictures of him. In front of it lie 600 kg of rock that he has moved. Despite his strength, he was a sensitive and loving person. He got 67 years old.
Following this we drive, the Chuy Ave up to the corner Erkindik Ave. Here we make a short sightseeing flight with the drone to get an impression of the city from above. We start at the km 0 by which the street distances in Kyrgyzstan from Biskek out are measured.
From the air, it is noticeable that the center of Bishkek is very green because of the ubiquitous artificial irrigation.
We will learn the details about the buildings of the city at the following tour.

Unser letzter Tag in Kirgisistan bricht an.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR) is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited. The relaxed vibe, grand public squares, and eclectic cafes and restaurants combine to make Bishkek a unique destination.
Summertime is especially nice in Bishkek, when the majestic parks come alive with exotic trees and flowers. Lovers walk hand in hand while pensioners pass the time playing chess.
Imposing Soviet-era architecture is everywhere in Bishkek. While some of the locals may not appreciate it, buildings such as the National Historical Museum, Marriage Hall, Palace of Sport, and Philharmonic are all the more impressive when seen in person.
Kyrgyzstan's University system is centered in Bishkek, with many institutions of higher learning. Universities include the American University of Central Asia, Kyrgyz State National University, Kyrgyz Russian Slavonic University, International Ataturk-Ala-too University, International University Of Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz Technical University, and Arabaev Kyrgyz State University.
As with any city, Bishkek is evolving. Cranes span the skyline as new construction takes place at a frantic pace. Imported cars are edging out Soviet era models as retro Lada's are replaced with newer Toyotas.
China's influence is apparent, with many Chinese firms investing in Bishkek. Consequently, a large Chinese population has emerged in the city.
Each time I return, I wonder what will change next. Although Bishkek's skyline is in a state of flux, the wonderful traditions and welcoming hospitality of the Kyrgyz people are sure to remain.

Kyrgyzstan is a rugged Central Asian country along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean. The Tian Shan mountains, which surround the old caravan route and dominate the country, are home to snow leopards, lynx, and sheep. In the south, the millennia-old city of Osh has a huge, busy bazaar that was a stop on the Silk Road.

???????? 24 BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan is таң калаарлык! - Block Explorer
Bishkek (Бишкек), with a population in 2012 of more than 900,000, is both the capital and the largest city of Kyrgyzstan.
Bishkek is the capital of what is called officially the Kyrgyz Republic and sits in the Tien Shan mountain range in the Chui Valley. It is a relatively new city and has limited historical sites, but it makes a great place to start your trips to the mountains and alpine lakes of the Tien Shans.
Bishkek is, however, an interesting example of a czarist planned city; laid on a grid with wide boulevards flanked by irrigation canals and large trees, buildings with marble façades, and Soviet apartment complexes. Many young travellers find Bishkek's nightlife a delight and the people are friendly and very hospitable. Bishkek is a city of many young people that hang out in clubs and small cafés. Kyrgyzstan has the most liberal tourist visa regime in Central Asia, so Bishkek makes a great place to start a tour of the silk road and collect your visas to neighbouring countries.
