Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu
When Dazaifu's Kyushu National Museum (九州国立博物館, Kyūshū Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) was opened in 2005, it joined the Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara National Museums to become only the fourth national museum in the country. The other three museums were built in the late 1800s, making the opening of the Dazaifu museum quite an event. During the Nara and Heian Periods (710-1185), Dazaifu was the site of a government office that dealt with diplomatic relations with mainland Asia. The museum recognizes its host city's history by basing its exhibits on the concept of Understanding Japanese culture from an Asian point of view.
The museum building itself is a massive blue construction that resembles a sports stadium more than an exhibition space. The museum's appearance is made even more striking by the fact that it is located in a city as small as Dazaifu. Upon first entering the building visitors will surely be impressed by the spacious entrance hall. The main exhibition is on the fourth floor and is divided into five chronological sections that span Japanese history from the Prehistoric Era to the Edo Period. The sections are further divided into smaller rooms that have a unifying theme.
The museum has an impressive collection of artifacts that are presented in both a creative and informative fashion. There are also a number of small theaters displaying short movies, one of which uses impressive super-high-definition technology. Special exhibitions are displayed on the third floor and change every few months. On the first floor, there is a room called the Ajippa with games and hands-on exhibits from various Asian cultures, that is particularly well suited for kids.

Ninety-third Episode: Kyushu Geibunkan Art Gallery/Museum Opening
There has been a large building being built beside the new Shinkansen (Bullet Train) station for a couple years now. It's was finally finished a few months ago, and we took the kids to the mini festival they had for the opening! There were classes and workshops to do, food to eat, and stuff to buy as well as artwork to look at! I'm hoping I get to go there often! Kumiko went to a one shot cooking class there already, and there will be a video soon of one of the things she learned to make! :)

MYSTERIOUS FOX SHRINE ADVENTURE! Dazaifu - Fukuoka Day Trip
Day trip to Dazaifu to explore an Inari shrine and meet some awesome fox statues!

Dazaifu is a popular day trip from Fukuoka (Kyushu) on the train. We went there and to Yanagawa on the same day, with the Dazaifu & Yanagawa Sightseeing Ticket from Nishitetsu railways. You can explore an old Japanese street with local snacks and souvenirs, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and a mysterious inari shrine in the woods (my fav!). There's also Kyushu National Museum, a theme park and more shrines to explore, so you could spend a whole day there if you wanted to.

The Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu, Fukuoka, Japan was opened in October 2005. The building is designed like a greenhouse to maintain a steady teperature using sun light, and to collect rainwater falling on it and use for non-drinking purposes.

THe inside of the Museum. A little bit of a look at the wanton waste of natural resources. I would like to know where all the wood came from. I am left dismayed and angered at the hyprocracy of the Japanese.

Going over the old video files I came across these clips. Not really knowing what to do with them, I decided to put them together and create a nostalgic movie.
Making our way to Fukuoka from Hiroshima, the fun is just going to continue. A list of items of what/where we went is below.
Just as an FYI - Fukuoka and the name Hakata are somewhat synonymous. Hakata is a ward in Fukuoka, but most people refer to Fukuoka as Hakata, so please don't get confused if I use the name interchangeably.
Lastly, because I didn't know where to put Dazaifu (we spent 1/2 a day there) I tacked it onto the end of this video. Those places that we went to are also listed below.
