Nunca antes vacas pastando num campo foram tão agradáveis de se ver! Um passeio pelo Mosteiro “Sem Frescura” e seus lindos jardins complementam o passeio.

Un ashram cistercien

Kurisumala Ashram est une abbaye cistercienne de rite syro-malankar dans les montagnes de l´intérieur du Kerala, en Inde du Sud. Fondé en 1958 par le père Francis Mahieu, moine de l´abbaye de Scourmont en Belgique, l´ashram reçut son affiliation à l´ordre cistercien en 1998. Vingt moines y pratiquent une liturgie originale, entre rite syrien et indien. Ce documentaire nous plonge au coeur de ce lieux original pour cerner ses formes liturgiques et pour réunir quelques chose de ces deux mondes si éloignés dans l'espace. Visit Belgium - 12/589 – Chimay - Castle, Abbey, Cheese and the ‘Lac de Virelles’

A Belgian Challenge, I would like to visit all 589 Belgian Municipalities. In this video visit Chimay, a municipality in the province of Hainaut.

Chimay is famous for its beer and cheese, but there is so much more to explore in this area!

We started the day in the center of Chimay where we visited the castle of Chimay. The history of the Castle of the Princes of Chimay goes back to the year 1000. Today the family still lives there and we met one of the princesses!!

After a walk in the center and a visit to the church of saints Pierre and Paul, we took the car and made a stop at the Espace Chimay. We had a wonderful lunch and tasted the different kind of Chimay cheeses.

We continued our day to the abbey of Scourmont and we saw the ‘L’oise’ spring.

The weather was not very good and we hesitated to visit the Aquascope of Virelles, which is situated at the lake of Virelles (natural reserve). I was happy we decided to visit this place because it was stunning! The views took my breath away!

Last stop of the day was the village of Lompret, which holds the title of ‘one of the most beautiful villages of Wallonia’.

--ABOUT CHIMAY---
The brewery was founded inside Scourmont Abbey, in the Belgian municipality of Chimay in 1862

The brewery produces three ales as well as a patersbier for the monks themselves which is occasionally sold as Chimay Gold; they are known as Trappist beers because they are made in a Trappist monastery. It was the first brewery to use the Trappist Ale designation on its labels.

As with all other Trappist breweries, the beer is sold only for financial support of the monastery and good causes. The brewery business pays rent for use of the property within the abbey, which is used to support the monastic community. The majority of the profit from the sale of the beer is distributed to charities and for community development around the region. As of 2007, sales figures for Chimay products exceeded $50 million per year.

The water for the beers is drawn from a well located inside the monastery walls. The filtered solids from the beer mash are recycled into livestock feed which is given to the same cows that produce the milk for Chimay cheeses.

The water used for the production of a great beer such as Chimay must be of utmost quality and absolute pureness. Scourmont Abbey is fortunate in that the water drawn from the two wells located on the production site itself is low in minerals - it is a real gift from nature.
