Movement-Based Programs in Public Libraries: Best Practices from the U.S. and Canada

Event Description: More and more libraries offer programs and services that encourage and enable people of all ages and abilities to engage in and to learn about the importance of regular physical activity. According to the CDC, regular physical activity is one of the most important things people can do for their health. This one-hour webinar features two librarians from the U.S. and Canada with experience and expertise developing, leading, and sustaining movement-based programs, including Fitness Fridays, StoryWalks, Yoga Classes, Running Clubs, Dancing programs, Checking Out Gym Passes and Health Kits, and much, much more! Learn what works, how to form/sustain partnerships, share ideas, and get inspired to try new things at your library! This webinar will feature ample time for question and answer. Speaker bios:
Jenn Carson, MSLIS, CYT, CCYT is the Director of the LP Fisher Public Library in Woodstock, NB and has been delivering movement-based programs in libraries and schools for eight years. She is the creator of yogainthelibrary.com, a popular resource for library staff and teachers interested in delivering yoga and mindfulness-based programs in their communities. She is on her third year of blogging about physical literacy programs for the American Library Association at programminglibrarian.org. Carson is also writing a book for ALA Editions called Physical Literacy: Movement-Based Programs in Libraries which is being released in June 2018. Her team was recently given the New Brunswick Public Library Service Innovation Award for their physical literacy initiatives.

Gwen GeigerWolfe, MPH, MLS, is a part-time Information Services librarian at Lawrence Public Library who specializes in health. She leads the library’s “Health Mashers” committee of local health partners that serves to steer and inform health programming at the library and foster organizational collaboration. She also serves as the Communications Coordinator for the Healthy Food For All work group of the LiveWell Lawence Coalition. In her off time, she works on cataloging the library at her children’s school, gardening, singing, and imagining a world with more kindness, creativity, and laughter.

This webinar is the first in a quarterly series of free programs for public libraries offered as part of the Let's Move in Libraries initiative, led by Dr. Noah Lenstra from the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
