Travel Sintra, Portugal - Pena Palace in Sintra
Take a tour of Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
.Built in 1854, Portugal's Pena Palace stands on a hill above the town of Sintra.
Having won the award for Cultural landscape by UNESCO world Heritage, this Romanticist architecture is one of the best in Europe.
The palace overlooks most of metropolitan Lisbon.
It was built on the grounds of a monastery often visited by Spanish royals.
Part of the old convent has been restored, and stands alongside the castle.
Pena Palace has been a national monument since 1910 and was converted into a museum.
Outside the palace, a large and diverse park offers a stunning glimpse of nature.
Sintra, Portugal: A Day Trip from Lisbon
My hostel in Lisbon took a day trip to Sintra, Portugal. We spent a full day in Sintra, visiting Quinta da Regaleira, Azenhas Do Mar, Praia da Adraga, and Cabo da Roca, and driving by the iconic Pena Palace (although we didn't get to go in). Even though my solo trip to Lisbon was in early May and Portugal was a bit chilly, our day trip to Sintra was absolutely amazing and Quinta da Regaleira in particular was an incredibly unique experience.
Our Sintra Portugal Tour was operated by the hostel I stayed at GoodMorning Lisbon during my solo trip to Lisbon. I'll be sharing a review video of GoodMorning Lisbon at a later time (although, spoiler alert, this quickly became my favorite hostel in the world after spending four nights there).
You MUST visit Sintra for one day if you're staying in Lisbon, Portugal! If you're looking for things to do in Lisbon, have an extra day or two while on a solo trip to Lisbon, or want things to do in Portugal while you're on holidays, be sure to either book an all-day Sintra tour or rent a car and stop along the points in this video. Our Sintra day trip from Lisbon was one of my favorite memories of my solo trip to Lisbon.
Below are the locations we visited:
Quinta da Regaleira (UNESCO World Heritage site)
Azenhas Do Mar (a seaside town in Portugal)
Praia da Adraga (beach)
Cabo da Roca (Western most point in Europe)
Pena Palace (we weren't able to go in but I've seen some amazing photos of the castle grounds)

Sintra is a municipality and town in the Grande Lisboa subregion of Portugal, and considered part of the Portuguese Riviera. Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments, which has resulted in its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has become a major tourist centre, visited by many day-trippers who travel from the capital Lisbon.
In addition to the Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, the parishes of the town of Sintra are dotted with royal retreats, estates, castles and other buildings, including the medieval Castelo dos Mouros, the Pena Palace and the Sintra Palace.

A tour of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal
Quinta da Regaleira is a 20th century residence located in Sintra, and if you don't research or know anything about it, this doesn't sound like something extraordinary or worth a visit, but you should really trust us on this one. If beautiful residence architecture and romantic palaces are not really your cup of tea, fear not, for us the true gem is the garden of the residence. A luxurious park of four hectares that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions.
The Initiation Wells are two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers lined with stairs. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.

Blog:

Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal, May 2017
Quinta da Regaleira is an estate located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the Cultural Landscape of Sintra. Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra. The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire, which is based on the nickname of its best known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.
The land that is now Quinta da Regaleira had many owners over the years. It belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, a family of wealthy merchants from Porto, when it was sold in 1892 to Carvalho Monteiro for 25,000 réis. Monteiro was eager to build a bewildering place where he could collect symbols that reflected his interests and ideologies. With the assistance of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, he recreated the 4-hectare estate. In addition to other new features, he added enigmatic buildings that allegedly held symbols related to alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and the Rosicrucians. The architecture Manini designed evoked Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles. The construction of the current estate commenced in 1904 and much of it was completed by 1910.
extensive family. He ordered repairs and restoration work for the property. In 1987, the estate was sold, once again, to the Japanese Aoki Corporation and ceased to serve as a residence. The corporation kept the estate closed to the public for ten years, until it was acquired by the Sintra Town Council in 1997. Extensive restoration efforts were promptly initiated throughout the estate. It finally opened to the public in June 1998 and began hosting cultural events. In August of that same year, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture classified the estate as public interest property.

Visiting Pena Palace | Day Trip to Sintra from Lisbon, Portugal
Join us as we visit Pena Palace on a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, Portugal. Traveling to Sintra from Lisbon is as easy as can be with frequent trains departing from Rossio station in central Lisbon making a 30-40 minute journey to Sintra, Portugal. We paid 5 Euros for a our ticket and hoped on the next train departing shortly after we arrived at the station. Before we did any sightseeing, as per our usual style, we grabbed a quick bite at Café Saudade where we had scrumptious paninis and a couple of local desserts (queijada and travesseiro). We'd highly recommend this place as the prices were very reasonable and the quality of food was excellent.
After it was time to figure out how we'd visit the attraction we came all the way to Sintra to visit - Pena Palace! After checking several options we realized the local bus was the cheapest option (5.50 Euros for a return trip) and so we hopped on bus number 434.
After arriving at Pena Palace we paid 11.50 Euros each for an adult ticket and my parents got a senior discount at 9 Euros per person. Firstly we toured the exterior of Pena Palace where we we marvelled at the bright colors and various influences in terms of its eclectic architecture. We also had wonderful views over Sintra and especially of the Moorish Castle. Afterwards we walked around inside before calling it a day. Overall, we'd say it would take around an hour to three hours to check this place out thoroughly. It is bigger than it looks from a lower vantage point.
And that was our day! Visiting Sintra to properly check out the town and other attractions warrants an overnight stay and with just an afternoon to spare we really only focussed on Pena Palace. However, if you're looking for an interesting day trip from Lisbon we'd highly recommend considering Sintra. Ciao for now!

Visiting Pena Palace on a day trip to Sintra, Portugal Travel Video Transcript:
But you guys know the drill. First things first, we needed to grab a quick bite. We spotted a cafe serving up pastries, paninis, and all sorts of baked goods, and that was all the convincing we needed.
With our appetites satiated, we continued our stroll through town, and then decided we should probably hop on a bus, and save our legs for visiting the attraction that brought us all the way out here: the Pena Palace.
Once we reached the gates of the Pena Palace we purchased our tickets, and began the climb to this colourful, whimsical, and somewhat kitschy construction set atop a hill in the Sintra Mountains.
Though Pena Palace’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, what you see today dates from the 19th century, with construction of the current castle completed in 1854.
You may think that this place looks like a mish-mash of different styles, and that’s because Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle, that was influenced by Gothic, Manueline, Moorish and Renaissance architecture.
The commission for this castle was given to a German amateur architect, and the King’s only request was that “this palace should reflect an opera” - whatever that means.
The tour of the interior of the palace followed a carpeted-route that guided us through a chapel, bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms, and a kitchen - all decorated with historical furniture to reflect how it would have looked when the Portuguese royal family lived here before their escape to Brazil during the revolution.
Then we stopped for one more glimpse of the surrounding hills, and it was time to head back down.
And yes, that’s all we did in Sintra that day: ate lunch, rode a bus, and visited one palace. We’re not kidding about maybe coming here for 2-3 days, because there’s way more to cover than you can on a day trip!
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.
