I'm so excited to be in Sri Lanka, an island paradise just south of India. Sri Lanka is home to some delicious food, rich culture and exciting wildlife. I can't wait to share with you my 10-day journey around the south of this beautiful island.
One thing I can say for sure is that 10 days just isn't long enough to explore the island! I felt like I only had a fleeting glimpse of what Sri Lanka has to offer. I know I'll be back!
In this first episode we arrive at our accommodation in Negombo, just a 20 minute drive from the airport. Our AirBnb is surrounded by lush gardens filled with fresh fruit!

Negombo boys of Sri Lanka keep football spirit alive in Qatar
Traveling to Sri Lanka is definitely an excellent choice when selecting a tropical travel destination with a lot of culture and history.
Sri Lanka, the Indian Ocean island known for its pristine beaches and sprawling tea plantations.
Sri Lanka put an enormous effort into improving safety and security and there is no reason not to consider this nation for a holiday.
In 2019 around 1.9 million people visited the island, with the majority of the visits taking place before the attacks, during the first four months of the year.
According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the top markets were India, the UK, China, Germany, and Australia.
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has set a target of generating revenues worth $10 billion through tourism by 2025, a goal that seems quite ambitious at the moment, even as Colombo’s beaches lie vacant.
Sri Lanka offers visa-free entry to get tourists to make the destination their choice for a vacation.
Beyond the shores of Jetwing Beach, a world of adventures is waiting to be discovered. Be it over land or underwater, Negombo serves as a convenient base to explore a number of unique destinations that showcase the diverse heritage of our tropical isle.
While Negombo itself hosts a number of cultural and historical sites, it is also conveniently located between two of Sri Lanka’s capitals. The current capital of Colombo is found just half an hour away and is the urban heart of our island complete with the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city. Dambadeniya, on the other hand, is an ancient capital located further east from our home, with a ruined palace alongside other relics left behind as its legacy.
Closer to home, the Angurukaramulla Temple found on the outskirts of Negombo also features a large Buddha statue with a number of ancient murals and a ruined library that dates back over 300 years. Negombo however, as a northwestern hub of commercial activity, continues to be one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent fishing villages. Beyond its preservation of colonial artifacts such as the Dutch Fort, Negombo is also home to the celebrated Lellama Fish Market, which sells some of the finest seafood you can find in Sri Lanka.
The waters of Negombo’s coastline are also known to be exciting as they are adventurous, with not only the exotic Duwa Reef available for a colorful diving experience but also the Kudapaduwa shipwreck and the sunken Royal Air Force Aircraft in the seas off Katuneriya. Alternatively, the resident waters of our family at Jetwing Lagoon host a professional water sports center for adrenalin-filled jet-ski and boat rides among other exciting aquatic activities upon the inland waters of Negombo.
Finally, for the birding enthusiasts, Jetwing Beach also offers excursions to the open aviaries of Muthurajawela’s mangroves and the Anawilundawa Sanctuary to spot a number of species both endemic and migratory, frolic in our tropical island habitats.

Next, I headed to Dambulla by using public transport. It is a fun experience and the best way to explore this beautiful country. I have given my best advice based on my experience and I hope you find it useful.

In this episode David travels for over 24 hours until he finally reaches the Island nation of Sri Lanka, right off the southern tip of India. Here he meets up with his new guide that will be taking him around the country over the next 12 days. After leaving the airport they make their way to eat some authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. Later they make their way to the fish market at Negombo which is the largest fish market in all of Sri Lanka, here David gets to see the process of drying fish like tuna and sardines, before making their way to the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

Beach Clean Up 2014
Sri Lanka is a beautiful island surrounded by endless stretches of golden beaches.
As it is our duty to keep it clean. Odel, together with its staff and volunteers joined hands to clean up the beach down the coastal lines of Mount Lavinia. And it was a super success. Everyone was in their element, cleaning a stretch of close to 1 kilometer for 2 ½ hours. This short video clip marks this day and serves the purpose of bringing up memories from years to come.

Moment of explosion at Sri Lanka's Kingsbury Hotel caught on CCTV
Close-circuit television footage from Kingsbury Hotel in Sri Lanka's Colombo shows the exact moment of the blast on Easter Sunday. The CCTVs captured the suicide bomber checking into the hotel a day earlier. He can be seen exiting his room on Easter morning and minutes later the cameras capture the explosion. 253 people were killed in bomb blasts in churches and hotels across the island nation. The Sri Lankan government believes that a local extremist group National Thowheeth Jamaath is behind the attack, while ISIS has also claimed responsibility.

First ever day in ASIA // SRI LANKA
First ever day in Asia, I was travelling from Sydney, Australia to Colombo, Sri Lanka then spent my first day in Sri Lanka around Negombo. I went to the beach and met a teacher with some students who were learning english they took me out for lunch and we had a classic Sri Lankan dinner which was very nice.
