Underwater Archaeology in the DR
Indiana University invited European scholar, Chloe Marechal, and I out to the Dominican Republic to take part in their Living Museums of the Sea project. Incredible history from the time when Columbus was making his first contact with the New World. The crew from IU are a great bunch and are fighting to protect not only the history but the marine life in the DR. To learn more about the project, visit
Caño Hondo Eco Lodge and Taino Caves - Southeast Dominican Republic Road Trip 2015
On our first road trip exploring the Southeast region of the Dominican Republic, the team decided to stay at the Caño Hondo Eco Lodge to explore the Taino Caves. We would definitely stay at Caño Hondo on our next visit to the region and we highly recommend you check it out on your next DR adventure..
The Caño Hondo Eco Lodge is an attractive, yet rustic resort with natural pools, cozy accommodations and an attentive staff. There is plenty to do at the Lodge, but we chose to take a small boat out to the nearby Taino indian caves to look at the many petroglyphs decorating the walls of the caves since the 15th century. As you might recall from your history, the Taino indians were the principal inhabitants of this region when Columbus arrived in 1492. Unfortunately the Taino populations were quickly wiped out by infectious diseases introduced by the Spanish colonists. By 1518 a smallpox epidemic had killed 90% of the Taino indians. By mid 1500s less than 500 survivors remained.
There is a lot of Taino history evident in this area, as in other parts of the Dominican Republic, and a visit to the Caño Hondo Eco Lodge and the Taino Caves makes for a very interesting side trip as you explore the Southeast coast of the Dominican Republic.
