CALA SAN VICENTE in PEDALO

Cala Sant Vicenc is a small village located on northern end of the Spanish island of Majorca, one of the country's top tourist destinations. The island itself has a long and varied history, beginning in the middle of the 15th Century when the island became integrated into the newly formed kingdom of Spain, this after a rebellion of Majorca's farming population against the kingdom failed. In the next few hundred years the island was invaded several times by Moorish tribes from Northern Africa, prompting the building of many large fortification walls and towers on the island, parts of which can still be seen there today in spite of later efforts to remove them. The people of Majorca also fought intensely against invasions by Napoleon's army and by pirates until the late 19th Century when conditions there finally settled.
Remaining a neutral state during World War II, Spain and the island of Majorca became a refuge for Germans trying to escape the War. The arrival of the Germans, and other Europeans, on the island would eventually lead to its being discovered and developed as a tourist destination. During the 1960's and 70's many hotels and resorts were built there, giving Majorca a much needed economic boost.
Today the people of Majorca enjoy the highest per capita income in Spain, which comes in spite of a rash of disastrous fires on the island in the 1990's and measures taken since to protect its natural resources from the damages of too much tourism. The economic boost in the area has also led to a rebirth of the arts and literature among Majorca's people.
