Gruissan is a commune in the Aude department in southern France. in the region Occitan. Gruissan inhabitants are called the Gruissanais.
Gruissan is a town, a seaside resort and a town of Lion Gulf located in the urban area of Narbonne , between massive Clape and the Mediterranean Sea . The village, between the pond Gruissan and pond Grazel, consists of streets flowing around a large block of limestone on which lie the remains of an ancient castle , the tower Barbarossa . The village is a circulade. Several extensions of the village are remarkable: Gruissan-Plage built on the lido between the pond Grazel of the sea, the resort and the marina, the village of fishermen of the Pond of 'Ayrolle . The island of St. Martin separates the village from the Ayrolle Pond, it is home to the fishing village of the pond on the south shore, a few vineyards and salt marshes of St. Martin in 'East. Similarly on the part of the massive Clape located in the town, the habitat is limited to rare scattered areas. The main lakes of the town of Gruissan are the pond Ayrolle and pond Campignol that the extends northeast, the pond Gruissan , pond Grazel which gives access to the marina basin and pond Mateille.
Gruissan is connected only by sea and roads that allow to go directly to Narbonne (East and West) and Narbonne-Plages. In Gruissan, the climate is Mediterranean and very windy especially in winter.
The gruissannaise economy today is primarily dedicated to tourism and especially during the summer season. The town was however able to maintain and upgrade, thanks to the latter, traditional activities such as the vine that has the appellation Vin de Pays des Coteaux the Aude coast . The winery cooperative Gruissan markets all year round wine red, white, and rosé wines produced by winemakers Gruissanais well as local and regional products (olive oil, rosemary honey, ...). The salt was once the white gold of Gruissan saunière this activity and the production of salt and sea salt is retained on the pond Ayrolle and Ile Saint Martin , where there is a museum dedicated saline Gruissan. Traditional fishing activities and oyster farming have remained but to a lesser extent.
