Tango has enjoyed a huge revival during Argentina's current political and economic crisis. This film examines La Confiteria Ideal, a Buenos Aires dance hall where fervent devotees of tango flock to escape everyday life.
Tango facts:
* Tango developed in the 19th century among the immigrants who reached Argentina from Africa and Europe
* The music and dance steps combine African influence with rural Argentine traditions - which in turn reflect both Spanish and native South American origins
* Tango was first danced in Europe during the first decade of the 20th century
* It probably reached France, first through the port of Marseille, where Argentine sailors would dance with the local girls
* The fall of the military junta in Argentina in 1983 began a tango renaissance in Buenos Aires

La Confiteria Ideal Tango Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina - March 20, 2015
While on tour with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl in South America, I took a few moments to drop by the world famous La Confitería Ideal Tango Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Had a nice visit but it was not the fiery passionate tango dancing I was expecting!!

Confiteria ideal, Buenos Aires - A Tango Milonga 2 am, Wednesday morning
Attended a milonga (social dance) at one of the oldest Tango dance halls in Buenos Aires, Confiteria ideal. Cath and I were on our first trip to Argentina and wanted to check out the tango scene. This crumbling art noveau style venue lived up to all expectations. I shot this on my iPhone so it's a little rough around the edges audio-visually - but you get the idea.
It reminded me of that great scene from Bernardo Bertolucci's film Last Tango In Paris where Marlon Brando corners Maria Schneider in a similar tango dance hall which had seen better days! Regardless, if you head to Buenos Aires - definitely seek out this place!
