Looming over Cefalù, this imposing rocky crag was once the site of an Arab citadel, superseded in 1061 by the Norman castle whose ruins still crown the summit. To reach the top, follow signs for Tempio di Diana, taking Vicolo Saraceni off Corso Ruggero or Via Giuseppe Fiore off Piazza Garibaldi. The 30- to 45-minute route climbs the Salita Saraceni, a winding staircase, through three tiers of city walls before emerging onto rock-strewn upland slopes with spectacular coastal views.
The windswept summit appears a suitable home for the race of giants that are said to have been Sicily's first inhabitants. There are stunning views of the town below and the ruined 4th-century BC Tempio di Diana provides a quiet and romantic getaway for young lovers.
La rocca di Cefalù is the beautiful mountain in Cefalù. Evidence of human activity in Cefalù dates back to prehistoric times. In the 5th or 4th century BC, the sacred megalithic building known as the Temple of Diana was built over an existing Cistern associated with the worship of the waters.
After the fall of the roman Empire, the people moved up on the mountain because it gave them better protection from the pirates (first the Vandals, then the Saracens). During the Bysantine period (7th-8th century AD) fortification walls and several buildings were built (near Church of St Anna). In 857, however, Cefalù fell to the Saracens.

[EN] The Cathedral-Basilica of Cefalù is a Roman Catholic church in Cefalù (Sicily, Italy). The dominant figure of the decorative scheme is the bust of the Christ Pantokrator, portrayed with a hand raised in Benediction on the semi-dome of the apse.
Otherwise, the Palermo artist Michele Canzoneri has installed 72 controversial, modern, abstract stained glass windows based on episodes from the Old and New Testaments.

La figura dominante è quella del Cristo Pantocratore che, dall'alto dell’abside, tiene uniti da un lato indice e medio, indicanti la natura divina e umana di se stesso, e dall’altro mignolo, anulare e pollice congiunti, indicanti il mistero della Trinità. Con la sinistra regge il Vangelo aperto sulle cui pagine si legge, in greco e latino: «Io sono la luce del mondo, chi segue me non vagherà nelle tenebre ma avrà la luce della vita». Inoltre, l'artista contemporaneo MIchele Canzoneri ha installato 72 vetrate che rappresentano scene del vecchio e del nuovo testamento. Patrimonio dell'umanità UNESCO dal 3 luglio 2015.

Cefalù is a coastal city in northern Sicily, Italy. It’s known for its Norman cathedral, a 12th-century fortress-like structure with elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers. Nearby, the Mandralisca Museum is home to archaeological exhibits and a picture gallery with a portrait by Antonello da Messina. The beaches of Mazzaforno and Settefrati lie to the west.
Beautiful Cefalù offers a rare combination of tourist attractions: one of Sicliy's finest beaches side-by-side with one of its greatest Arab-Norman architectural masterpieces. The squares, streets and churches of this medieval town are so postcard-pretty that it's no wonder director Giuseppe Tornatore chose to set parts of his much-loved film Cinema Paradiso here.
Cefalù is notable for beautiful sunsets, unpretentious charm, and a very appealing blend of ingredients for an Italian seaside holiday. Sandy beaches, a picturesque historic town on a rocky headland, some high culture in the shape of a fine Norman cathedral, decent transport links, Sicilian food and sunshine all add up to make the town one of Italy's most attractive seaside destinations.
Unlike the modern beach resorts and developed fishing villages which dot Italy's coast, Cefalù has some grandeur in its past - it was important enough that one of Sicily's Norman rulers, Roger II, would build a glorious cathedral here. While its later history was less distinguished, there are some substantial and elegant buildings in the town, as well as reminders of Sicily's varied influences, not just Norman and Byzantine, but also Arab, Spanish and finally Italian. Nowadays tourism is a big and profitable industry here, and the modern town spreads out along the coast from the centro storico (historic centre).
One of Cefalù's prime magnets for tourists is the sandy beach stretching alongside the town. It is very inviting, though visitors should be prepared to find the sands busy in the peak summer months of July and August, and partially occupied by fee-charging beach establishments.
Set in the medieval district, Cefalù's other great tourist attraction is the town's Duomo, a handsome and imposing two-towered Norman cathedral. Begun in 1131, this mighty church dominates the rooftops of the centro storico. The building's interior is decorated with lovely mosaics created by twelfth-century Byzantine artists: a large Christ Pantocrator on a gold background dominating the apse, above the Madonna, archangels and Apostles. These gleaming mosaics are one of Sicily's greatest sights; if you want more, take a trip to Monreale, outside Palermo. Alongside the church is its restored twelfth-century cloister (admission fee), which is an atmospheric space lined with double columns topped by curious capitals depicting an odd range of scenes, from Noah's ark to strange contortionists.
Towering above the Duomo and the town centre is the massive crag called the Rocca. It's a steep ascent to the top of the hill (take a bottle of water and don't attempt the climb in very hot weather) but it's well worth the effort. Near the top you'll reach the evocative ruins of the so-called 'Tempio di Diana' (temple of Diana), an ancient megalithic stone structure which was given a modernisation in the 5th-century BC in the classical Greek style. Around the summit of the Rocca are superb views and various bits of old fortifications, including a stretch of (reconstructed) battlements.
Back in town visitors can admire the picturesque harbour, alleys and medieval buildings. A Saracen wash-house, the Lavatoio, is another sight worth seeing, as is the medieval Osterio Magno, the remaining part of a large 13th-century palace. A rocky path winds along the shore below the city's seafacing walls, and it is quite an adventure to clamber along and explore.
An important stop on any cultural itinerary is Cefalù's town museum, the Museo Mandralisca. The collection is neither huge nor demanding, but it includes several gems, including a portrait by Antonello da Messina and a striking vase from the fourth century BC decorated with a fishmonger chopping a tuna fish; a sight you may well see today in Sicily's fish markets. The museum's latest opening hours and admission fee are listed on the official website

The Cathedral-Basilica of Cefalù is a Roman Catholic church in Cefalù, Sicily, Italy. The cathedral was erected in 1131 in the Norman architectural style, as the island of Sicily had been conquered by the Normans in 1091.
According to tradition, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Saviour by the King of Sicily, Roger II, after he escaped from a storm to land on the city's beach. The building has a fortress-like character and, seen from a distance, it dominates the skyline of the surrounding medieval town. It made a powerful statement of the Norman presence.
The Cathedral was built in an area of ancient and continuing population, as attested by the findings of a Roman road and a Palaeo-Christian mosaic. Construction began in 1131, the apse mosaics were begun in 1145, and the sarcophagi that Roger II provided for his tomb and that of his wife were put in place the same year.
After 1172 the church suffered a period of decline. In 1215 Frederick II of Hohenstaufen moved the two sarcophagi to the Cathedral of Palermo. Construction of the cathedral was resumed soon after, the façade being completed in 1240. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1267 by Rodolphe de Chevriêres, Bishop of Albano.
The cathedral is preceded by a large terraced parvise (called turniali), which was originally a cemetery. According to tradition, it was created with earth brought from Jerusalem, having the peculiarity of causing the rapid mummification of the corpses.
The façade is characterized by two large Norman towers, with mullioned windows, each surmounted by a small spire added in the 15th century. Each spire is different: one has a square plan surrounded by flame-shaped merlons, the latter symbolizing the Papal authority and the mitre; the other has an octagonal plan and Ghibelline merlons, symbolizing the Royal and temporal power.
The 15th-century portico has three arches, the two outer being pointed, supported by four columns and vaulting ribs. Under the portico is the Porta Regum (Kings' Door), with a finely decorated marble portal flanked by wall paintings.
The cathedral has a cloister which may be entered from within the church. The arcade has pointed arches, each of which rests on thin paired columns. While the form is not unlike those of Spanish and some French cloisters, the composite capitals of the paired columns are distinctly Byzantine in their motifs, having creatures such as lions and eagles that are mirror-images, facing each other as in many of the decorative carvings of Ravenna.
Of the original painted decoration, a figure of Urban V of the late 14th century, on a column on the left aisle, and a Madonna Enthroned of the 15th century, in the left arm of the transept, remain. The basilica houses several funerary monuments, including a late Antique sarcophagus, a medieval one, and the notable sepulchre of the Bishop Castelli of the 18th century.

Cefalù
Cefalù è un località costiera della Sicilia settentrionale. Cefalù ha una popolazione di circa 15.000 abitanti, conosciuta soprattutto per la sua vocazione al turismo.
Il paesino di Cefalù si sviluppa attorno al duomo che ne è l'emblema, ma molto caratteristiche sono le stradine ricoperte da basole in calcare e pietre provenienti dal mare.
Lungo queste stradine troviamo tanti piccoli negozi, gelatiere e soprattutto ristoranti con terrazzo sul mare.
Per la Sicilia è un piccolo vanto, Cefalù dovrebbe diventare per i siciliani un modello turistico da copiare in tutta l'isola e anche da migliorare.
Poiché la Sicilia dispone di tante località meno note al turismo di massa ma altrettanto belle!

Il Duomo di Cefalù (Palermo, SICILY)
La Cattedrale di Cefalù venne fondata, insieme alla relativa diocesi, da re Ruggero II nel 1131. Essa è il risultato di travagliate vicende architettoniche, per via delle quali l’edificio non venne mai realizzato secondo il progetto originario. L’edificio si erge sull’alto di una scalinata costruita nel 1851 ed è preceduto da un ampio sagrato a terrazzo che svolgeva la funzione di cimitero. Il prospetto è caratterizzato da due possenti torri, alleggerite da eleganti bifore e monofore e sormontate da cuspidi piramidali aggiunte nel Quattrocento: una a pianta quadrata l’altra a pianta ottagonale. Nella parte superiore (ultimata nel 1240 ca.) è ornato da una decorazione ad archetti ciechi e ad archi intrecciati, interrotti da una finestra centrale; in quella inferiore, presenta un portale marmoreo scolpito con motivi figurati e decorativi, preceduto da un portico a tre arcate a sesto acuto realizzato del 1471 dal magister lombardo Ambrogio da Como. L’interno basilicale è a tre navate scandite da 16 colonne di granito (8 per lato) che sostengono slanciati archi a sesto acuto a doppia ghiera. Le coperture sono costituite da soffitti lignei, di cui quello centrale conserva resti della originaria decorazione pittorica con motivi vegetali e figurativi di carattere profano, realizzati da maestranze islamiche. L’abside centrale, le pareti del presbiterio e la volta costolonata del coro sono rivestite da mosaici realizzati da maestranze bizantine tra il regno di Ruggero II e il regno di Guglielmo I. Le figure allungate e ieratiche sono disposte in processione secondo un preciso principio gerarchico: nel catino dell’abside centrale, la figura del Cristo Pantocratore benedicente; nella fascia sottostante, la Vergine e quattro Arcangeli; nelle due zone inferiori, ai lati della finestra ogivale, i Dodici Apostoli. Sulle due pareti del bema, figure di Santi e Profeti, allineati su quattro fasce sovrapposte; nella volta a crociera, Angeli e Serafini. Tutte le figure sono accompagnate da scritte, in greco o in latino, che indicano il nome del personaggio. Annesso al fianco settentrionale alla Cattedrale è il chiostro del XII sec: a pianta quadrata, è circondato per due lati da un portico con arcate ogivali poggianti su capitelli figurati e istoriati, sorretti a loro volta da colonne binate.
