Our Fantastic Adventure in Reims With G.H. Mumm
One of our fondest adventures of 2018 was the “Day in Reims” hosted by G.H. Mumm. It was a fast, yet fun-filled day spent learning about the history, process, and future of their prestigious Champagne. The day began with a quick train ride from Paris and as soon as we arrived in Reims we were escorted to Maison Mumm where all the magic truly happens. This is where we met with the team we would be spending the day with and everyone got to know each other over some fresh coffee before our guide, Giacomo took the lead and began the tour of the house...
Read all about it:
G.H. Mumm, Reims, Champagne-Ardenne, France, Europe
It was founded by three brothers, Jacobus, Gottlieb and Phillip Mumm, German winemakers from the Rhine valley and G. Heuser and Friedrich Giesler on March 1, 1827 as P. A. Mumm Giesler et C°. P.A. stood for the initials of Mumm senior (Peter Arnold Mumm), a successful wine merchant from Solingen. Mumm's label is famous for its red ribbon (Cordon Rouge), patterned after and resembling the French Grand Cordon of the Légion d'Honneur. The French confiscated all of the Mumm's property, although they had lived in Champagne for almost a century before World War I, because they had never become French citizens. The company is owned by Pernod Ricard. G.H. Mumm has been an official sponsor of F1 racing since 2000 and provides the champagne bottles for the podium celebrations after each race. Mumm Napa is one of California's méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine producers, a joint venture between the G.H. Mumm & Cie and Joseph E Seagram & Sons. The location at Napa Valley was founded by Guy Deveaux, who determined Napa's long hot days and cold nights to be ideal for producing the right amount of acidity and ripeness. In 1964, René Lalou, the head of the Mumm Champagne House, and Léonard Foujita (1886–1968), a Japanese painter belonging to the Ecole de Paris school of art, decided to build a chapel in the gardens belonging to the Champagne house. Begun in 1965, the Foujita chapel was entirely designed by Foujita in the romanesque style, who drew the plans and designed the ironwork, stained glass and sculptures. He supervised the building and interior decoration. The chapel is decorated with frescos, remarkable for their freshness, soft lines and curves inspired by oriental art, in colours of blues, golds, yellows and greens, as well as very subdued reds verging on brown. The chapel was consecrated on 1 October 1966 and handed over to the City of Reims on 18 October 1966. The chapel was designated an historic monument in 1992. Foujita also gave G.H. Mumm a fresco depicting “The Virgin in the Vines”. The rose featured in the painting became the cuvée’s emblem and appears on the metallic cap on top of the cork of the rose Champagne.

CAVES POMMERY in Reims, France
Visiting Caves Pommery in Reims is an unique combination of history of Domaine Pommery and innovative art exhibitions.
In July 1868, Madame Pommery launched a construction project, which transformed the chalk quarries into wine cellars and a giant subterranean town: 18 kilometres of corridors, galleries and wine cellars. Gustave Navlet adorned the plazas with immense bas-relief sculptures.

Reims, France, including the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims
We visit the magnificent 800-year-old Reims cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece where the Kings of France were crowned, before some free time perhaps to wander around this delightful city with its grand squares and elegant shopping arcades.
Reims is famous for two very important things. It is the capital of the Champagne Region and its center is marked by the cathedral of coronations. The city is named for Saint Rémi, the Bishop of Reims, who in the year 498 baptized Clovis, the King of the Franks, in an act that gave birth to the French Nation. Starting in 815 Reims' famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame was the location of the French King's coronations until 1825.
It is considered by many to be the most perfect Gothic church in the world. It was almost completely destroyed in the battles of World War I, but remained almost untouched in WWII, and has since been completely restored. From Louis VII to Charles X, the kings of France made it a point of honor to be crowned in the city where the history of the country really began.
Beneath the town and its suburbs, there are endless caves for champagne. Champagne Cellars of Reims include Maison de Pommery, Maxims, Mumm, Piper-Heidsieck, Ruinart, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin.

Located at 12 Rue du Temple, Reims, France, Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the oldest ‘modern’ champagne houses. Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Mulron, Veuve Clicquot is credited with making champagne the wine of choice for the bourgeoisie and royalty. The 1811 Comet Vintage of Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the first modern champagne vintage.
The son of Philippe Clicquot-Mulron married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. He died in 1805 leaving his bride in charge of the Company. Madame Clicquot, the first woman to take over a champagne house, continued the innovations in champagne production instituted by her Father-In-Law and Husband. She is credited with the biggest breakthrough in champagne production that led to its mass production, the rising rack. The Veuve Clicquot is sad to have made the first rosé champagne, and Madame Clicquot receives the accolades for perfecting it.
Madame Clicquot working in tandem with her cellar master, Antoine de Muller, immersed herself in the production of champagne and was a marketing expert in her time. She saw to it that the royal courts throughout Europe had access to her champagnes making it a sought-after wine across the continent. To this day Veuve Clicquot is distinguished by its yellow label, the same label that kings and queens recognized.
In 1987 the Veuve Clicquot brand of quality champagne was purchased by the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group.
