La Manche: A Settlement in Ruin
La Manche was a community on the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland between Cape Broyle and Tors Cove in a small inlet surrounded by steep hills. The community was first settled in the 1840s, apparently by a George Melvin. There was a small Roman Catholic church and a school located in the community, as well as a suspension bridge which crossed the inlet. At the time of Confederation in 1949, La Manche had a population of 54; by 1961, following the closure of the school, this had fallen to 25. La Manche was abandoned after a winter storm on 28 January 1966 which demolished the community's network of wharves and stages and collapsed the suspension bridge.
The remains of the community are now incorporated within the boundaries of La Manche Provincial Park. In 1999, the East Coast Trail Association rebuilt the suspension bridge across La Manche inlet, connecting the park trail system to the East Coast Trail.

Desolate southern tip of the Avalon peninsula, Newfoundland
Desolate southern tip of the Avalon peninsula, Newfoundland. You can't hear me over the wind, but I'm pointing out that cars are so infrequent that I could stand there with the camcorder and do a leisurely 360 degree view without any fear of getting run over.
The whales and waterfalls of Newfoundland's coast
Cruising in a small boat is a unique way to tour Newfoundland's coastline. Towering sea stacks and deep caves are among the natural wonders to see around Bay Bulls, about 30 minutes south of St. John's. (Aug. 24)

Lamanche Settlement
Lamanche Settlement was a fishing settlement established in 1840 with a population of about 50 people haas been abandoned for years now, but it has now become part of the east coast trail. We decide that it was the most hosptiable spot to set up a couple of tents and stay the night. We have some great weather the first day and an awesome evening for a fire and some laughs. No gear covered in this video just a trip in the woods for some time away from the city life. We load up our packs with some extra weight to simulate what we would be carrying for the Terra Nova trip and try our tents out for the 2nd time. Come across and Osprey which we thought was a hawk or and eagle. Was a comfortable night and we slept well until the rain started which you will see and hear about in part 2. Stay tuned for more.
