Barcelona Merce Festival opening Parade
Barcelona's Mercè Festival is the city's biggest entertainment event happening every year on the last weekend of September during four days. There are several hundred events going on, lots of music, dance, cultural activities, human towers, with most events happening outdoors on the streets and plazas, all free fun for everybody. And in this episode we will focus on the grand parade that opens the festivities.

Human castle collapses during La Mercè Festival in Barcelona
Brave athletes were attempting to create a pyramid of bodies - one of the traditions of the La Mercè festival in the Spanish city. But as the final two people clamber to the top, those below lose their balance and the tower falls apart. Spectators watch in horror as eleven people balancing near the top of the human pyramid plunge onto the people supporting them below.

What a great weekend in Barcelona September 22, 2017. So much fun at La Merce Festival, over 600 acts and events. See the opening parade of demons and drummers, the fire run, castellers - human towers, and the closing ceremony fireworks show and the magic fountains - over 500 thousand people. One week before the vote referendum for catalonia to susceed from Spain.
La Mercé Festival is dedicated to the patron saint of Barcelona, the Virgin of Mercy. The Saracens and the Turkish were aggressively attacking the Spanish coast and taking hundreds of prisoners to be used as slaves in their territories. In 1218 Saint Peter Nolasco, a resident of Barcelona, would buy these men's freedom while he was praying to the Virgin Mary to shed some light upon him.The Virgin of Mercy appeared and inspired him to found a religious order, known as the Mercedarians, whose purpose was to free the prisoners. King James I of Aragon had had the same revelation and together, they started the Order of Our Lady of Mercy and saved about 300,000 captives throughout history. Many friars became martyrs, sacrificing their lives to save prisoners.

Barcelona Fire Run, Dragons and Devils, Correfoc at the Merce Festival
Barcelona's wildest and crazy event is the fire run parade with devils, dragons, explosions, fire and fun -- thousands of people celebrating during the biggest festival of the year, the Mercè Festival.
Sparks and flames are flying as people run around shooting fireworks and pounding squads of drummers stir up the booming beat in salsa rhythm, fun for all.

The festival La Mercè, which is held in honour of the patron saint la Mercè (the Virgin of Mercy) on September 24 each year is the Fiesta Mayor - the main festival - of Barcelona. It is the largest and most colourful festival in the city's festival calendar and the absolute climax of Barcelona's event schedule.

Barcelona’s Las Fiestas de la Mercè 2019: Procession of Our Lady of Mercy
The Fiesta de la Mercè 2019 falls every 24th of September in honour of our Lady of Mercy, the city’s patron saint. It started with a procession of the Virgin of Mercy from the Basilica de la Mercè to the Barcelona Cathedral followed by a Holy Mass. More big religious and cultural events to follow on the 20th until the 24th of the month.
