La Place des Canotiers, Quebec, Canada - Crystal Fountains
General Contractor: Pomerleau
Landscape Architect: Daoust Lestage Inc. and ABCP
MEP Engineer: CIMA
Aquatic Designer and Fountain Supply: Soucy Aquatik
Water Feature Products Manufacturer: Crystal Fountains Inc.
Inspired by the 19th century wooden docks that once lined the shores of the St Lawrence River, connecting the water to Old Quebec, Place des Canotiers was designed to recreate this historic space with a contemporary flare. As both a beloved local landmark and a future venue for international cruise passengers, this picturesque public plaza entertains visitors with award-winning artwork, luscious greenery, bike paths and interactive water features. The name of the public square was chosen by residents through the competition 'Une Place à Nommer' which was held in the spring of 2015. “Place des Canotiers” hearkens back to a key feature of Quebec’s culture - river crossings by canoe, particularly in winter and into Québec.
Designed to restore distinction to an area previously used as an open-air parking lot, Place des Canotiers is now the largest public space in Old Quebec with nearly 20,000 square metres accessible to residents and visitors. The textured cobblestone recalls history by mimicking the gentle undulations of flowing water in an effort to revitalize the area and reconnect Quebec to the waterway. Réal Lestage, principal designer, was particularly enthusiastic about the success of the project. It's an absolutely amazing site. We have Old Québec, Frontenac castle, the Dufferin terrace on one side of Dalhousie Street, and on the other side we have the St. Lawrence estuary from Île d'Orléans.*
Passersby were equally delighted with the result, while highlighting the enormous contrast with the former Dalhousie parking lot. “C’est magnifique! Je suis très contente, c’est une grande fierté d’avoir ça,”* exclaimed Diane Lamontagne, Quebec resident. “Les gens se sont déjà approprié la place. Ils sont curieux. Il y a des enfants dans les jeux d’eau, et les gens prennent énormément de photos,”* said Anne-Marie Gauthier, spokesperson for the National Capital Commission of Quebec, the site manager.
The water features play a huge role in tying the space together. With custom niched jets and LEDs from Crystal, visitors are able to enjoy an exciting mixture of interactive family fun and gorgeous synchronized shows. After dark the area is illuminated with elegant white lighting, complementing the swaying streams of water, the river nearby, and Chateau Frontenac glowing atop the hill. As if this area couldn't get any better, there are also 74 misting jets installed throughout the paths and plaza. The misting nozzles are activated every hour, covering the riverside in an elusive veil of refreshing fog.
More than ever before, Old Québec and the riverfront are being harmoniously melded to the immense satisfaction of visitors, tourists, passersby and city strollers seeking a blend of beauty and tranquility.

Chabad rabbis in Quebec look out for Jewish prisoners
One doesn't usually associate Chabad with prison, but alongside a host of other roles in the Jewish community, rabbis in the Canadian city of Quebec have taken it upon themselves to visit and care for Jewish inmates in the province.
Not only do the rabbis look out for the Jewish prisoners while they are serving their sentences, but they also provide them with a sense of community, food, a bed and structure after they are released, to help keep them on the right track and prevent them from returning to jail.
I got four rabbis that I can call my personal friends, says Martin, who was released after forty years in prison. He remarks that the rabbi of federal and provincial prisoners in Quebec, Zushe Silberstein, inducted him as an extension of the rabbi's family. Martin added that he is glad to be at a Jewish halfway house.

Exquisite Quebec
Funiculaire ride in Vieux Quebec...
Montreal City Video Guide | Expedia
Montreal is located in the middle of the St. Lawrence river in southwest Quebec. It is Canada’s second largest city and has the largest population of French speakers outside of Paris.
Here is a Canadian city with a French soul, a big heart and a very hip attitude. A city that enchants visitors with an old-world charm and an unpretentious love of good food and festivals.
The first Europeans to arrive here were from France and while the British later claimed ownership, an elegant sophistication lingers like a perfume.
Order un cafe, stroll the cobblestone streets of the Old City and soak up the history and architecture of the area. Some of the buildings here date back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest urban areas in North America.
Discover Montreal’s famous food scene. Try Poutine - or, follow your nose to one of the city’s many wood fired ovens and try a real Montreal bagel.
Montreal is also thoroughly hip. The city hosts more than 100 festivals throughout the year but even if you happen to be here between events, there is always something cool going on.
And of course, you can’t leave town without a trip to La Ronde, the city’s beloved amusement park.
As the sun sets on your adventures, head back downtown and discover Montreal after dark. Enjoy cool jazz, smoky blues or wind down with something a little more quirky.
European…Canadian….traditional…. cutting edge. Montreal is all of these things but it is also so much more.
With its french past and funky present, Montreal is a city with a certain je ne sais quoi. A flavour and a feeling that is hard to define but very easy to love.
