Paddle Steamers of Switzerland - PS La Suisse - Lake Geneva
It’s difficult to choose my favourite Swiss Paddle Steamer. They all have their different characteristics which make them so individual. However. if I had to make a choice then I would have to say PS La Swiss. She was the first Swiss Paddler I had ever travelled on. From the moment I stepped on board I felt overjoyed to be on such a beautiful ship. Everything was so clinical and spotless. At that time she was approaching her one hundredth birthday since construction by Sulzer Brothers by Winterthur back in 1910. At 700 metres in length and a displacement of 437 tons she is one of the largest Paddle steamers in Switzerland and remains the CGN Company Flagship.
Lausanne to Montreux Switzerland by Steam Paddle Boat
Sail across lake Geneva in this video. The lake is situated on the north side of the alps between Switzerland and France. Lake Geneva is remarkable because it is the largest lake along the Rhone. On this boat ride from Lausanne to Motreux you will see many vineyards. The Lavaux, Vineyard Terraces span 30 km on the north shores of Lake Geneva. Vineyards animate the landscape between Chateau de Chillion all the way to Lausanne. Additionally, they fill the space on the hillsides between the mountain villages and the lake. Some of these grape vines can date back to the 11th century when the Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries governed this region. The vineyards have always been an important way to link people to the environment as well as a staple economic resource. Along this boat tour you will also see Lavaux vineyards, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These vineyards are strictly protected and preserved by the canton.
Lausanne, the starting point for this cruise across lake Geneva, resides in the French speaking portion of Switzerland. Lausanne and Geneva are about 62 kilometers apart. Located near the Jura Mountains (to the north-west) and on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is home to just under 150,000 people. Lausanne values international sports. It is even consider the Olympic Capital by the International Olympic Committee operates there. Additionally, there are about 55 other sports centered organizations that are based in Lausanne.
Next, this boat travels past Pully, which is suburb of Lausanne. It is located at the foot of the Lavaux vineyards between Vevey and Montreux.
Then you will see Lutry, located in the Lavaux-Oron.
Cully, is the next town. Its average altitude is 387 m. The village is located in the Lavaux vineyards. It sits atop small crag that protrudes into the Lake Geneva cape. Dezaley is a popular white wine from this region.
You will also see Rivaz a small village with a population of only about 350 people.
You pass by Vevey next, which is still in the French speaking region of Switzerland. Headquartered here is the famous brand Nestlé (founded in 1867). Charlie Chaplin, British American actor, even lived here in his later life. Known as one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera,” Vevey offers some awesome views of the Alpine panorama across the lake. It has a very mild climate, beautiful vineyards, and paddlewheel steamers.
The last small village passed before arriving at Montreux is Clarens, before the tour ends in Montreux. Montreux is a bit more metropolitan with about 26,000 residents.
Swiss Paddle Steamers 2018
Our annual trip to Switzerland this year took place from the 8th to the 11th July. On arrival at Geneva airport we first travelled by train to Lausanne to join the PS Montreux for a sailing to Montreux. Continuing our journey again by train to our Hotel in Interlaken; which is relatively central to visit all the Swiss Lakes.
Day 2 we set off on the wonderful narrow gauge mountain route to Luzern to join the PS Stadt Luzern to Beckenried. Then travelled back to Verkehrshaus Lido on the PS Uri, changing here for a sailing aboard PS Unterwalden to Alpstadnach, returning by train to Interlaken.
The following day we took the train to Rapperswil on Lake Zurich for a trip up to Zurich aboard PS Stadt Rapperswil. Public transport and time keeping in Switzerland is excellent and can be relied upon to make connections, so while returning to Interlaken by rail we broke our journey at Fluelen on Lake Luzern to cruise to Brunnen aboard PS Schriller.
Our final day we said farewell to Interlaken to journey back to Lake Geneva in time to take the afternoon sailing from Lausanne to Geneva on PS Simplon; ending another superb holiday steaming around the Lakes of Switzerland.

Day trip to Switzerland 05/08/11
On certain days when both flights and Steamer times on Lake Geneva coincide it is possible to fly from Bristol to Geneva and back in a day. The timetables on Friday 5th August 2011 enabled us to do this trip and to travel on three Paddle Steamers of the CGN fleet. Beginning our cruise of the west end of Lake L'eman we set off from Geneva on the PS Savoie and sailed as far as Nyon. Here we changed steamers for the PS Rhone that took us south over to the French side of the Lake for time ashore at Yvoire. After a pleasant and very interesting visit to this medieval village we boarded our third Paddle Steamer of the day, the PS Simplon that returned us in good time back to Geneva for our return flight .

Paddle Steamers of Switzerland - PS Montreux - Lake Geneva
The Lake Geneva Paddle Steamer Montreux was commissioned in 1904 and ran as a steamer until 1958 when sadly she was converted to diesel-electric power. In this condition she ran from 1961 until 1998. Following a major rebuild to her hull and superstructure she returned to service in 2001 fitted with a new engine and once again powered by steam, with engine controls directly from the bridge. It's always a delight to travel on this lovely ship particularly; to hear those distinctive exhaust beats from the engine on those wonderful summer evening Gourmet cruises between Lausanne and Yvoire.
