Entrelenguas | Entrelenguas' Teachers
Villi Lería and María Ortega talk to us about teaching Spanish as a foreign language and share their thoughts on their experience at Entrelenguas in Ronda, Spain. Thank you very much to the Charry TV network for giving us the opportunity to be a part of their educational documentary series!
Transcription:
-Hi I’m Villi !
-And I’m Maria.
-We’re teachers at Entrelenguas….so Maria, tell us. When did you realise that you wanted to be a Spanish teacher?
-When I came back from Erasmus. I did an Erasmus in Venice and I had a lot of contact with foreign languages, so after that I decided to teach Spanish. And you?
- Well, I was taking English classes, and I didn’t like the teacher much and I found it very boring. So, I thought I could do her job better than her. To prove it, I decided to become a Spanish teacher.
- And Villi, what do you like most about your job?
- What do I like the most? I love the relationship I have with the students and I love seeing the progress of someone who started classes not being able to speak a word of Spanish and after a while, this person can have a conversation with me. This is what I like the most.
- Me too. I think that when you teach a second language to someone who knows nothing about your language, progress is made very quickly. It’s rewarding as a teacher and for me, it’s the best thing about it.
- That’s great.
- And the most difficult thing?
- The hardest thing is when a student experiences a mental block in learning. When suddenly, the person stops making progress…and they don’t know how to break out of it. And you have already tried every possible way to explain it and help them understand it and they can’t…it’s frustrating.
- I agree. I also think that when you have tried a thousand different ways to teach and explain something, and you see that they still haven’t understood…especially when they or when we learn a second language, there is always a time when you stop making progress…you’re kind of frozen. So, at that moment, I think the most difficult thing when teaching someone is breaking that ice.
- And what do you think of Entrelenguas?
- I love it because the teaching is done in a way that allows you to communicate with students. We don’t use English at all…you can speak to them in Spanish from a very low level, adapting it to their needs and they understand perfectly, there are no communication problems, so I think this way of teaching is original, and in my opinion, it works very well. And you, what do you like most about Entrelenguas?
- I love Entrelenguas, the students are very integrated, they are always involved in everything we plan, everything we look for, everything we do…they always want to do things, they always have the willingness to learn everything…
- They are very keen to learn
- Yes, everything you say seems great to them, when you have an idea they participate, they help you to improve…I love our students.
- Yes, they’re the best!
- And what kind of things do you see in class?
- In what sense?
- What we study. We study vocabulary, grammar, but always in a way that allows us to communicate with the students. I like that, especially when teaching grammar, which can be boring. It’s fun.
- Yes, everything is always done in a way that allows students to participate, so that they are thinking and so they don’t get bored…
- So they can stay engaged.
- What tips would you give to aspiring teachers?
- Mine would be if you like education, if you like to be in the classroom and if you would like to be a teacher, then don’t hold back…this aspect of teaching is great, right? Everyone likes different things, but…the contact you have with so many cultures and so many different people, I really recommend that you do it because it’s lovely. It’s a great job.
- Yes, let them speak their minds, and don’t be shy in front of the students because this job is great, I like it a lot.
