MALTA - VALLETTA LA CITTA' DEI CAVALIERI - 4k
© CLAUDIO MORTINI™◊

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is 93 km from Sicily and 290 km from both Libya and Tunisia.
The Maltese archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, the largest (246 square kilometers), with capital Valletta, the islet of Comino, which is uninhabited in winter, and finally the island of Gozo.
Valletta has been elected European Capital of Culture of 2018, but for us it is and will always be the capital of post-adolescent travel, of unforgettable journeys with family in tow.
Valletta is the seat of the political and administrative life of the Republic of Malta.
Rarely a city rich in charm and history has a birth date as precise as Valletta, 1551, when Fort St. Elmo was built to defend the island. Then architects and engineers were called to consolidate the defense, at that time put in grave danger by the Ottoman attacks. With the contribution of the major sovereigns of Europe, as well as of the papacy the construction work began: 8000 men worked there. The name Valletta is due to the Grand Master of Knights of those years, Jean Parisot de la Vallette. The Knights settled in the city on March 17, 1571, the year of the battle of Lepanto.
However, the Knights did not limit themselves to building, but called first-class artists, mostly Italian, to decorate and embellish those seats that were both military and courtesan. The city is formed by a grid of orthogonal streets with a main axis made up of Republic Street. Valletta can be considered an open-air museum.
Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the New Parliament of Malta is one of the most modern buildings that are part of the Valletta city Gate project.
Two works by Caravaggio, the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the writing Saint Jerome, are found in the Co-Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.
La Valletta, Malta, Europe
Valletta is the capital of Malta, colloquially known as Il-Belt in Maltese. It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta, and the historical city has a population of 6,966. Valletta is the second southernmost capital of the EU member states after Nicosia. Valletta contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. The city is essentially Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected areas, though World War II left major scars on the city. The City of Valletta was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.
The city was named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion in 1565. The official name given by the Order of Saint John was Humilissima Civitas Valletta The Most Humble City of Valletta, or Città Umilissima in Italian. The bastions, curtains and ravelins along with the beauty of its Baroque palaces, gardens and churches, led the ruling houses of Europe to give the city its nickname Superbissima Most Proud. The Valletta peninsula has two natural harbours, Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. The Grand Harbour is Malta's major port, with unloading quays at Marsa. A cruise-liner terminal is located along the old seawall of the Valletta Waterfront that Grandmaster Manuel Pinto de Fonseca built. Valletta features a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Valletta experiences a lack of precipitation during the summer months and heavier precipitation during the winter months. Winter temperatures are moderated by the city's proximity to the sea. As a result, Valletta enjoys mild winters. Average high temperatures range from around 15 °C (59 °F) in January to about 30 °C (86 °F) in August, while average low temperatures range from around 10 °C (50 °F) in January to 22 °C (72 °F) in August. The city is on the island of Malta so it shares its early history with the island. Immediately after the end of the Siege of Malta in 1565, the Order decided to found a new city on the Xiberras peninsula to fortify the Order's position in Malta and bind the Knights to the island. The foundation stone of Valletta was laid by the Grandmaster of the Order, Jean Parisot de la Valette on 28 March 1566. La Valette placed the first stone in Our Lady of Victories Church. In his book Dell'Istoria della Sacra Religione et Illustrissima Militia di San Giovanni Gierosolimitano (English: The History of the Sacred Religion and Illustrious Militia of St John of Jerusalem), written between 1594 and 1602, Giacomo Bosio writes that when the cornerstone of Valletta was placed, a group of Maltese elders said: Iegi zimen en fel wardia col sceber raba iesue uquie (Which in modern Maltese reads, Jiġi żmien li fil-Wardija [l-Għolja Sciberras] kull xiber raba' jiswa uqija, and in English, There will come a time when every piece of land on Sciberras Hill will be worth its weight in gold). Grand Master La Valette died on 21 August 1568 at age 74 and never saw the completion of his city. Originally interred in the church of Our Lady of the Victories, his remains now rest in St. John's Co-Cathedral among the tombs of other Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta. Francesco Laparelli was the city's principal designer and his plan departed from medieval Maltese architecture, which exhibited irregular winding streets and alleys. He designed the new city on a rectangular grid, and without any collacchio (an area restricted for important buildings). The streets were designed to be wide and straight, beginning centrally from the City Gate and ending at Fort Saint Elmo overlooking the Mediterranean; certain bastions were built 153 feet (47 m) tall. The Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar was responsible for a number of the buildings. After the Knights' departure and the brief French occupation, building projects in Valletta resumed under British rule. These projects included widening gates, demolishing and rebuilding structures, widening newer houses over the years, and installing civic projects. Nazi and Fascist air raids throughout World War II caused much destruction. The Royal Opera House, constructed at the city entrance in the 19th century, was one of the buildings lost to the raids. In 1980, the 24th Chess Olympiad took place in Valletta. Valletta has been designated European Capital of Culture for 2018. Valletta is the scene of the Maltese Carnival, held in February leading up to Lent. Carnival in Gozo is celebrated in Victoria and parishes in both islands hold their own festivities.

A walk through Valletta Malta City Of Culture 2018.
Valletta is the capital city of Malta and is the European City Of Culture for 2018. A fascinating historic city, Valletta is a unique place to visit and Malta's biggest tourist attraction.
We take a walk around the Old Town of Valletta and see why this fantastic city in Malta has been crowned the European Capital Of Culture for 2018
Valletta (/vəˈlɛtə/; Maltese pronunciation: [ˈvɐlɛ.tɐ]) is the capital city of Malta, colloquially known as Il-Belt (IPA: [ˈil.bɛlt]; lit. The City) in Maltese.
Geographically, it is located in the South Eastern Region, in the central-eastern portion of the main island of Malta having its western coast with access to the Marsamxett Harbour and its eastern coast in the Grand Harbour.
The historical city of Valletta has a population of 6,444 (as of March 2014), while the metropolitan area around it has a population of 393,938.
Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe and the second southernmost capital of the European Union after Nicosia.
The architecture of Valletta's streets and piazzas ranges from mid-16th century Baroque to Modernism.
The city of Valletta is Malta's principal cultural centre and has a unique collection of churches, palaces and museums and act as one of the city's main visitor attractions.
When Benjamin Disraeli, future British Prime Minister, visited the city in 1830, he described it as a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen, and remarked that Valletta equals in its noble architecture, if it does not excel, any capital in Europe, and in other letters called it comparable to Venice and Cádiz and full of palaces worthy of Palladio.
Valletta will be hosting the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018 with a partner Dutch city, Leeuwarden. The ECoC includes all the Maltese Islands, with an aim to spread its impact throughout the whole Maltese territory.
If you're visiting Malta this year we highly recommend a walk through the city of Valletta, the European Capital of Culture 2018

Best of MALTA - Valletta, Sliema, Gozo Island, Popeye Village | Мальта обзор
Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, and 333 km north of Libya. Malta is one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries, at over 316 km2 with a population of about 475,000. Its capital is Valletta, which is the smallest national capital in the European Union by area at 0.8 km.2 Its largest town is Birkirkara, while its chief economic centre is Sliema. The official languages are Maltese and English, with Maltese also recognised as the national language. Maltese is the only Semitic language to be officially recognised in the European Union. Italian is also spoken by most of the population.
Malta has been inhabited since approximately 5900 BC. Its location in the centre of the Mediterranean has historically given it great strategic importance as a naval base, with a succession of powers having contested and ruled the islands, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and British. Most of these foreign influences have left some sort of mark on the country's ancient culture.
Malta became a British colony in 1815, serving as a critical way station for ships and the headquarters for the British Mediterranean Fleet. It played an important role in the Allied war effort during the Second World War, and was subsequently awarded the George Cross for its bravery in the face of an Axis siege, and the George Cross appears on Malta's national flag. The British Parliament passed the Malta Independence Act in 1964, giving Malta independence from the United Kingdom as the State of Malta, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and queen. The country became a republic in 1974. It has been a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations since independence, and joined the European Union in 2004; it became part of the eurozone monetary union in 2008.
Malta has a long Christian legacy and its Archdiocese is claimed to be an apostolic see because Paul the Apostle was shipwrecked on Melita, according to Acts of the Apostles, which is now widely taken to be Malta. Catholicism is the official religion in Malta. Article 40 of the Constitution states that all persons in Malta shall have full freedom of conscience and enjoy the free exercise of their respective mode of religious worship.
Malta is a popular tourist destination with its warm climate, numerous recreational areas, and architectural and historical monuments, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni, Valletta, and seven megalithic temples which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.

Valletta, Capital city ~ MALTA
The Maltese Islands
Malta, St. John's Co-Cathedral (Valletta) In All Its Glory!
One of the most visited Malta attractions is St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. This impressive rich cathedral was built by the Knights of St John between 1573 and 1578.
It was commissioned by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere.
In the old days, the cathedral used to be the most important church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John, also known as the Knights of Malta.
It is believed that at one point, the cathedral served as a showcase to prove that the Catholic church was still strong and powerful. This was mainly during those times when the Catholic faith was being persecuted and in the eyes of the common people worldwide, the church was starting to get a bit too weak and disorientated.
To this regard, the Knights of Malta took it upon themselves to create a massive cathedral wherein all sorts of riches were put on display for all to see - signifiying the church's power and prosperity.
Each Grandmaster in fact, added even more statues, coats of arms and countless silver and gold decorations than the Grandmaster that reigned before him!
Designed by the famous Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar, it's mostly the cathedral's interior which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The interior of the cathedral was mostly decorated by Mattia Preti, an Italian artist and knight. Mattia Preti offered to paint the cathedral's ceilings for free. Although he did ask that he be given something in return. He in fact asked that he be made a knight. And so following his extensive work in the cathedral, Mattia Preti was made a knight.
Originally the ceiling was painted dark blue with stars as was customary during those times. In fact, the Vatican's Sistine Chapel was painted in this way too, before Michelangelo painted it!
St. John's Co-Cathedral has 8 chapels. In one of the chapels, namely the one dedicated to St. George, you can see an impressive painting made by Mattia Preti. This painting is considered to be one of his masterpieces.
Another highlight of the church, is the collection of marble tombstones in the nave. There are more than 300 tombstones in the cathedral! It was here that important knights used to be buried. Richly decorated, each tombstone has images and stories relating to the knight's life.
Although today you can see countless decorations and riches in the cathedral, during Napoleon's short stay in Malta, he ransacked and stole practically everything that he could lay his hands on in the cathedral! So most of the decorations that you see now, have been created and added again after Napoleon left the Maltese Islands!
During World War II, the cathedral escaped unscathed, except for that one incident, when a bomb struck near the entrance. It is said that the bomb blast was so strong, that the front door ended up on the cathedral's central altar!
St John`s Co-Cathedral is a unique monument of international importance and is a gem of Baroque art. Its rich historic and artistic heritage is due to the fact that it was the convential church of the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. Over the years, the Grand Masters and Knights donated gifts of high artistic value and made enormous contributions to enrich it with only the best works of art by the leading artists available to them.
One of the main attractions at St John`s is the splendid inlaid marble floor consisting of a collection of tombstones making the floor a unique treasure. A visit to the Oratory is a must. Its main attractions include two important works by the world renowned artist Caravaggio.
The museum is a treasure house in itself. It holds vast collections of sacred vestments in silk embroidered with gold and silver. It also holds a superb collection of Flemish tapestries, an important collection of illuminated choral books and other objets d`art.
Why charge visitors to visit a Church!
The Cathedral houses many beautiful works of art and a visit is truly a unique experience. This interest results in a high number of visitors but the delicate fabric of the church was not designed for so many. Maintenance costs are very high and so an entrance fee is charged to help towards conservation programmes. There is no charge for prayer - Please inform staff at the main entrance of your intention and you will be guided to the designated chapel.
