Drive Through El Malpais National Monument
Moving from Chicago, IL area to Tucson, Az area! During our drive we took a northern route and went through parts of New Mexico and Azionia that we have never been. We happened upon the El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico! The scenery there was breathe taking and here was an attempt to capture that. Some of the photos I took from my phone when we stopped are at the end of video! For sure a place I'd like to go back!

El Malpais NCA
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the El Malpais National Conservation Area was established in 1987 and includes two wilderness areas — West Malpais and Cebolla — covering almost 100,000 acres.
El Malpais translates to the badlands in Spanish and is pronounced Mal-(rhymes with wall)-pie-ees. El Malpais NCA was established to protect nationally significant geological, archaeological, ecological, cultural, scenic, scientific, and wilderness resources surrounding the Grants Lava Flows.
In addition to the two wilderness areas, the NCA includes dramatic sandstone cliffs, canyons, La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway and the Narrows Picnic Area. There are many opportunities for photography, hiking, camping and wildlife viewing within this unique NCA.
El Malpais National Monument (New Mexico)
El Malpais means the badlands but this volcanic area holds many surprises. Lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tubes dominate the landscape. A closer look reveals high desert environments where animals and plants thrive. Prehistoric ruins, ancient cairns, rock structures, and homesteads remind us of past times.

140 million years old sand dunes of the type of Sahara nowadays compacted, shifted around and eroded. Who would have thought that dinosaurs used to roam that place?!
